Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
What's the point of such a big punishment if a third of it is spent in the off season - or is it a total ban away from training and everything?

All football related activities, so he can't even train with/at the club I think.distortiondave wrote: ↑Wed May 17, 2023 5:09 pmWhat's the point of such a big punishment if a third of it is spent in the off season - or is it a total ban away from training and everything?
If he can't train with the club until mid January, then he's going to take a while to get match fit etc

Its a short career, and eight month ban is pretty severe in that context

Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
They treat him like a French goose for 8 months. Force feed him high calorie diet and cage him so that he can not move.distortiondave wrote: ↑Wed May 17, 2023 5:09 pmWhat's the point of such a big punishment if a third of it is spent in the off season - or is it a total ban away from training and everything?
then they release him in January once he has cleaned the cage and returned it in good working order.

Don’t think it’s a coincidence that they’ve waited until the point when Brentford’s season boils down to whether they finish 9th or 10th and have the 3-month off season ahead.distortiondave wrote: ↑Wed May 17, 2023 5:09 pmWhat's the point of such a big punishment if a third of it is spent in the off season - or is it a total ban away from training and everything?

Are you saying he can train with the club for the last 4mths?
I haven't seen that mentioned in the FA's statement

Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
So he gets 4 months off, 4 months to get fit, then four months of the season to end up in the England Squad for the summer.
It's not a bad life, is it?

Yes, but missing a pre-season and the first six months of the season is still bigclaretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Wed May 17, 2023 5:14 pmHis first 3 months of this ban he misses 2 games.
You'd expect it to have an effect on Brentford summer transfer plans as well
Good news for us though, as Brentford will miss him a lot

Put money on it now: his first game back will be a home game against ....... Burnley.
Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
Not really 8 months is it. More like 5 months but it’s still a fit chunk of the season.
Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
Should have been a minimum of 1 year at least.

so part of his ban is during summer when he's not playing anyway ?
Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
Barton was banned for 18 months. Did he do more or less than Toney? Sorry haven’t read the details.

Always seem a bit contradictory these bans for gambling. Some very harsh punishments while the game is absolutely swimming in money from that industry.

Nominative determinism.

Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
Barton put a number of bets on his own team (sometimes to lose) which, understandably, is seen as worse.
Edit: Although it seems that Toney did bet on himself too.

Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
I’ve just read a few old articles about Barton’s ban. The guardian said he’d placed “at least 5” bets on games he played in. Toney seems to have placed a lot more than that on games he had a direct influence over.
I think it was the volume and time period they came over that did for Barton. It was over a thousand bets over 12 years.

Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
Barton bet on his team to lose in games he was on the bench for, didn't he?
The worst of Toney's offences are betting on Wigan to lose when he was on loan there, but in games he wasn't playing in. That's two of the 262 charges I think. The rest frankly should just be legal. It's very silly to do it when it's against the rules but if gambling is going to be such a big part of the sport I don't see why players should be excluded from it.

He’s been diagnosed with a gambling addiction and had 13 bets on his team to lose.

Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
He bet on himself to score on a number of occasions
What's to say he didn't have a word with the opposing GK?
There's no proof, but it's not a huge leap to think it could happen.
Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
Reduced from 11 months to 8 because an expert said he has a gambling addiction. As others have said he'll be back in January and can help Brentford for the second half of the season, because they got an expert to say he has an addiction. What's the betting (!) he scores summer vital goals and has enough time to prepare and get into the England squad. Hard not to be cynical.
Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
I mean that does seem a bit of a leap given the wages that professional footballers are on.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 2:08 pmHe bet on himself to score on a number of occasions

More of an issue in that he is there to influence it though. Choose to shoot rather than pass at some point.
Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
Barton, from memory, placed just 1 single bet on Newcastle to lose, on an away game in London. It was a £2 bet on a game where he had been left behind in Newcastle and was sulking.daveisaclaret wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 10:58 amBarton bet on his team to lose in games he was on the bench for, didn't he?

He had three bets, again from memory, on games that he was playing in, but all were to win.
Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
I wonder what the medical distinction is between someone who has a gambling addiction, and someone who can't stop gambling? And why does it make a difference? Alcoholics don't get a lesser punishment for drunk driving!Jellybean wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 2:20 pmReduced from 11 months to 8 because an expert said he has a gambling addiction. Were all his bets trivial £2 and £5 stuff like Barton?

Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
Le Tissier put the ball out for a throw in, yet he was on good money at the time.
The leap isn't that big and when they're hooked on gambling they'll do whatever
Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
I don't disagree with that part, I meant what is in it for the opposition keeper to go along with him.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 2:39 pmLe Tissier put the ball out for a throw in, yet he was on good money at the time.

Brentford never turned up for that match.

Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
Le Tissier did his for a bit of fun in a time when gambling wasn't seen as the be-all and end-all of football. "First throw-in" then was seen (as it should be) as a joke bet. Le Tissier's bet would be seen as a far worse offence today.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 2:39 pmLe Tissier put the ball out for a throw in, yet he was on good money at the time.

Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
Never understood why Le Tissier was never banned from football related activities as he admitted he cheated. Even though he'd retired he should have been barred from coaching and any managerial roles for a period of time should he have chosen to go down that route.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 2:39 pmLe Tissier put the ball out for a throw in, yet he was on good money at the time.

Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
Clearly Toney has a very serious problem
Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
His ban is like that of a motorist who kills or maims due to dangerous driving, and the driving ban starts whilst offender is in prison, surely he should be banned for 8 playing months. Annoying isn't it, he bets to score so trust harder when he doesn't bet on himself as an earlier poster alluded to ie and perhaps Leeds at home last game of last season he doesn't really give a sh1t about the integrity of the league. In fact ban him for 10 years, a proper deterrent is needed or every game could be open to suspicion.
Re: Ivan Toney - Eight Month Ban
Aye, but he’s fine to carry on gambling as long as it’s not on football.
His other serious problem is stupidity. Stupid for doing it and stupid for getting caught.
Was he betting using his own account, in his own name? It’s surely pretty easy for a footballer to use a mates account for his betting, if he so wishes. No one would be any the wiser, unless their mate shops them.
