Oxelade-Chamberlain?

Post by willsclarets » Thu May 18, 2023 7:56 am

Released by liverpool. Still only 29 and can play across midfield. Loads of experience and quality. Pace and goals too. Out of our budget, or realistic target? And would people want him at all? All hypotheticals of course!

I’d take him just to get his missus on the turf!

Think he’d add great experience, can’t see it though as imagine he’ll be looking to go to a London club.

Top class player when fit. If we could get him and our medical team can get him right like they did with JBG last year then it's an absolute no brainer if the wage demands aren't too silly.

A pay as you play contract is probably the best we could offer.

Won't cost us much !!

A lot being made of JBG fitness last season.

Be interesting to see if he can maintain that in the Prem. I felt the level helped him last year.

Good player when fit - but we can’t afford to have a player with his injury record…..especially with the intensity and pressing game we play.
Even when he’s fit just look at the long list of players Klopp has recently picked before him including the likes of Elliot and Milner at both ends of the age spectrum !

The pay as you play deal is often mooted as an option on here when discussing players.

Any agent worth their salt would never allow a player to sign a pay as you play deal, no matter what their injury record was.

I'd love to actually see an example of a Premier League club signing ANY player on a pay as you play deal.

No way. If you could guarantee his fitness maybe, but if he could guarantee his fitness, he'd probably be looking elsewhere.

Does such a contract exist? I know players there can be bonuses in contracts for appearances but I can’t imagine there are such as pay as you play contracts.

For a Liverpool team who for 2 of the past 3 years have been playing incredible football with a reasonably settled first 11.

How many games has Hebden in the squad for? That may give a more realistic view of his fitness maybe?

Also you can't guarantee any player's fitness we almost signed O'Hare and he has barely played this season has he?

No chance we've had too many crocks in the past
Also when players leave Liverpool they are often burned out.

I'm unsure what makes people think that a player who has ongoing injury problems which has seriously limited his game time will magically heal if he comes to us.

He's probably a very nice chap etc etc, will be 30 in August and we will just be managing his injuries. Liverpool had serious issues in midfield and yet he was only available infrequently and then was injured again. I suspect these are ongoing injuries which need to be managed, rather than a series of one-offs. They will only occur more frequently as he ages.

Sad story of many a pro but this feels like a reheated Wilshire conversation from a few seasons ago. We play a very structured way so we need players who can play a sequence of games to becomed tuned into it.

I can't imagine for a moment that Vincent hasn't considered him as with many other upcoming free agents. Perhaps he will consider him. One thing I know is that Vincent is very sharp on transfers, whatever his decision is I trust (and will happily change mine).

We've wasted far too much money in recent seasons on "cheap big name" signings like this.

It'd be like finding a Ferrari for £30k in Autotrader - it's only ever gonna end in tears.

Dyche used to love them signings, didn't he.

I think Owen was signed on a "pay as you play" deal for Stoke and I think Jack Wilshere did for someone too but you definitely don't hear of many of them.

Owen Hargreaves was offered a pay as you play contract.

I don't think Wilshere ever was.

Even Darren "Sicknote" Anderton never had to take a pay as you play deal.

I reckon their might be a low paying contract with bonuses for being declared fit for selection.

Looking generally like a no! To be honest I would tend to agree it's too much of a risk, especially for someone likely to be the top earner in the club. There is a bit of me that would be excited by a signing like this, but it doesn't seem to fit the model. We do need some experience though, I just wonder what kind of player vinny will go for in that regard. You can go for the Milner's of this world or the Ox; a big risk or big age. On balance I can see why people would prefer a Milner, but while the Ox esque option is higher risk it's also higher reward.

Absolutely not, with his injury record.

I’d be going all out to get Dele Alli though.

I think that injuries blight a career, but once fit, and let’s remember that professional athletes are super fit, they need competitive games to maintain that fitness. He never got that at Liverpool.

I’d take him, I’d pay him.
