Film "Bad Day At Black Rock" (1955)
Watched this last night for the first time. All-time classic. Will be considered very tame by today's standards but a simple story well told.
Fantastic cast with Spencer Tracy, Robert Ryan, Ernest Borgnine, Lee Marvin and Walter Brennan.
Superb colour cinematography. Just love films showing tiny US towns in the middle of the desert.

Watched "The Outlaw Josey Wales" in a little barn cinema in the town in Utah where it was actually filmed - tremendousecc wrote: ↑Mon May 22, 2023 4:16 pmWatched this last night for the first time. All-time classic. Will be considered very tame by today's standards but a simple story well told.

1955 a good year for Ernest Borgnine - Won Oscar best Actor for title character in "Marty".

Re: Film "Bad Day At Black Rock" (1955)
Try "Night of the Hunter" from 1955 - Charles Laughton's only film as a director and universally panned at the time.
Robert Mitchum in possibly his finest role.

That's when films were made with the best actors, not the best looking actors.

I highly recommend Pickup on South Street (Samuel Fuller, 1953) hard hitting 'B' movie with Richard Widmark
Re: Film "Bad Day At Black Rock" (1955)
The original 1957 "3.10 to Yuma" with Van Heflin and Glenn Ford a cracker too ... far superior to the Russell Crowe remake

A personal favourite of mine as a youngster was “the wicked lady” from 1945 with the wonderful Margaret Lockwood. If I remember right, James Mason was also in it.

Some top films mentioned there.
Violent Saturday, also with Lee Marvin, is good as is Edge of Eternity (Don Siegel).

One of my all time favourite films from this era is Twelve Angry Men , made in 1957. Henry Fonda as the morally upright and decent man in the white suit who gradually persuades his fellow jurors and turns a 11-1 "Guilty" verdict into a "Not Guilty". It''s absolutely superb.

I just saw an unassuming little film on Talking Pictures TV called 'Tomorrow':

Ha …. In fairness I think most people know the premise of the film and, if not, it’s pretty clear early on what the idea is. I mean everyone who went to watch Titanic knew the boat would sink.

Re: Film "Bad Day At Black Rock" (1955)
A Night to Remember (a much more factual retelling although with unrealistic iceberg model ship being sunk scenario) was interestingly enough a film released in 1958 (Kenneth More, Honor Blackman, David McCallum)Stalbansclaret wrote: ↑Mon May 22, 2023 8:02 pmHa …. I'm not going to bother with "The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford" either.
