Are we a bigger club than Coventry ?
Found myself in a debate recently in Majorca with a bunch of Coventry fans, they thought they was much bigger than us and give the usual ‘Burnley’s a shithole’
I think we are bigger and it’s not even close.

Re: Are we a bigger club than Coventry ?
They probably should be ‘bigger’, it’s a City of some 300,000 plus.
Probably not the fairest measure to look at average attendances considering how we have both fared over the last ten plus years. Both in the top flight and I think they’d average a good few more than us, certainly at first.
Barring their eighties FA Cup win and an admirably long stint in the top flight, their history is pretty mediocre, to be polite.
We’re probably fairly similar in terms of size - their ceiling may be higher being a city club but history would suggest otherwise.
We punch well above our weight on a lot of fronts.

Yes.
As poxy as Coventry is, it isn't the dreaded south. We've got that going for us in the midlands.
Re: Are we a bigger club than Coventry ?
Not bothered who is the bigger, I just want Luton to smash them tomorrow!!
Re: Are we a bigger club than Coventry ?
Coventry would have been bigger then us and perhaps a few more clubs but the good old Luftwaffe putting them well and truly in their place.

Re: Are we a bigger club than Coventry ?
Its generally accepted in English football that how big a club you are should be judged on how many major trophy's you have won in the last decade.
For clubs who haven't won anything in the last 10 years then the bigger club is deemed the one who most recently won a major trophy.
Major trophy's for the purpose of this consists of the Premier League (or old 1st Division), FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League / European Cup and the Europa League / UEFA Cup / UEFA Cup Winners Cup
As Coventry won the FA Cup in 1987 then they should undoubtedly be considered the bigger of the two clubs

Re: Are we a bigger club than Coventry ?
I don’t buy into this whole we’re bigger, you’re bigger malarkey. Ultimately, it’s about where the club has been in recent years, where it’s going next and then I think it’s down to potential along with the state of the business. Any ‘success’ that a club had 80 years ago doesn’t mean anything in my book when it comes to who’s ‘bigger’.
As things stand, on all those fronts listed above we are a long way ahead of Coventry, who I believe are not exactly financially secure and aren’t in the premier league yet. Could they overtake us in the long term? Yes, but I don’t see much reason to think this will happen anytime soon in my opinion.

I’m pleased that Coventry seem to be on the up. Their fans have been through the mill. Coventry is bigger than Burnley without a doubt, but we have a better football club.

Jeez man, you just claimed that a city being bombed resulting in hundreds of innocent people losing their lives was putting Coventry well and truly in their place. Pretty tasteless, but yeah I’d find an argument in an empty room.

I love that video that was doing the rounds, filmed from the away end…
“F*** off Burnley! F*** off Burnley! F***off Burnley!”
A hush ensues before three and a half sides of Turf Moor erupt as Burnley score the only goal of the game.
“I f***ing hate Burnley…”
Brilliant.

I quite like cov. Fans I’ve met have all been sound and have that sense of humour you developed through a few years of utter shite football.
They have suffered for a long time with that white elephant stadium. I only ever went to high field road once in the cup defeat years ago and it was an excellent stadium. Such a shame

I studied in Cov for 3 years at the “Lanch “
Local delicacy at the chippy was was Faggots and peas.
Ever heard the phrase “Being sent to Coventry “
At the time I was there, they were in the top flight and I used to go their home games regularly. We were in the second tier , 76-78
Crap crowd, and I always wanted them to get beat.Still do.COME ON LUTON

It’s all down to timing. When I was growing up Cov were a much bigger club than us. In the 50’s -60’s and for the last 15 years or so we are the bigger club

Isn’t our whole thing being a successful small club? Being a ‘big’ club is something for fans of failing teams to fall back on.

I well remember the images put out. I don’t remember much in the way of substance to suggest it was anywhere near close, after that.
Perhaps it was the bread bin that housed Def Leppard.
Re: Are we a bigger club than Coventry ?
Nah, winning two English football league titles in the last decade trumps that for me.... I didn't even realise there was such a thing as a '1987', that might as well be last century!Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 7:15 pmIts generally accepted in English football that how big a club you are should be judged on how many major trophy's you have won in the last decade.

Re: Are we a bigger club than Coventry ?
The 'we're bigger than you' debate is the most done and pointless debate going.
The only clubs that entertain this are the clubs that have won very little yet feel they should have done.
You're big when you win things. Hence, Burnley don't need to be involved in this.
