The £170 million game
How do they get this figure on the Championship play-off final winner? They’re mere runners up to the runners up, so what’s the title winners themselves earn for going into the Premier League? BTW a quick Google reveals the play-off final was being dubbed the £170 million game four years ago. What with all this inflation we’ve got???
Re: The £170 million game
The £170 million is how much bottom place in the PL will get next year, I think. So it's at least £170 million for us, Sheff Utd and whoever wins tomorrow.longsidetrumpet wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 10:39 pmHow do they get this figure on the Championship play-off final winner? I don’t usually knock journalism, being one myself, but it strikes me as lazy journalism. Just been a piece on the final on News at Ten, and the term never explained

Re: The £170 million game
Not quite, it's what you are likely to get should you go straight back down so that figure includes the parachute payment. Shows how things have changed, it was a £60m game when we won the play off in 2009. I think we got around £30 million plus the rest over the parachute payments afterwards.

Re: The £170 million game
Do we get any money up front? I was thinking from a cash flow perspective and for our transfer costs to be competitive in the EPL

and a shiny trophy with a parade through town !
Re: The £170 million game
According this https://interestingfootball.com/how-the ... ney-works/
“Prize money
The prize money on offer in the Championship is comparatively little, with the winner expected to pick up around £100,000, and the second placed £50,000
Thereafter, prize money drops in increments, with the side finishing bottom of the EFL Championship (Barnsley last season) earning around £7,000 in prize money.”
Re: The £170 million game
£290m if you stay up for one season.
Re: The £170 million game
I did read somewhere that the winners, by convention not as a rule, give their share of the gate money to the losers. Doubt if it makes them feel much better

All of those untold riches on offer and only this year has VAR been introduced for the Championship Play Off Final
VAR also for Lg 1 and Lg 2 Finals

Still a ridiculous situation that the team that fails to get promoted automatically gets far more publicity that those sides who tend to be much better.
Was even more ridiculous in the days when the team that won the play offs got a trophy whilst the team in second didn't.

Re: The £170 million game
Perhaps Sky like to hype up the Championship Final and the millions of ££££££’s at stake because they are screening it.
And it’s LIVE

Re: The £170 million game
Of course what the statement fails to capture is that costs go up massively, mainly in wages and transfer fees, so profits increase only a fraction

In Luton's case, it means spending c £10m, to update the Ground, whilst they're hoping to break ground on a brand new stadium by the end of this year ...BillyIngham'sShorts wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 9:22 pmOf course what the statement fails to capture is that costs go up massively, mainly in wages and transfer fees, so profits increase only a fraction
