Can’t imagine a top class keeper wouldn’t have taken that to be fair. If he’s good enough to play as a batsman then play him but he’s not a test wicket keeper.
He is a top batsman in my opinion and should be in the side for that alone. As for keeping wicket, he isn’t England’s best wicket keeper by a long chalk and ultimately this could have a huge bearing on whether or not we win this series. Against this top batting line up it is essential to take the catches.

Bairstow is an interesting one. Where do you play him if your not playing him as a keeper

It’s tough

Root has to play four, can’t push him up the order

So it’s which two would you prefer out of - Pope, Brook & Bairstow

My biggest issue with dropping pope is I am just not sure Bairstow is good enough for a 3.

In the ashes I tend to think Bairstow has to start as the keeper just to give us an extra batter.

It just takes a different temperament batting at 3 - you’re basically an opener

He could bat 5 no problem to get after the bowlers when the ball is older and the bowlers have toiled a bit…

Thing is - quite rightly as well, what he contributes with the bat you more than lose with the difference in keeping wicket.

We have enough data on this - we could have had the Aussies potentially skittled by now if he’d have taken that stumping before Head got going.

Also historically he averages only 5 more than Foakes with the bat…

I think the point being overlooked is that having that secondary role as a keeper can actually remove pressure that's on him as a batsman..and obviously vice versa.

To be walking out as purely a 3 or a 5 in an ashes series, without that safety net could be too big an ask for him (or you could argue that it's exactly what's needed)

Stokes drops a catch, albeit he did very well to get near it and stop it going through the field for 4.

And when he’s making mistakes as a wicket keeper the pressure will be on him to contribute with the bat….it’s like an all rounder if you’re not taking wickets you’ve got to score runs and vice versa

There’s pressure on no matter what your role is, in an Ashes series

Who ever contemplated that Bairstow would be good enough to keep wicket in an Ashes series in the first place?

Where he played last summer and showed his best ever form. Not sure why anyone is trying to overcomplicate this.

Sadly, I think we’ve really played into the Aussies hands here.

Ball was doing nothing yesterday and we didn’t have a true quick to cause problems when it was dead - ended up flogging Moeen and now he’s nackered…. The extra chances that we did have, have been lost because we have a sub par keeper, keeping wicket

Totally agree with the post above regarding a below par wicket keeper. Two straight forward chances in the afternoon missed. Can't afford that against the best in the world.
Unaware that he missed another one this morning. Oops!

Not that people are ‘arguing’

There will be barely any cricket this afternoon due to weather, tomorrow should be good all day then limited cricket on Tuesday due to rain, draw very likely.
