Re: charlton v burnley 1971-72
One player I remember from that Charlton game - Dick Plumb. I thought we’d reached an all time low being done by a player with that name.
Re: charlton v burnley 1971-72
Two goalkeepers, no gloves. Shows how much the ball has changed - you couldn't catch a football without gloves nowadays.
And another change - the Charlton goalkeeper was described as "a big man, 6 foot 1 of him".

Certainly a mixed performance from Peter Mellor! Charlton played some good stuff there but ended up getting relegated.

Thanks for that. I'd forgotten about these games.

A couple of good saves but awful on crosses. He was never the same after his shoulder injuryClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Jun 29, 2023 2:53 pmThose highlights showed just how poor a goalkeeper Mellor was

Re: charlton v burnley 1971-72
Colin Waldron was caught in possession in the penalty area. All players make mistakes. Mellor was really good at first. From the 6th tier of English football to the top division. That doesn't often happen.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Jun 29, 2023 3:44 pmHe wasn’t that good before it and one hell of a lot worse after it. His judgement, or lack of it, was evident a number of times in that Charlton footage.
Re: charlton v burnley 1971-72
I remember him having a great game on the Turf against Man City, but also a shocking performance in an FA Cup tie against Huddersfield. Had a decent career though with over 400 league appearances and an FA Cup Final to boot - in which he certainly didn't cover himself in glory though.
Re: charlton v burnley 1971-72
To be fair to Mellor, two of the three crosses he came for and missed were to players who were completely unmarked. His defence wasn't supporting him.
I remember on the 1975 FA Cup all-day TV preview, they had a chat with a group of Fulham players (including Mellor) and were laughing about his habit of dropping the ball. They gave him a tube of Bostik to help out. Sadly, it didn't work.

That he was. I watched that in London on TV. Went down for a party of a mate who was at NELP. Great weekend.

Re: charlton v burnley 1971-72
But for poor finishing we could have lost that about 8-0.

Goalkeepers often don't come out very well from edited highlights of games, but I did wonder how we got Mellor in the first place. He came from Witton Albion (have just looked this up) who were in something like the Cheshire League. Was there a personal connection?

Re: charlton v burnley 1971-72
I think he just came on trial but then we sacked Harry Thomson so signed him. He had a half decent first season but then got an injury and he was poor after that.sandy richardson wrote: ↑Thu Jun 29, 2023 6:58 pmGoalkeepers often don't come out very well from edited highlights of games, but I did wonder how we got Mellor in the first place. Re: charlton v burnley 1971-72
They were in the division below the Northern Premier League, which was tier 5. Staggering to think of that jump. I know he went off, but he was pretty decent for a while. Nice bloke, too.sandy richardson wrote: ↑Thu Jun 29, 2023 6:58 pmGoalkeepers often don't come out very well from edited highlights of games, but I did wonder how we got Mellor in the first place. I’m sure I heard a rendition of ‘the Clarets went to Ewood and won the f***ing league’ during the Millwall game……..

Re: charlton v burnley 1971-72
Watched the highlights, a trip down memory lane for me. I was living in Essex and went to the game on my own. I was 16 at the time and remember standing on a side terrace high up from the pitch. I also remember the terrible song they played when the home team came out, “ when the red red robins came bob bob bobbin ….:”

Re: charlton v burnley 1971-72
Maybe I should be posting this on the sporting achievements thread , I scored a penalty against Peter aged 11 up the Fenny in Padiham , fair play to him spending time with the kids and signing autographs and having penalties scored against him though.

After agree fully, i always so a mistake in him either flapping at crosses or letting goals in .ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Jun 29, 2023 3:44 pmHe wasn’t that good before it and one hell of a lot worse after it. His judgement, or lack of it, was evident a number of times in that Charlton footage.

Re: charlton v burnley 1971-72
Terry Cochrane’s finish was similar to the one he scored at Ewood Park?
