How many more of these incidents need to happen before the government wake up and ban guns….oh no they can’t, it’s in the constitution…I reserve the right to bear arms and kill people…..

It's an amendment to the constitution

Seems like an obvious solution to me

It's the society they want to live in though
They want easy access to guns and all that it entails

We all know the 2A is out of date and has been bastardised

Pretty mild by US standards if true-30 injured 3 critically and two dead
Don’t think they will ever deal with these problems
Wasn’t a response from Trump to stop school massacres to get teachers armed?
Think there are more guns in the US civilians hands than there are civilians

Saw a clip of a teacher showing a new feature in her classroom. In the corner, amongst books and crayons, was a lever she could pull which released concertinaed metal walls. This created a room within a room where she could usher in her pretty much baby students and hope for the best if/when some lunatic picks their school.

Then there's the bulletproof rucksacks etc.

The NRA’s dominance is as assured as the pill pushers. Any President brave enough to try to ban guns had better save it until their second term.

The sad state of affairs in the USA. More will care less about the number of deaths than their right to own a gun.

It's some city. Had a night there once to watch the Orioles play the Yankees. Walked from the waterfront area to Camden Yard. Not a pretty walk TBH. Next day we were going up to JFK and the sat nav took us right through some really deprived areas. Burnt out cars. Deserted tenement blocks and shady looking individuals on each block. Not a nice place at all.

Baltimore is/was the murder capital of the US, when I lived near there early 2000s.
I do vividly recall a early hrs encounter at the greyhound station (sketchy), between 2 groups weilding guns.
Was relieved when the dog turned up.

Civil war would ensue .......its the machine gun type weapons that should be banned, Bill Clinton did it once & mass shootings went way down.

The way it works now, someone loses their rag at work eg... heads down to a sports goods store or even Walmart, buys a machine gun & starts killing. There's absolutely no reason anyone needs one of these weapons.

Feel terrible saying this but I really don’t feel sorry for them any more. As long as the gun lobby and the American Rifle Association have the power they have nothing will change. It seems in this world you get what you deserve.

I’m sure that’s of great solace to the victims and their families, especially those school shootings.

Or we recognise that we can actually separate the deeply messed up relationship the country has with fire arms, from the victims of these atrocities.

Apologies for the seemingly unsympathetic nature of my post because obviously people have lost loved ones, but the power is there to change things if there was the will. But as long as Trump and his like and their lunatic supporters hold sway then nothing will be done. Whenever a president or government has even raised the issue of gun controls the whole world hears the cry of 'no' from the great American public. They have two problems. One is it is written into the constitution and although it can be changed it is very difficult for it to be done, it requires a whole process including votes etc. The American constitution is not easily (and indeed very rarely) changed. The other problem is the unbelievable power of the American Rifle Association and the gun lobby in general. Given also that firearms production is presumably a very major industry in the US (this is an assumption but one would assume it to be the case) there is also pressure from that industry to oppose gun controls. I am not a gambling man but I am willing to bet this issue will still be being discussed in 50 years time and still there will be no controls and people will still be being massacred and families will still be mourning loved ones. It's a system that cannot seemingly be changed unless there is a serious and fundamental change in the American mindset generally and a breaking of the gun lobby grip in particular, neither of which looks even remotely likely any time soon.

You can see the exact same hypocrisy as above when the American right talk about their pro-life stance where they will do anything they can to force a pregnant person to have a baby but then don't give a flying f*ck around supporting that childs life once it is born

When Steve Earle released the song 'Devil's Right Hand' he was asked if it was an anti gun song, he just said 'It's way too late for gun control in the USA'.

Sorry if I came across as sanctimonious. You’re absolutely right, the country is gripped and paralysed by the fact it has a massive part of it that is frankly demented, but that’s not to say they are representative of everyone. My brother lives in the States (Mike Pence town no less) and he, his wife and their friends are as far from these lunatics as you could find, and it’s they that I think of when I see comments that (deliberately or not) sweep up everyone into one mass.

It’s interesting. I wonder how big a part the constitution and its concept plays in this, and how now, 250ish years on it breaks rather than makes the country. I’ve just finished re listening to a series of podcasts on the American civil war and it talks about how the seeds of that conflict were sown in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, and how those conflicts still play out with such damage now. And gun control is absolutely caught up in that mentality. I’m not talking about the amendment itself but the way the constitution itself almost sanctifies things beyond rational discussion. Right now you just can’t see a way that America can do that. After they sat on their hands after Sandy Hook you knew which way it would go, and you’re absolutely bang on as to those reasons.

I've got an American on twitter asking me if I want a new 4th Reich because I support gun control and so did the Nazis, afterall look at what they did after taking the guns away from people...

That's the mindset of these idiots, they've been indoctrinated into thinking they must have guns, that guns will solve everything.

He also claimed the Nazis were left wing to give further indication of his ignorance/stupidity

That person is obviously insane and / or a troll.

The reason America finds itself in such a state isn’t people like that, it’s that there are enough people who are outwardly rational that think having a gun is a God given right. Often emphasis on the ‘God’.

The mouth frothers may get the attention, but it needs more than them to retain the status quo.

Personally, I’d agree.

But I’d also say it fundamentally misses one of the things that makes the states so different from us, and denying it as a factor probably wouldn’t advance anything.

Oh I'm aware they use god as justification, because they've been brainwashed and it would require a monumental shift in mentality to see any real change

But these are not gangland shootings are they?

They are people going into schools and crowded public areas and opening fire on anyone that moves.

How would you stop that when it has absolutely nothing to do with drug dealers?
