Crawley
Duckett
Brooke’s
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Ali
Woakes
Wood
Robinson
Broad

Interesting line up. Batting looks pretty weak
That will not be the batting lineup I imagine robinson will be 11 with wood at 10 and Broad at 9 but let’s see what happens. Anyway with Woakes at 8 it is already a much stronger batting line up although Brooke’s at first wicket is untried and we have no idea what will happen.

Jimmy hasn't looked particularly happy so far - wonder if the Old Trafford test will be his final one ?

The batting is far stronger than previous tests, Broad at 11 is evidence. They just have to produce.
I would argue it’s the weakest in years.

Only five dedicated batsmen. With 6 all rounders/bowlers

It gets a spinner in.

I reckon Woakes, Wood and Ali get more runs this test than Pope, Anderson and Tongue did last test.

I caught the last part of an interview with Stokes on the radio and he said Anderson was never going to play 5 matches and they want him fresh for Old Trafford . I think he'll bow out there time and injuries catch up with us all.

That's interesting because I think the Aussies have us exactly where they'd like us to be. Their resolve and resilience have proved greater than ours, demonstrated perfectly by their response in the last test when they lost Lyon. Anything can happen,of course but I still believe defeat in the first test hangs over us like an albatross. Should have come out on top in that one.

This is how pathetic the Aussies are getting down here. You can’t read the article now, surprise surprise it been deleted. It was going on about someone shouting at Ponting on the boundary at Lords. Ponting will now not be going to the 3rd test for security reasons. So for the protection of the Austrian commentators security guards will be employed at Headingley. Then right at the bottom of the article. “PONTING WILL BE AWAY ON A PREARRANGED HOLIDAY IN FRANCE”
Talk about starring the pot.

I’m optimistic because of:

- The short turn around, Aussie seam attack aren’t spring chickens like
- Nathan Lyon injury
- Our lineup, which, imo is much stronger and has a lot more batting depth

Bring ‘em on!

The 3 England bowlers we have brought in ain’t exactly spring chickens either - 33, 34 and 36 years old.
At least they should be fresh as it is a quick turnaround from last week….though that could be a big issue for Stokes and Broad too.
I wouldn’t be buying a ticket for Monday for this game - or possibly Sunday either !!

Despite all the angst about England throwing away their wickets etc. Looking at the first two games despite all that they lost the first game because they couldn’t get Cummins out who batted well above his average. In the second game they lost by 43 runs which may well have been attainable without the Bairstow stumping.

It’s not just their bowlers who are knocking on a bit it’s their batters too Khawaja, Smith and Warner are all mid thirties. Happen they will run out of steam at Headingley?

Perhaps the biggest downside of Bazball is that we haven’t kept them out in the field long enough to knacker them out.

I’m optimistic as well actually but as to your comment our line up being much stronger when you look at it pragmatically there is only Root and Stokes who would definitely get in the Aussie line up.

You could argue about 1 or 2 I agree but you could only make a case for the 2 I mentioned as definite which probably highlights the task we have in this series.

Turn it round.

You could only make a case for Lyon, Smith and Cummins as definites to get in our side.

Travis Head would be one of the first names on the team sheet under McCullum and Stokes.

Labuschagne gets in any team in the world, despite being horribly unlikeable.

I was thinking about this when I posted and then went for my sons school sports day so didn’t add it.

So with the current way England play I would have the following for definite:
Warner
Labushene
Smith
Carey (it would be Foakes but he isn’t selected)
Cummins
Lyon

Then we could argue over Head, Starc and Hazlewood

With root and Stokes the definite from England

The 1 unfortunate player would be khwaja with the runs he has scored but he just wouldn’t suit the way England play at all.

By the way I didn’t look at how the team would line up batting order, how many bowlers etc I was just looking at purely who is the best player for the way England play

Ps an in form Jimmy or Broady would be shoe ins as well, but neither are at the top of there game at the minute that said Broad has bowled pretty well just not quite at his top level YET!

Once again, England have won every toss thus far getting opportunity to bowl first on a green tinged wicket.
Can they take full advantage?

I don't think he's "horribly unlikeable" at all.

He's irritating with his batting style agreed, but any interviews I've seen he comes across as a pretty decent guy who just loves anything to do with cricket.

Result pitch, lively with fast outfield.

A lot will depend on how generous we are with the free gifts. If (big if) we bowl with control then we can be batting before lunch tomo.

If Wood gets it right he'll take wickets..another very big if though.
