Smith really is a disgrace. Suspect he would review it if he was bowled. Pity about the drops but England’s morning
He is entitled to review if he doesn’t think he hit it which clearly he didn’t.

Fielding has been a massive issue for us up to now too many dropped catches overall not just by Bairstow and the amount of extras we are conceding is crippling us as well. If Foakes isn’t the keeper after this game then either Johhny has improved beyond all recognition behind the stumps in the rest of the game or Foakes will just never get in, JB had to play as a batsman though so fitting them both in is a problem.

How well has Wood bowled? Wow shame about his fitnes he would have been a game changer in the last 2 tests.

Much better and varied bowling attack from England, putting Australia under pressure after being put into bat. Stokes needs to swallow his pride and drop his mate Bairstow for the next test, he is a liability and is costing us wickets. The wicket has a lot in it for the bowlers so we will have to bat well, not recklessly. All in all, a very positive morning for England though.

JB the batter has to play JB the keeper needs to be consigned to the break out in emergencies bin.

I’d bring in James Rew from Somerset before Foakes. I know he’s young but it can’t be long before they bring him into the England setup.

Stop blaming Bairstow , it's the selectors/coach/ Captain . Still bowling well this section.
You can tag Bairstow alongside Anderson.

Massively undercooked due to virtually no games leading up to the Ashes and it's showing in the match sharpness..

What is Bairstows batting average as a keeper? As a batter I agree he should play but as a keeper not for me and as a number 7 an average of 32 is very good.

Now that is an easy drop.

We have been awful in the field this series.

Hussain just said that’s 13 drops and a missed stumping so far in the series.

That’s an awful record.

He is allowed to review any dismissal. However any batter knows if they have edged the ball or not. Even the the Aussie lady commentator questioned his review. The good news for England is that he was correctly given out and Australia lost a review !

What's the point of having reviews if teams aren't allowed to use them whenever they want?

Surely it's their choice if they want to be daft and lose a review, as Smith would have done in his case.

Can’t quite believe how quick this outfield is - I haven’t seen anything like it, beat the infield and you’re more or less guaranteed a boundary (as long as there isn’t anyone out in the deep)

We have bowled really well but again we have been let down in the field 13 drop catches and 1 stumping and this partnership needs breaking soon.

Shame at least 1 of woakes, broad and Robinson are not in the 88-90 mph mould, at times all bowl in fantastic area's but just need that extra 3-5mph, and just as I say that marsh hits one for 6, seriously good batsman, need him gone.

Moeen into the attack.

I don’t really see it with Robinson - I know he’s had a good year but I don’t think he’s a top level bowler at all

The Root drop seems to have changed the game. How many more times will we shoot ourselves in the foot this series.

3 Test hundreds for Mitch Marsh - all against England.

Batting against Wood he looked to have so much time.

Was going to say the same, we get in to a great position this morning with hostile bowling and then take our foot off the gas almost as if we've won the game this morning, get wood and broad steaming back in to Travis head and get into the tail, quicker the innings is over more rest the bowlers have, just like Atherton said last test we're playing like it's just another game, it's the ashes for god sake, and there goes marsh we've got him so let's really turn the screw now and play like it's the ashes, here's our chance. Time for broad and wood.

It's a nice fast pitch with even bounce. Great batting conditions.
