Re: Opposite the Park View Chippy
I assume its not finished, but it doesn't look much like Pace from that angle.

Is that on the side of someone's house?

It can't be finished, the hair is the same colour as the house !eastcoastclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 05, 2023 7:05 pmI assume its not finished, but it doesn't look much like Pace from that angle.
Re: Opposite the Park View Chippy
I assume Sky commissioned it.
Re: Opposite the Park View Chippy
Bit of a crap mural if you ask me. Why paint the effing chimney when you only need to turn your head around to see it (more or less). Also, sticking a chairman's face (if that's supposed to be Pace) anywhere near a football club mural is absurd for just about any club save for when said chairman is/was some sort of uncontroversial, not-shady, more or less uncorrupted pure bona fide sugar daddy (i.e. Jack Walker) during some golden era, or an absolutely legendary custodian, and I don't think Pace fits that bill quite yet.

It’s an advert for the documentary isn’t it?Spiral wrote: ↑Wed Jul 05, 2023 7:18 pmBit of a crap mural if you ask me. Ok, but not as good as the Dyche one that was on that gable end.
Is that still visible?

At least with a billboard the form contextualises it in our mind as an advert, and we basically consent to adverts because we understand them to be ephemeral things that come and go. Not to get too deep into art philosophy, but the form of a mural suggests some art carrying meaning growing from grassroots, not some vile corporate work imposed on a community.
Re: Opposite the Park View Chippy
Art has been hijacked by companies for adverts pretty much since advertising started.Spiral wrote: ↑Wed Jul 05, 2023 7:25 pmAt least with a billboard the form contextualises it in our mind as an advert, and we basically consent to adverts because we understand them to be ephemeral things that come and go. Just before the recrimination of being 'never happy' arrive, I have the right to think this is shite, and to express it, and to state why I think that. I'm anticipating something perhaps slightly resembling the discussion when the documentary was announced, but my advice to anyone who doesn't like reading an opinion that isn't brainless happy-clapping is to just log off.

Very good.
Re: Opposite the Park View Chippy
If it gets Burnley national and international interest and consequently more money/more fans so we can grow they can paint a whippet on a loom smoking a Woodbine as far as I'm concerned.

If we want fans, very few neutrals looking for a club to follow are going to want to follow a team which leans into an image of being the beating heart of an ugly post-industrial shithole. We need to lean into the fact we're on a really cool and interesting ascendancy. We need to find the fittest lass in Burnley and have her host a show on Burnley's YouTube channel where fans who are technically affiliated with the club (as in, involved with the in-house production of the show) present themselves as mere humble fans talking about the goings on at the club. Take the topics of Phil Bird's pre-match and half-time conversations with his co-commentator but have young people doing it, and make a 20-minute show every month. We need to project sexy-cool Burnley, not pie & peas Burnley.
Basically, we need content like this:

No, seriously, look at how well produced this content is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf9pdK79bWI
I use another City video as an example because they're the masters of it. They know how to tap into how younger people consume football these days. (This somewhat dovetails with the Thogden thread.)
We seem to be okay with a general image of a miserable chimney painted by a corporation making a documentary that gawks at the club while telling a story about Mormon missionaries. There's not one single thing in that sentence that is cool.
Get a model involved and you've captured the attention of pretty much any straight fourteen year-old boy for the entire duration of the video. He might not have been a Claret before, but he is now.

(No, I'm not being sexist or objectifying saying all this; I just remember being 14, and so do all of you.)

Re: Opposite the Park View Chippy
I'm gonna wait til its finished...
Re: Opposite the Park View Chippy
Can I just flog this dead horse a little bit longer and point out that if this has indeed been commissioned by Sky as part of the marketing for the documentary (which seems highly likely given it's the title of the documentary), it's worth observing the composition of this image, which places Alan Pace at the centre of it, and not something more intrinsic to Burnley FC. I think I might be due an apology or two from all those people who said I'm overreacting for suggesting a few months back that there's a strong possibility this documentary will not so much be a Burnley FC documentary as a documentary about Alan Pace (and Mormonism, with a bit of behind the scenes dressing room clips to make it look like a sports documentary), with Burnley FC framed as the object to Pace's subject. Commissioned works are very deliberate in their composition. In marketing, images have to communicate and convey a lot of information in a very efficient way, and you give prominence to the one thing that matters above everything else that you're trying to communicate.

Love it. Love murals in general though and if I had my way the whole area around the Turf would be covered in them.

Not really a mural in the artistic sense, though. claptrappers_union best called it for what it is:

True enough, but I love them so much and think we have far too few of them so I’m prepared to forgive that.

Re: Opposite the Park View Chippy
I love them too. I'd love the idea of coming off the train or bus and walking through town down to the Turf and seeing murals on every blank forgotten about space as though the sense of environment you feel being at the Turf is extended beyond the ground itself, Yorkshire Street and the pubs, the culvert, and deep into the town. Use mural art to push "the Turf" as an environment into every corner of Burnley town centre. Even if it's sanctioned work commissioned by Burnley FC rather than graffiti, it's still artistically ethical because it's the fans' own club, basically, and in theory the things the club does and the way it operates is done by our consent in a metaphysical sense.

Re: Opposite the Park View Chippy
I suppose it’s to give the documentary a bit of faux “street passion “ in the style of those euro game intros with flares , smoke , welcome to hell type guffery , while anyone actually with a glare etc would be arrested . It’s harmless enough in the corporate Disneyfication style of prem football I guess .

If they don’t finish that in a day, and get the filming done, there’s a good chance that the local youths will help them along with it tonight.
(Speaking as a once bored youth in that very area)

Re: Opposite the Park View Chippy
People turn up with these kind of comments with such predictability, such mechanical, clockwork regularity, that it makes me doubt the very concept of human free will; as though your reaction were a mere reflex below the level of an actual thought; as though some input (perceived negativity; moaning) must produce a necessary output (your comment) lest the pattern and process of your thought remain incomplete and the operation fail.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Wed Jul 05, 2023 10:04 pmAt least it gives the resident depressives something else to moan and get upset about.
