Instagram Threads

Post by 1989_claret » Thu Jul 06, 2023 9:16 am

Meta have launched a new app to rival Twitter called Threads that links with your Instagram account.

Anyone else signed up to it?

I have - funny thing is, I never used Instagram. I use Twitter loads but was sick to death of what it was becoming, so this looks a good alternative. So far I am impressed by it and how slick it is - the club have signed up this morning and a few other Burnley accounts so slowly I am able to get the types of news into my feed I am after.

The sooner they let you view only people you follow, the sooner it might rival twitter

Random blue ticks keep appearing my feed, which is what annoyed me about twitter

I don't mind too much at the moment as I'm trying to follow people I want to follow so they give me good ideas, but if it gets like twitter with the crypto and downright weirdos being promoted on to my feed, then that wouldn't be great

But Musk has really alienated a lot of twitter users, and this might be the best timed launch in history (with twitters recent issues)

This is the biggest difference and reason for my optimism with it, granted, only 10 hours of it being live though.

The fact that my Twitter feed (despite me blocking various right wing accounts, muting certain words and so on) was essentially an endless stream of nutjobs talking about trans people, crypto bro's, ads for sofas and 9999999999999999 Only Fans accounts trying to peddle their wares has ended me.

Seems alright so far. Not seen a flat earther yet so it’s got that on Twitter. So far.

Controlling the feed is going to be a real pain if you can't control who or what you see

Apparently you can snooze suggested posts on your instagram feed and that works on threads as well

(That is based on a quick search of threads so it could be complete ********)

None of these things appear in their final form. I do wonder if the full launch has happened sooner as a result of Twitter’s current woes. Probably.

Check out the privacy permissions on Instagram and Threads. Very intrusive compared to Twitter, health data, home address etc. big red warning signs for me, I won’t be using it, I’m also not convinced it would ever become the “go to” place for reporters, companies and politicians and would thus not feel as comprehensive. On Twitter I can search for “James Trafford” and be fairly sure I will see any developments on his transfer.

Does seem like they've launched at an opportune moment with a pretty crap product.

Your feed showing so much content atm is down to it having to build an algorithm for you.

Nothing to follow as yet but I’ve set up an account. I’ll have to work out how to use it I suppose now but will be used as ImTwitter is used I suspect.

Shocking how bad Threads is. No search function, no topics, hashtags, a feed of blue-tick people I have no interest in that I can't easily escape from.

Also bear in mind, if you sign up just to check it out - if you don't like it and delete it, Facebook (Meta) will also delete your instagram account.

No wonder the EU has not authorised it.

May well be true but Zuckerberg’s business model relates to the use of your personal data and information, whereas Musk has regularly commented that isn’t something he believes in. The ways that info can be used is potentially insidious. I ban those platforms in our house but do use Twitter.

I definitely view Threads as more of a threat which is why I stopped using FB, have never used Insta, and won’t be using Threads.

Musk fired 60% of his staff, made sarcastic comments about how he wouldn't miss them, and is now upset that they've gone elsewhere while his platform grinds to a slow and painful death

It will need to improve massively before I use it to any great degree

I've just gone on for the first time since yesterday afternoon, and I've had to scroll through a hundred stupid posts till I got to someone I actually follow, and even those are just duplicates of what they have already posted on twitter.

I quite like the layout, but it does need some work, particularly re trending topics, chronological timeline and not seeing everybody's replies on your main feed. To be fair, the main guy (not Zuck) has said they're working on all those things so fingers crossed they're implemented soon. I shouldn't be shocked by how much Musk has decimated Twitter, but I am. It's a total mess - dodgy content being pushed, the new blue tick system has totally ruined keeping track of any fast moving news event, out of date trends, random rate limits...somebody made the point yesterday that pretty much every decision he's made has been to recover his losses from a deal he tried to back out from, and it's difficult to disagree. He'll make it sub only within the year I reckon. Hopefully Threads can take up the mantle or he sells up.
