Barry Kilby has gone for a walk

Post by ClaretTony » Thu Jul 06, 2023 3:24 pm

I bumped into Barry last week and he told me he was going to take a walk with some friends to raise money for his prostate cancer appeal.

He’s walking from Liverpool to Leeds along the canal with it split into about ten walks. I’m not sure when he will be where but it would be good if we could give him some support along the way. If you are near to the canal, let me know and I’ll try to find out when they will be there.

Smashing bloke, top chairman and great to know his health is good which it must be if he’s taking this on.

My house backs onto the canal.

If you can find out when he’s passing Nelson/Brierfield I’ll keep a look out.

I’ve found out since posting this that they are not walking every day but once per week on a Wednesday and they’ve done the second leg today.

I’ll now try to find out when they are doing Burnley, Brierfield & Skipton. I’ll go and join him for the straight mile in Burnley to give him some support.

It's a shame it's not the Lancaster canal I would have joined the walk, he deserves credit for raising money & awareness to such a good cause, the L&L boasts some nice stretches.

would you happen to be the one with the big Burnley flag in the back garden? (cycled the route last year)

It does boast nice stretches. He told me last week that he’d found out that the half way point on the canal is at Clayton-Le-Moors which is where he’s from.

It's actually in Church but close to C-le-M.

Definitely Clayton le Moors. Unless they have shortened or lengthened it in the last 12 years.

Yes, there's a plaque on the towpath at Church which signifies the halfway point

There is a big Burnley flag in 1 of the gardens but you are going more into gargrave same side as the towpath if it's the same house next to the road.

Great news bud. Years ago I had two separate biopsies that both proved negative but with some abnormalities. They kept a close eye on me for years with regular PSA tests and so on. Quite worrying but I was assured that if I had it it would be treatable due to it being very early stages (if I’d had it). Men should get checked for this as if it’s found early it is easily cured and it is also very slow so it is simple common sense. Too many men die from it every year and it is so unnecessary. All I have to do now (for life) is take Dutasteride to keep the swelling down.
If you’re over 50 and haven’t been checked do it NOW. Don’t f*ck about. Just do it.

Great news Tribesmen , the all -clear is a life altering moment. I came across an old 2019 diary recently with the dates for my radical prostatectomy, for which I got the all clear in December 2019. I thanked Barry for his foresight in organising the testing days at the Turf which I know saved my life. For anyone reading this who doesn't know , get yourself tested even if you have no symptoms. It could change your life.
Since then I have been blessed to become a grandpa 3x over and that's a role to treasure.
Added to the thanks to Barry, I joined his trust making contributions on a monthly basis which help to ensure that the testing sessions continue so that other men will get the chance to become grandpa's too. I encourage all who can, to join his trust too. Who knows you might even win in the draw as well. Phone 07512 309214 | Email: info@thebkpca.com to find out more .

There’s going to be a delay in the walk being completed as Barry has broken a bone in his foot

Stage 5 on August 2nd, Chorley to Blackburn, is still on as planned. However, Stage 6 on August 9th from Blackburn to Huncoat has been postponed to allow Barry's return. It will now take place on Monday, September 11th.

Anyone know the daily routes they’re taking. The canal runs at the side of our village near Skipton, it would be nice to be able to give them some encouragement as they passed through, unless of course they already have.

It’s a weekly walk. Think they are doing around 10-15miles each week.

They got to Hapton this week so I’m expecting them to be passing me in Brierfield next week
