Firstly, apologies for going slightly off topic. Point is that basically anyone used to be able to browse it, and twitter up until recently has been one of the most widely accessible and immediate communication platforms available (and if you factor in the grey tick verification system, a very reliable platform, too, as it concerns local and govt. authorities), and this is especially useful whenever serious things happen so information can be communicated quickly and broadly, particularly by various different authorities. Even though, as you say, the police haven't given any updates, the point is that a mass communication platform has become to many people literally useless almost overnight, completely at the whim of an idiot owner. There's a whole debate about whether one individual, whoever they may be, should have that kind of power.

I predicted a scenario just like this — something horrible happening where you look to the internet for info — predicted it just a few days ago on the thread that was started on here when twitter made all the daft changes, and lo and behold a few days later I open this thread to read what's happened (because, like, I don't want to drive down Colne Rd if it's closed or dangerous or anything, you know), I go on twitter, and I remember that I can't view it because I don't have an account. Anyway, I'm sorry for drifting off the thread topic, but I feel it's a point that is somewhat relevant given we're basically all doing the same thing: searching online for information after something horrible has happened that is local to us.

The point is how access to information, something taken for granted in today's world but essential nonetheless, has effectively been restricted in a very arbitrary way.

You've been scrolling footy transfers for an hour in the afternoon. You've reached your limit inside that hour (not too hard to scroll past through 600 tweets in an hour, hour and a half if you scroll past tweets that are just emojis and one-word tweets). A bomb goes off, or there's a massive fire, or some other horrible thing, and the emergency services are referring people to twitter for updates on advice on where to go, where not to go, what to do, what the hell is happening, aaaaand oopsie, you've reached your limit today, soz, you can't get emergency updates. But it's okay, because it's a private business, and private businesses should be able to do what they want, on a whim, without notification — even to ignore the social responsibilities that come naturally when an organisation is operating at such a scale with so many stakeholders invested the platform the business provides. The free market will sort it out, right, and if people's lives are materially affected by the caprice of this business' moronic owner, it it's just a growing pain, it'll be resolved by market forces, it'll be reyt, stop being soft, it's only a terrorist attack, people die every day, isn't Elon brilliant, a genius, saviour of mankind.

I'm beginning to think Elon Musk might actually be the dumbest human being on earth.

You may have seen a lot of emergency services in Burnley earlier today (Friday, July 7) and we wanted to let you know what had happened.

We were called at shortly before 4pm to the KFC restaurant on Colne Road after a man pulled a canister from a bag and sprayed another man who he had been arguing with.

The offender and victim left the scene but a number of people in the area suffered symptoms including difficulty breathing and were either assessed at the scene by ambulance staff or were taken to hospital. Fortunately, no-one appears to have suffered any lasting effects.

The exact nature of the substance is not known at this time,

Part of Colne Road was closed for a time while emergency services dealt with the scene and we thank you for your co-operation and understanding.

An investigation into the incident has been launched and enquiries are ongoing.

Anyone with information should contact 101 quoting log 0903 of today (July 7)

Still shocking, but thankfully not as bad as first feared or social media reported.

If you type in Google Burnley news - there's a few snippets of information about the incident & stuff already on social media, I'm not sure how much more information you could possibly want than what's already widely available, if the information isn't available or scarce straightaway it's because people are trying to piece together what's happened before reporting accurately, some people just want to know the back end of a fart within a nano second of something happening it's the impatient world of today we live in.

Some people just consistently and spectacularly miss the point, don't they? When I draw attention to a problem and state it well, I'm not soliciting a solution from yokels on here, especially so-called solutions as brain dead as 'dur dur have you tried complying with the force causing the problem?', or, 'dur dur have you tried regressing to outdated methods?' Too many people on this forum struggle to grasp wider concepts; you lack abstract thought. If I have to state it explicitly, which it seems I do, trying to find out about road closures is not the same thing as having a nosey and looking for gossip, and of late one of the easiest and most accessible ways of finding this out has been arbitrarily hamstrung. If you lack the imagination to see how this might cause easily avoidable problems, I don't know how I can state it in ways you will understand. I think it's possible that this is one of those cases where people's thought process is, 'oh, well Spiral said it, so I'll put on my contrarian hat because I think he's a bellend.'

This is a libertarian mindset and you can probably tell from my sardonic comment about leaving everything to the free market that I don't value this mindset. I think this mindset is sophomoric and immature. You use the quote (possibly apocryphally) attributed to Gandhi, "be the change you want to see in the world," but you don't seem to realise that there are ideas to advocate beyond just 'make your own competitor or boycott'. There needs to be some kind of charter that defines the rights and privileges of organisations, publicly traded and privately owned, whenever their operations become woven into the social fabric, otherwise you get, to use the highest example I can think of, an East India Company type situations where things get out of hand and a lot of harm is caused in pursuit of profit. Social media governance is kind of the wild west at the moment, where they are effectively publishers without being recognised as publishers, not wanting to be bound by laws that govern publishing, but reaping the rewards of publishing as a business. For me this is about the interplay of privileges and responsibilities. If you are able to (theoretically) profit off your social value, that ought to come with responsibilities. Perhaps others only take a superficial view of this, but I know I'm not the only one to recognise the danger of effectively allowing publishers too much power.
