Over rated films…

Post by LoveCurryPies » Mon Jul 10, 2023 11:44 pm

Oceans 13. Truly great actors but so, so predictable. 95% of the movie is setting up the predictable ending.

Only Jaws 3 and 4 were worse. Unless you know otherwise 😉

That Bank of Dave film is the most overrated film I've seen recently.

I think Shawshank is a good film, but it's held in higher esteem than I think it deserves. I don't know if it'd even make a top 100 for me, yet it always lands near the top of those kind of lists. I'd watch it again, but for me personally it's overrated in the truest sense of the word.

I don't know if you can call films that were universally panned, like the Jaws sequels, 'overrated'.

Ooof, love Wolf of Wall Street. Not in the 'I want to be like them, aren't these people so cool' kind of way that some people enjoy it. It's just so energetic. I think a person's relationship to that film is a bit of a litmus test. If you like or are rooting for those people, you're a bellend. Kinda like how people watch Fight Club and idealise Tyler Durden without realising that his character is designed to be read as a critique of the values and behaviours embodied in him.

edit-love the last two mentioned, too. Last three are all rated very highly to be fair, so definitely fit the thread.

Wolf of Wall street is superb plus it has Margot Robbie in so automatically gets bonus points for that

Most over rated I would say all of the Fast and Furious - absolute TURD

The Fast and Furious films vary wildly in quality. Fast Five is a great Friday night, take your brain out and have a laugh type action film. Some of the ones that followed were fun, too. The earlier ones were crud, the most recent one was really bad. I'd forgotten that John Cena was in the franchise, and him turning up about half an hour in and turning up the camp factor was honestly the only thing that kept me watching to the end.

Star Wars. The internal logic doesn't make sense. (I'm told the avatar films make even less sense, but I haven't seen them.)

In what way?

For what it's worth, I think holding Star Wars to a standard of logical coherence misunderstands the aims and aspirations of the film. Like a religious text, it concerns itself with moral ideals that are unambiguous, at the expense of realism that might get in the way of those ideas being presented clearly.

Like many other space films, it treats a planet as having a population of thousands all in contact with each other. Planets aren't the size of small towns, they have to be huge to be inhabitable. You can't defeat an empire with a few small battles. Spaceships left in the desert can't take off again without servicing. The two men who went against the Admiral's orders in a later film and caused the loss of 90% of the army, weren't disciplined. (Or shot.) The wookies are too small and slow to win any battles. All sorts.

As entertainment it's good, and like you say perhaps that's all they aimed for, but it's held (by some) to a higher standard - hence overrated. IMHO!

Shawshank Redemption may be a decent film but it’s often held up as the best film ever and I can’t see why.

Wookies are not small, nor slow. I think you mean Ewoks…

I get your point though. Star Wars as an 8 year old was amazing and fantastic and many other superlatives and each subsequent sequel built on that until the prequels arrived whereby the mysticism of Star Wars as a child remain in my psyche, so I clearly wanted to enjoy them.

The more recent films were good, but also massively flawed to me because as an adult I can clearly understand where the problems lie. My teenager thought they were great though.

Perspective has a lot to play here

Most overrated film I have seen so far (as rated by members of this board) is the latest in Disney's wave of destruction of beloved franchises in the name of replacing established traditional male leads with stronger, better female leads - Indiana Jones Dial of Dysentry.

Star Wars isn't overrated, on my opinion. Though George Lucas is. All Star Wars films after the original trilogy are poor. Disney have really dropped the ball with it - they are dreadful now.

Going back to Lucas though, he's a poor filmmaker but he he fluked the original Star Wars.

I'm all up for a bit of diversity, but these recent reboots are awful, and these strong female characters are poorly written. They are ‘Mary Sues’ who are just awesome.

Definitely agree about Star Wars films being overrated. Great spectacle, but considering they were essentially initially aimed at the younger audience, they sport plots you need a PhD to have even a remote chance of following. Tbh, I don't believe they ever have a plot and are just an ensemble of amazing special effects, whacky alien creatures and futuristic technology, with a lot of explosions. Emperor's New clothes stuff!!

I think personal experience can play a part in an individuals judgment, too.

Personally, Whiplash is one of my favourite films of all time but then again I had an individual in my life who was almost identical to the antagonist in the movie. The blurred line between bully and someone who drives someone on to the highest 0.5% of their skills is pertinent to me, because I've had it done to me.

My nomination is for Avatar. Its just last of the mohicans with aliens, innit?

Tenet - the last Chris Nolan film
Good film ( saw it in an almost empty Odeon in Leics sq- covid) but it was just “ too much” as if they had to burn through the huge budget with more and more trickery and effects so alas overrated imo .

All Bond films - find them naff and cringeworthy humour running through them.

Bank of Dave was utter sh-te but not sure anyone rated it as a serious attempt at a film tbh.

Made even more heinous by the fact that - as we later find out - large swathes of those working to build these engineering marvels were prisoners of war and the very people the rebel scu.m claimed to be trying to free. The morals and judgements of this terrorist group are highly questionable.

I think with Star Wars you aren't taking into account the effects for the time

I'm a huge fan, but there are very few films with a better start than Star Wars

The only one of the sequels worth watching is "The Force Awakens" btw (unless you count Rogue One, which is superb)
