It would be annoying to lose it this way, but its been really close, and that is a really good sign that we are going the right way

It’s like a broken record. The captain has made countless decisions in this series, some of them have worked and others not. To pick one I think is ridiculous and to suggest it’s cost us the Ashes even more.
Spot on

You can’t educate Yorkies on this new cricket…. They’d still rather see Boycott digging in.

Don't you go dissing Sir Geoffrey on here, I'm not having it.

It's fair to say the great man will be astonished at the shots being played in a Test match, great entertainment and skill levels on display no doubt.

Thanks Dan but can't make it, I've got an ex players reunion at Earby that starts at 4, shame Chappie won't be there but hopefully his Dad will be.

Stopped raining here in Radcliffe so hopefully they can get out there.

If they'd have inspected when the rain stopped half an hour ago they could be out there now!

They should be out there now, they didn’t need half an hour, both sides out just playing one bounce not exactly warming up

Boring so far today. Feel England need a wicket soon to get the crowd going. Certainly 1 could bring 2 or 3

Still a great strip to bat on.

Hard to get good players out when they are being cautious.

Maybe try the off spinners?

Extremely surprised that given the conditions batting looks so easy. We're not bowling badly, but unless something weird suddenly happens we're relying on the Aussies to make a massive mistake to get themselves out right now. Just glad to see their actually playing tbf, after the morning we had.

Got to take your chances!! The only chance of the day (so far) and Crawley decides to treat a fairly regulation slip catch like it's an incoming Russian hand grenade!!! Very poor from him and could be THE most costly miss of the series!!

A free hit?

The man is battling to save his Test career.

It was a superb knock.
Whilst everyone is entitled to an opinion, there's absolutely no chance that Bairstow's place was / is under threat.
It's been made absolutely clear that his style suits the new Stokes / McCullum philosophy, and they aren't going to recall Foakes.
If we were going for a specialist wk, then that would have happened after Bairstow's disasters in the first two tests.
Of course it was a superb knock, but in the context of the game yesterday - and batting with Anderson, it gave Bairstow complete license to go into 20 / 20 mode.
That's what I mean't when I said that his innings was effectively a "free hit"".

Believe what you want.

Imo with a test quality keeper we'd be battling to go 4-0 up in this match.

Others will see it differently.

Oh, I don't disagree. My point is that whilst many believe we should play our best keeper, (whose Test batting average is good), it's quite clear that the current management and captain don't see it like that.

To get Foakes and Bairstow in the same team you have to drop a bowler which isn’t going to happen whilst Stokes is not bowling sadly.

No. To play Bairstow as a specialist batter, you have to drop a batter.

Which they weren’t going to do although pope has since got injured and they still didn’t do it. There was nobody really you could drop for him as much as I would have liked to see Bairstow as just a batter.
The only options to replace a batter would have been:

Ducket scored lot of runs
Crawley you just need to listen to how the coach speaks about him never gonna be dropped
Pope just made Vice Captain
Brooke scored too many runs

We seem to be concerned about having a a regular spinner so as I said the only way they would have got Foakes in would be to have dropped a pace bowler. Which isn’t going to happen whilst Stokes isn’t bowling.

Or simply to play Foakes for Bairstow in the first two tests and have him bat at 7.
His batting average is only minus 5 compared to JB and after his serious injury Bairstow looked miles off it at Edgbaston and Lords.

Yeh and his interviews last night would suggest he agreed he shouldn’t have had the gloves. They were consistent and said as soon as he was fit he would be back so JB was always going to play and I guess with the way the team had shaped it was the only place he could fit into.

The sad truth is that unless we can get a few hours play tomorrow that his performance in the first test with the gloves along with some of the others catching probably cost us .

Not great. Although this time yesterday, according to the forecast, there was no chance of any play today and yet they got 30 overs in. Fingers crossed we get enough time tomorrow, couple of hours could be enough

Not raining in Manchester or Hoylake (where the weather comes from) at the minute but they are expecting rain at some point.

Hopefully get lucky.
