Inn On The Wharf
Inn On The Wharf
Good news! After it's doors closed seven years ago This heritage pub is re-opening late in September.
Nice to hear that a pub is opening for a change.

People book pubs to have a party about the gender of their upcoming birth? Seriously?!

Sounds like it's something imported from the US

My initial thought was a gender reveal was to do with coming out, until Mrs HP corrected me. Think I'm getting old.
Anyway, great to see a pub opening. Good luck.

Great to see any pub reopening and especially that one. Well played to those involved and good luck to them.
As for "gender reveal" parties. I've never been to one, never been asked to attend one and if anyone ever did ask me I'd drive a nail through my foot and go to A&E just to avoid going. Drivel of the highest order.

It must be very close to the seven years they refer to because it was definitely open in August 2017

My grandson and partner had a reveal party earlier in the year and it was great fun.

Why? - the chances of them changing their sex when they are older aren't high, and only really weirdo parents wouldn't back their choice anyway, because its not their life, its theirsdougcollins wrote: ↑Sat Jul 22, 2023 8:43 amI'd probably be quite cautious about doing a gender reveal these days.
Its not my thing, finding out the sex of a kid before its born is 100% not my thing as well, loads of things that are done nowadays are 100% not my thing
But people do them, and there isn't any harm in it, and if it makes people happy, then I'm all for it
A bit more tolerance of modern stuff on this board wouldn't go amiss, especially in the close season

Brave move to be opening a pub in Burnley centre these days, good luck to them though.

Not just town centres
Do a fair bit of cycling and the decline in both pubs and village shops is very noticeable - even cafes are struggling

A lad I know pretended he was doing a gender reveal while he was hiking up a mountain. He livestreamed it but kept "losing" his signal before he got to the top. His wife's dippy mates went into meltdown.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jul 22, 2023 8:54 amGender reveals can go wrong - this one is former Lancashire cricketer Oliver Newby and his wife revealing the gender of their second baby to their daughter

5 quid a pint plus at some of these gaffs. With food included, for a family, upwards of 80 quid if not more for a meal out
Thats some peoples shopping budget for the week

Yeah the Loom and Circ have been good additions to the town, probably the only places worth bothering with these days, along with the Bridge.ClaretInLeeds wrote: ↑Sat Jul 22, 2023 9:16 amThey already own the Circ which seems to be doing well despite its location.
Thing is though the older crowd go up there now, and the younger crowd don't go out till midnight, not sure what sort of crowd the Inn on the Wharf are aiming to attract?

If it’s going to be a sports bar, you would assume they will have pool tables, shuffleboards etc - that’s a niche market in Burnley and it’s only a 5 minute walk away from town.jrgbfc wrote: ↑Sat Jul 22, 2023 9:21 amYeah the Loom and Circ have been good additions to the town, probably the only places worth bothering with these days, along with the Bridge.

Doesn't the Coal yard (BB11) already do stuff like that? I don't go out in Burnley loads these days so not sure. Like I said hopefully they can make a go of it, just think it will be very tough.ClaretInLeeds wrote: ↑Sat Jul 22, 2023 9:23 amIf it’s going to be a sports bar, you would assume they will have pool tables, shuffleboards etc - that’s a niche market in Burnley and it’s only a 5 minute walk away from town.

Re: Inn On The Wharf
I honestly can’t answer that question - I know they have booths with TV’s in, but don’t think they are a sports bar per se. They are owned by bees knees - so are renowned for cheap, shite beer.
Re: Inn On The Wharf
Same i dont bother with town
Bypass it to the fan zone or get a pint or 2 on the stand

It would be good if they stocked a decent selection of cask beers from local brewers. They might have a chance of succeeding then.

Agreed. My office is next door. It would be great if they stock some decent beers. I'd like to see some Bowland and Vocation for instance.
Nothing more frustration than the pisspoor selections at some of the town centre bars. Choice of Stella, Kronenbourg, Carling, Heineken... nothing even remotely close to a bottle of Blond Witch or even a 'massmarket-craft' like Punk IPA.

The Inn on the Wharf has potential to get the punters in if they do this. Even on quieter week nights. People flock to the Bridge for decent beer on week nights.

Re: Inn On The Wharf
You're right, I agree.
It takes a special location/reputation to create a bar which attracts drinkers who enjoy this variety. The Bridge is one such excellent example. I would just hope that they include some decent beers in their range. Even offering a selection of bottles is a significant step from many of the town centre identikit bars.

Many kids drink Brew Dog and Beavertown keg beers though. They have realised that they may as well pay a little bit more for something that actually tastes good.

They do if enough real ale drinkers pop in for an occasional pint. I suggest you have a day out in Halifax, Sowerby Bridge or even Todmorden for evidence of this. All 3 locations have a thriving real ale scene.
