Good news! After it's doors closed seven years ago This heritage pub is re-opening late in September.
Nice to hear that a pub is opening for a change.

Craig and I are excited to announce that we are now officially the new owners of the Inn on the Wharf, Manchester Road, Burnley.
As most of you will know, the pub has not been open for 7 years and is currently going through a full refurbishment. The function room will be open from the 20th August and bookings are now be taken. Keep your eyes peeled for the official opening of the downstairs bar, which will be open to the public on September 29th.
Bookings are now being taken for, Christmas, Wedding's, Engagements, Christenings, Birthdays, Baby showers, Gender reveals, Funerals etc, to inquire about the function room call

My initial thought was a gender reveal was to do with coming out, until Mrs HP corrected me. Think I'm getting old.

Great to see any pub reopening and especially that one. Well played to those involved and good luck to them.
As for "gender reveal" parties. I've never been to one, never been asked to attend one and if anyone ever did ask me I'd drive a nail through my foot and go to A&E just to avoid going. Drivel of the highest order.

Why? - the chances of them changing their sex when they are older aren't high, and only really weirdo parents wouldn't back their choice anyway, because its not their life, its theirs

Its not my thing, finding out the sex of a kid before its born is 100% not my thing as well, loads of things that are done nowadays are 100% not my thing

But people do them, and there isn't any harm in it, and if it makes people happy, then I'm all for it

A bit more tolerance of modern stuff on this board wouldn't go amiss, especially in the close season

Not just town centres

Do a fair bit of cycling and the decline in both pubs and village shops is very noticeable - even cafes are struggling

A lad I know pretended he was doing a gender reveal while he was hiking up a mountain. He livestreamed it but kept "losing" his signal before he got to the top. His wife's dippy mates went into meltdown.

Its pure and simple the cost of living
5 quid a pint plus at some of these gaffs. With food included, for a family, upwards of 80 quid if not more for a meal out

Thats some peoples shopping budget for the week

Yeah the Loom and Circ have been good additions to the town, probably the only places worth bothering with these days, along with the Bridge.
Thing is though the older crowd go up there now, and the younger crowd don't go out till midnight, not sure what sort of crowd the Inn on the Wharf are aiming to attract?

If it’s going to be a sports bar, you would assume they will have pool tables, shuffleboards etc - that’s a niche market in Burnley and it’s only a 5 minute walk away from town.

Doesn't the Coal yard (BB11) already do stuff like that? I don't go out in Burnley loads these days so not sure. Like I said hopefully they can make a go of it, just think it will be very tough.

I honestly can’t answer that question - I know they have booths with TV’s in, but don’t think they are a sports bar per se. They are owned by bees knees - so are renowned for cheap, shite beer.

Agreed. My office is next door. It would be great if they stock some decent beers. I'd like to see some Bowland and Vocation for instance.
Nothing more frustration than the pisspoor selections at some of the town centre bars. Choice of Stella, Kronenbourg, Carling, Heineken... nothing even remotely close to a bottle of Blond Witch or even a 'massmarket-craft' like Punk IPA.

Agreed. In my opinion pubs have more chance of success these days if they do stock a decent cask and craft beer offering. Along with decent food of course.
The Inn on the Wharf has potential to get the punters in if they do this. Even on quieter week nights. People flock to the Bridge for decent beer on week nights.

Unfortunately real ale drinkers popping in for an occasional pint doesn't keep pubs going.

You're right, I agree.
It takes a special location/reputation to create a bar which attracts drinkers who enjoy this variety. The Bridge is one such excellent example. I would just hope that they include some decent beers in their range. Even offering a selection of bottles is a significant step from many of the town centre identikit bars.

Totally agree. It’s no surprise pubs close when they serve up so much **** beer. You need craft ales and decent IPAs.

They do if enough real ale drinkers pop in for an occasional pint. I suggest you have a day out in Halifax, Sowerby Bridge or even Todmorden for evidence of this. All 3 locations have a thriving real ale scene.
