Sounds like a copy / paste of The Greyhound (Sam Smiths) in Altham. Just had a full refurb when landlord was caught on his mobile I heard. Pub was swiftly shut 'temporarily.' That was in 2018.

Re: Tim Bobbin
Sam Smith’s is a bizarre brewery. It’s almost as if they’ve no interest in making money.
There are/were two near me. One is always dead and seems intent on only catering to about three locals and a dog. Another is in a great location, but has been shut for about 5 years - Sam Smith’s continue to own the building.
Joe Lycett did an amusing piece on them a few years back..

The whole ‘you can’t use your mobile’ must be a big publicity stunt they’re just playing up to.
Either that or old Humphrey is a complete nut job.

Cant see it making a do, its struggled whenever its been open for as long as I can remember.
I think the sort of atmosphere they want in Sam Smith pubs (silence) isn't really the atmosphere the majority of folk want when they go out with mates for an evening, plus the beer choices aren't very good. I just find the places very depressing.

I was once in on my own and had my phone out to check the football scores, I was told almost straight away that it wasn't allowed. I also thought it was a publicity stunt but perhaps not.

Re: Tim Bobbin
Two things here, firstly if you refuse you'll be barred.
Secondly, it's not the managers who make the rules, it's the owner of the brewery. He's sacked loads of managers on the spot if the rules are broken, no matter how insignificant they may seem.

Not correct. I was a regular a few years back and it was always a really busy pub. Large catchment area, very little competition nearby etc. Having said that, it might now struggle to get back to what it was. Owner does appear to be a strange character though, no doubt about that.

The problem is they fall down on a lot of those other qualities, particularly the good beer. Exception being their bottled Chocolate Stout and Yorkshire Stigo.

I got warned in bispham hotel which is a Sam Smith's establishment I wasn't aware of the rules, I actually thought the barman was joking when he asked me to put my phone away, it's a very strict policy & he is known to appear unannounced checking the policy is adhered to.

Are their pubs still cash-only? I'm only asking out of curiosity. I usually avoid them because I'm not a fan of their beer.
Also, the phone rule is bizarre. I can just about understand them having a rule about making noisy phone calls inside their pubs, but using your phone to read something online while you're waiting for someone? That's bonkers because it's not harming anyone. Anyway, plenty of other pub chains crying out for our business.

I wonder if they struggle to get people to run their pubs? It's a hard enough job without having to enforce utterly pointless rules or face dismissal and being booted out of your home.

There's only one Tim Bobbin outside Burnley, situated at Clapham Common. Many years ago I went in for Sunday breakfast, and the Dalai Lama was sat reading the Sunday Times.

To be honest most people will comply & won't kick a fuss up if it's a problem you leave or finish your drink, some people actually like the rules & will always go in, the barman was polite enough with me & explained the reasoning which I fully understood & complied with.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 3:45 pmI wonder if they struggle to get people to run their pubs? Re: Tim Bobbin
Not often this happens, but I’m in full agreement with Rowls.
There is a place in the market for Sam Smith’s Pubs.
I’ve been to loads up and down the country.
The Bobbin is just around the corner from where my folks still live and, when it was open, I’d usually pop in for one when I was visiting them.
I actually quite enjoyed putting my phone away for the duration and having a chat with some of the regulars.
The refurb they did in there a few years back made it a very pleasant environment to do this in.
I’ll be glad if it does reopen. It’s a good boozer.

Re: Tim Bobbin
When I was growing up and heard people talk of this Burnley pub I had in down for the Tin Bobbin, It was only when I passed it aged about 11 that I discovered its real name. At the time I never wondered why it was so named.dougcollins wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 4:53 pmThere's only one Tim Bobbin outside Burnley, situated at Clapham Common. It may be widely known around Gannow but I've only fairly recently come across the works of said caricaturist (aka the "Lancashire Hogarth") whose real name was John Collier.
(Not to be confused with John Collier, John Collier - the window to watch).
RE the phone policy - I dont like loud music in pubs/ people having loud phone conversations but not allowing you to check your phone to arrange a rendezvous/ check sports scores etc seems far too prohibitive.

That’s not true. There’s a Tim Bobbin in Milnrow, where John Collier used to live, and also a Wetherspoon called the Tim Bobbin in Urmston, where he was born.dougcollins wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 4:53 pmThere's only one Tim Bobbin outside Burnley, situated at Clapham Common. i wonder how Sinclairs in manchester circumvents the rules, probably due to the amount of income it makes.
i've never had a problem using my phone in there.
also during good weather, sporting events etc.. its full of people having a whale of a time, swearing, dancing, singing, even heaven forbid checking their phones

I’m in a Sam Smiths pub in London right now.
Pint of Taddy for £6.60 and I’m happily using my phone to write this, albeit outside. Staff currently ignoring all phone use… maybe this is rogue branch!

Re: Tim Bobbin
The no mobile rule seems ridiculous to me. It's like they are trying to turn back time. Do they allow you to read a newspaper? What's the difference between reading a physical newspaper or one on your phone?

The Pizza was £10, and the Dalai Lama gave you a £20 note. You took it, put it in the till, and served the next customer. When he asked where his tenner was, you told him that change must come from within.

Re: Tim Bobbin
A newspaper requires a much higher level of concentration and effort
Adverts in newspapers don't "pop up", play music, require closing or use video to distract you from what you are reading
Newspapers don't make a noises like phones
A newspaper won't prompt you to read different article when you're half way through one
Newspapers don't track your location or take and share data on what you're reading
Newspapers can be shared around a pub - you don't need a code or biometrics to unlock one
Newspapers don't prompt you to check your social media once you've finished reading them
Traditional newspapers have strong editorial processes
Massive psychological difference between reading a real newspaper and reading news on your phone.
Re: Tim Bobbin
Fair points Rowls bit the sale of physical newspapers has dwindled in the last 15 years or so. Without the online versions most newspapers would.go bankrupt.

Yes, there's a place for digital media and it has its benefits.
But, generally speaking, people truly don't understand the how much interactive media on our phones is influencing us and manipulating our behaviours.
Interestingly, the UN has recently begun a campaign to have mobile phones banned from schools because of the negative impact they have on concentration and learning.

Re: Tim Bobbin
I was brought up around the Bobbin area . Started drinking there in the 80's pre-mobile phones . two rooms. the tap room and the Lounge. Over in the corner next to the window they called it the funeral parlour.
My old man like many of his era would go out for a few scoops around 9pm and stay until last orders nearly every night of the week. He would take my mum out Friday Saturday and Sunday up Mullards or Ighten mount and start in the bobbin. They had friends who used the pub it was a place to meet your friends
Generation after generation of young lads & lasses would use the tap room, It was always a busy pub a real centre of community feel to it. Meet up at the Bobbin then take a cab or bus into town and sometimes go back for last orders.
I never liked the refurb , all wood no soft furnishing too many little rooms it completely lost its character. It was more comfortable sitting on a park bench. It wasn't a gastro pub so not a place to go for something to eat with the family for a meal
Times have moved on , we have become addicted to our phones, going to the pub isn't just about drinking one brand of beer. They want choices of alcoholic drinks ,entertainment, good food, freedom for phones games, TV sport sport etc I can't see it making a do with those draconic measures. times have moved on from the days when people went to the pub everynight. I understand he is trying to create a niche market and a brand that spells out tradition. However nostalgia only carries it so far, it needs drinkers, not once a year pub goers.

The Petre Arms at Langho has been closed since 2017 with no sign of reopening. Sam smiths don’t seem to have a problem with sitting on a load of property that’s making them no money.
As for Sam Smiths pubs, they’re like Wetherspoons in that they serve a purpose in keeping the oddballs out of the decent boozers

I don't have any knowledge of what is happening, but when they painted the window frames they I think have put two additional adverts in the windows advertising for a couple to run it.
