Reading & Wokingham Borough Based Clarets

Post by AJM191 » Tue Jul 25, 2023 11:27 am

Hi all,

I wanted to post as over recent times it seems my 7 year old has attracted alot of attention from Clarets based in the local area who have spoken to him as he proudly wore his Burnley kits. Most recently, last night while shopping with his nan in Sainsburys.

Having been in the area for about 10 years, I have personally not seen many other Clarets myself. With that in mind I wanted to put a shout out to see how many there are and where they are?

Thanks

AJM

Amazing to hear from you 😁

It's certainly good to know there are more of us in the area. Hopefully there are a few more of us.

There's a couple in Didcot, some in Basingstoke I think

I used to live in Newbury, Reading, Basingstoke and Fleet and I was amazed at how many cars I saw with BFC kits or stickers. I saw a lad walking through Basingstoke in a Burnley shirt too. The impression I got was there was a few of us knocking round that area, certainly enough for a meet up if it could be arranged.

I'm in Basingstoke these last 20 years or so, seen a few Clarets around over the years but most of the claret and blue shirts I see at the rail station on Saturday mornings in the season are Hammers- loads of them here. This town was a new town on the 60s 70s and a lot of folk came from London bring their footy allegiances with them (and their families have often retained them).
Lots of followers of Chelsea, QPR, Charlton, Milwall etc etc as well as the more local Saints, Pompey and Reading.

The town's footy team just managed a few 1000+ gates towards the end of last (promotion) season despite the population now being a fair bit bigger than Burnley.

Used to be in Newbury - but recently moved even further South - Between Bournemouth and Christchurch which adds another hour each way to my regular trips to the Turf - we have ST's again this year!

I am amazed at the response and the amount of us around. Its nice to see we get about a bit 🤣

I agree with TsarBomba, it would certainly be worth getting something together for the coming season. Find a good place to watch live games or meet for a drink. Would this be something that would be of interest? I am happy to look at it if so.

Woodleyclaret we will be quite close geographically.

Born and grew up in Reading. Somehow got playing against a young lad, whose dad was a Burnley fan. The dad organised a trip for a load of kids and dad to Spurs, one year.

I am based in Wokingham, centrally but happy
come over to reading or hurst side.
Would be great to meet and watch some games this coming season with some fellow Clarets. A couple of the pubs in town have multi screens and always happy to put Burnley on if they are playing.

Having seen the responses and the amount of Clarets in the area I would like to propose a first meet for the our Premier League opening fixture Vs Man City.

As the people who have commented cover Berkshire (& more) I would suggest the location be Reading as it is a short(ish) train ride to most of the locations in the feed. Also as it is the first, I will organise through this feed and should we get a good response and the night go well I will look to make something more official going forward. If there is interest please let me know and I will get started with something simple.

Id be up for some of the group get-togethers. I doubt Id make them all because I follow other sports too but would definately make some if in Reading- an easy train trip for me (assuming rail strikes permit). Looks OK for 11th August.

Not to worry Woodleyclaret, providing it goes well there will certainly be more to come. Hopefully can get some legs in this and bring together many Berkshire Clarets.

I was born in Reading and now live in Banbury. When I used to watch Reading at Elm Park there was another lad that stood on the Tilehurst Road end with a Burnley hat on.

Berkshire Clarets (Originally Reading & Wokingham Borough Based Clarets)

Post by AJM191 » Sat Aug 05, 2023 10:07 pm

Good evening all,

As you can see I have changed the name of the feed to the Berkshire Clarets for the Clarets based in Berkshire and surrounding areas. As previously mentioned, I am looking to set up a first meet in Reading for the Man City game next Friday (11/08).

I would like to get some numbers so I can book an area at a venue in the town centre (currently thinking Walkabout or O'Niels). Could I please get a yes from those interested and a preferred venue. I will look to book Tue evening / Wed morning.

Thank you all in advance. UTC

Dead right. My pal lived in Bracknell (also new town). Land bought by London GLC and he was from Hackney. His mum and dad got offered 3 bed council house and lots from the community took the opportunity. Dyed in the wool Hammer.

I'm up for Friday night meeting/watching Clarets in Reading, doing nowt else that evening and no train strikes planned so travel should be a doddle for me from Basingstoke.
Been in O'Neills loads of times watching footy or rugby- dont mind that venue at all. Must be 6/7 years since I was in The Walkabout but was Ok there for watching sport back then.
Id guess there'll be plenty of space in that bottom end of O'Neill's on a Monday, always nice to see that Reading Town Hall façade across the road too.

Thank you all for a great response. Other fans welcome as it will be helpful for people to have a friend around with the caveat that everyone behaves 🤣

I will reserve an area in either location tomorrow afternoon and will create a seperate feed specific to the event. I will look to try O'Niels first and then Walkabout and get the reservation set up from 1930 hrs although I'll probably arrive a tad earlier.

Looking forward to meeting some local Clarets. Have a great week all and let the excitement for KO build. UTC

I’m in North Camp (Farnborough), a stones throw from the station. I know there’s another claret about 100 yards away, as they have a sticker on the car. I keep hanging about it hoping they’ll see me!

I spotted another car emblazoned with Clarets paraphernalia the other week. We’re surrounded!

Would love to meet up - my young kids are avid Clarets now and it’s lovely to see!
