Worst scenes in a film

Post by fidelcastro » Sat Jul 29, 2023 6:22 pm

Three off the top of my head, that made me uncomfortable for different reasons...

The gang rape scene in 'Death Wish 2' which had to be heavily cut before it could get a release. The edited version was bad enough though.

The scene in 'Casino" where the gangsters are beaten half to death and then buried alive. Pure look away stuff.

The scene where they open the cocoon in, erm, "Cocoon'. I was only a child when I saw it, but it upset me so much, I've avoided ever seeing it again since.

Have people got others that have "stayed" with them?

Don't post clips, if the scene is particularly shocking. It'll save the MODS a job.

Strange that you've posted this when I was having a similar discussion with friends this morning.

Rape scenes are shocking, I think directors really like them, probably call it art. Here's 2 shockers:

Straw Dogs
A Clockwork Orange.

Boatshed Bill beat me to it with them two. I don’t watch prison dramas as they usually bring male rape into the story. Even Shawshank, without showing, brought it into the storyline.

Michael Winner directed the one I mentioned in 'Death Wish 2' which rather says it all.

I wonder if he said to the actress playing the victim "calm down dear, it's only a rape scene!"

I've not seen Shawshank Redemption. I actually had no idea what it was about.

Not seen that film but it sounds like it may be similar to the scene
in The Sopranos in the Italian restaurant featuring a mouth, a marble top
table and a foot.

Didn't look good.

Yeah, +1 to the bite the curb scene. Shot in black and white, near naked skinhead with a swastika tattoo with a smile on his face as he gets arrested. Very chilling. Its a really good film though. Ethan Suplee plays the big fat racist but is a really funny actor in Mallrats and My Name Is Earl, and I think it's John Connor from Terminator 2 that is the younger brother.

The Alien bursting out of John Hurt would've been good to see 'live' at a cinema in 1979. I didn't watch it until 20 years after it came out, I knew what was going to happen, and it was still ferkin horrible.

The scene in The Fly when Goldblum has vomited onto that fellas ankle and kind of plays with it as it's melting, really turned my stomach. I find the old 'special effects' as we called them then (latex, prosthetics etc) to be a lot more disturbing than modern CGI

The Butcher of a captive scene in “Bone Tomahawk” where the captors split the cowboy whilst he’s upside down 🫣. The screams and sounds of bone crunching was awful!!🤢🤮.

The rest of the film is too ******* boring for words. That's the highlight.

I'll pick:-
1. The bits in some bond films when they force the title of the film jarringly into the script.
2. The parts of any film where George Clooney appears on the screen
3. Films where the male lead forces himself onto somebody (usually just to kiss them), and rather than tell him to **** off, spit at him, knee him in the balls etc, they do a wriggle of "get off me" and then meekly surrender.
4. The script in blackhawk down, although I've never been unfortunate enough to see the whole thing.
5. The scene where holly golightly chucks cat out of the taxi in the rain. Even though I know that she will later go and rescue it.
6. The sections in love actually with the irritating American woman who has the needy brother. It needs a cut with her removed.

But the very worst was in a documentary on fgm, years ago, when they showed some poor African child being tied to two posts, and then stopped the pictures but left her screaming running as she was savagely assaulted. That was totally horrific. How the **** could anybody allow or actively encourage that to their own daughter?

I felt uneasy at many of the torture scenes in Hostel. Alien didn’t bother me one bit tbh.

Quite often the most shocking scenes involve an element of mental imagery for me, where the pain inflicted is inferred and not necessarily shown.

A Serbian Film

The final scene is honestly vile. Watched a lot of films over the years and never seen anything like it. Have never watched it again and never will.

The first one that upset me was the scene in "The Railway Children" where the cross-country runner is lying in the tunnel with his bloodied leg on the track and the train approaching. (I wasn't very old!)

George Clooney is excellent in From Dusk Til Dawn.

I wasn't a big fan of the dry execution in Green Mile.

I grew up on Mortal Kombat so violence and gore doesn't often shock me too much (some of the scenes mentioned in this thread seem comically tame to me, no offence), but one scene that I find genuinely disturbing is the ending sequence of Mother (2017). Spoiler ahead. This is a mainstream film with a mainstream director (Darren Aronofsky), and a mainstream cast (Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Barden, Micelle Pfeiffer, Ed Harris). In the ending sequence, the infant baby of Jennifer Lawrence's character is snatched by a weird, cult-like possessed mob (don't ask), paraded over their heads as though being conveyed to some sacrificial ritual altar, its neck is broken in the process (it dies), the baby is cannibalised, then when fighting her way through the crowd to get to her baby, Jennifer Lawrence is brutally beaten, violently kicked and punched in the head numerous times, stomped in the abdomen, and in the process partially stripped, and it's clearly enhanced with CGI to make it seem more real. It's honestly horrible. I hated that film. The 'mainstreamness' of it didn't prepare me for that ending.

By the way the film is highly allegorical; nothing in it is to be taken as literal or real as such, but that doesn't stop it from being really disturbing on an immediate and superficial level.

I remember watching Threads as a young kid (to the point that I know who I was with and where, when we watched it) and it scared me - I’ve never watched it since but keep meaning to.

I suspect it probably looks very tame now but the whole premise that a nuclear attack could happen was frightening to a young lad.

I watched it a couple of months ago and it is still a very dark and disturbing view of the country after nuclear attack. The hopelessness is the overwhelming factor of this movie.

As a kid The Twilight Zone episode 'Terror at 20 000 feet' kept me away from the curtains for a very long time.
