Expecting a big Saints win. Sheff Wed have barely strengthened their squad.

The only thing that nags away at me is my gut feeling that Martin isn’t as good as Saints hope he is. He wasn’t universally popular at Swansea from what I read, but didn’t have the resources to be fair.

Brilliant strike.
Re: Sheff Weds v Saints
Looks like Southampton have taken a good following up there. Probably similar to us last season, desperate for a bit of excitement and some different away days.

Interesting how he hugged the manager.
Re: Sheff Weds v Saints
Made in Burnley. He was nothing until he came to us and our coaches got stuck into him.

That’ll be credited to Armstrong. Possibly takes it beyond the GK.

Just looks like a recent league 1 team vs a recent prem team.

I see it as a straight shootout between Leicester and Southampton for the title
Re: Sheff Weds v Saints
Southampton should be paying us £15 million for what we did to Tella. Transformed his career

They barely got over the line against 10 man Barnsley in the playoff final.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 8:27 pmThey don’t look much different to the dross we played last season.

They look terrible - definitely a relegation contender

The amount of yellows and reds this new level of discipline on kicking the ball away will provide is going to be fun.

Tough looking league is the Championship this season...we'd probably only win it this time by a few points.

Edozie, bought him from City last summer, real talent

Its interesting how the commenter compared Saints to us .We were exceptional with a great coach and very talented players.Saints still are not the finished article and the jury is still out on Russell Martin.

Re: Sheff Weds v Saints
This is hardly a contest - one team looks as though it might finish in a high position in the table, the other looks certain to be struggling at the bottom.
A bit like last year I suppose when we went to Huddersfield but I don't expect Southampton to do as well as we did.

Re: Sheff Weds v Saints
depends how many players they keep imho. No guarantee they lose any of this starting 11 and they have good options off the bench. Agree it's very hard to judge them tonight though as Sheff Weds look exactly what they were last season - bang average league one sideClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 9:05 pmThis is hardly a contest - one team looks as though it might finish in a high position in the table, the other looks certain to be struggling at the bottom.

Re: Sheff Weds v Saints
After Huddersfield we signed key players such as Benson, Tella, Zaroury & Beyer. All our departures had already gone but they'll lose players yet this window.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 9:08 pmdepends how many players they keep imho. Re: Sheff Weds v Saints
It’s interesting that for all the talk of needing to get players in early to get them bedded in during preseason, four of our most important players last year signed after the season had started.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 9:11 pmAfter Huddersfield we signed key players such as Benson, Tella, Zaroury & Beyer. Spotted Stuart Armstrong, Che Adams and Livia on the bench. The latter two have been heavily linked with leaving but it shows what quality they have.

Oh dear. They said first half Martin sides leak goals
Re: Sheff Weds v Saints
I think that’s a tad harsh - a bang average league 1 side doesn’t accrue as many points as they did last season.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 9:08 pmdepends how many players they keep imho. Loads of talent but a poor manager imo, that’s why they’re not a cert for me.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 9:19 pmOh dear. They said first half Martin sides leak goals
Re: Sheff Weds v Saints
Saints need a new centre back or two. Not a patch on the ones we had.

Soton are playing just like Swansea did last season with all the possession but very little end product which, of course, is no surprise.

Re: Sheff Weds v Saints
In fairness this time last season when we played Huddersfield we certainly weren't the finished article and could argue the jury was out on Kompany, obviously we then had a wonderful season but Southampton aren't to dissimilar to where we were at the start of last season.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 9:00 pmIts interesting how the commenter compared Saints to us .We were exceptional with a great coach and very talented players.Saints still are not the finished article and the jury is still out on Russell Martin.

Sheffield Wednesday have enough to stay up and still plenty of time to recruit players.
They don’t drop too many points at home

Re: Sheff Weds v Saints
Agreed. But there is a lot of dross in League 1 with the top 3 last season all amassing more than 90 points. This season’s League 1 looks even weaker and Stockport, Notts County and Wrexham would be challenging at the top end

The Hillsborough atmosphere will win them some points this season, loud when they are at it.

Re: Sheff Weds v Saints
It’s a great stadium Hillsborough. The fans there dragged them into the PO Final in that second leg.
Re: Sheff Weds v Saints
We went up a couple of gears in the second half but Southampton haven't done that, yet. They haven't given Tella anything to run on to either so he is being a bit stifled. I noticed that he was outside of the box at corners in the first half. Wasn't he in the middle for our corners?
