Today’s Blast from our recent Clarets Past (v) - Mitchell Thomas
A key cog in Stan’s promotion side of 1999/2000 and also the side that quietly worked its way to a seventh place finish in 2001. An inspired signing.

Loved the defence in that era of Thomas, Davis and Cox. You could tell Thomas had played a higher level.
Saying that, the first game that comes to mind for some reason is the 4-3 home game vs. Millwall. Out of sight and cruising to begging for the final whistle!
Didn’t appreciate how old (in football terms) he was when he joined which says a lot about his performances; brilliant signing.

He was superb for us. Key part of the promotion team and of course in helping Ian Wright join!

Good solid player and hard as nails. I think we were playing Fulham in the cup and Boa Morte left one on him, not long later when Boa Morte got the ball Big Mitch sorted him out good and proper, you could hear the Fulham player’s scream in the JHU. Instrumental in our promotion and decent Championship seasons.

Brilliant signing! He was a rock for us in the promotion season and brought experience and level headedness.
Sadly I can also recall his ageing legs being outclassed against Them Lot down the road in the awful drubbing.
Mitchell raised the level at Burnley in every respect and deserves the highest praise.

2001 I think, we played West Brom at home and as soon as they brought a peak Jason Roberts on, Stan put a by then veteran Thomas on to man mark him. Hardly gave him a kick.

Exactly my thoughts. How old was he when he signed? 35? An extremely impressive defender at that levelRumpelstiltskin wrote: ↑Sun Aug 06, 2023 2:32 pmImmaculate player for us.Thought he might be past it when Stan signed him but no way.Loved watching him.

Versatile and read the game so well.
Paul Cook and Mitchell were fantastic free signings.
