Do recall you could get 4 pints of Toby Light for a £1 in the Waterloo .

Re: When was your first served beer?
At 16, me and three mates discovered we could regularly get into a few Working Mens clubs where, Phoenix Nights style, they generally an old bloke on the door who took the money, asked if we were 18, signed us in and in we went.
The best Friday nights out we had at that age were at the club in Cotton Tree Lane in Colne when there'd be a comic on and er, exotic dancers. However "exotic" they were or not didn't really matter to us....
Football the following day either first team at home or, if not able to follow them away, the Mighty Central League.
Cant remember the price of a pint then but my first pint at college in Bradford was 11p.

Not me, Biddy was a teacher for the gamma stream so us proper clever lads never had him. I'm certain I would have been a frequent target for one of his blackboard duster missiles though.

Ah the shepherd first pint in the UK after 3 years in the US. Think it was Yorkshire tetleys which was better than Lancashire tetleys.durhamclaret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 09, 2023 6:34 pmBlack Horse Skipton aged about 15, closely followed by The Ship and the Royal Shepherd.

I miss the Bramsche! Enjoyed the balcony bit at the back overlooking the canal.
It's a coffee shop type thing now (of course).

I can honestly say ive never bought a beer in a pub in my life. I don't drink and the first time I went in a pub I was in my late 20s. Drinking never interested me in the slightest, I always think people who drink pint after pint must be very thirsty

Used to be superb, absolutely loved it.
For a tenner you could get 4 pints and about 4 games of pool with the change.
Christ I sound old.

Re: When was your first served beer?
Its actually frightening over a lifetime how much we spend on the booze. I do love a good pint but its bloody extortionate to go out these days. We compete so much more now on our leisure time with many sources outside of the pub.Venkys4eva wrote: ↑Fri Aug 11, 2023 3:34 pmI can honestly say ive never bought a beer in a pub in my life. Friend of a friend is a non-drinker, still comes out with us and stays for a few hours, on a water or a coke, occasionally gives us a lift back. Bought her house a few years ago, no kids, mid-high income, doesn't drink or have lavish lifestyle and has paid if off already in her mid 30's.

1977 I played on a team in 16 and under league sponsored by the White Heart pub in Mottram, landlord would serve us and tell us to sit in a corner of the pub and try and be quiet.

The Royale in Waterfoot... It was non uniform day from school.... Me and a mate decided to chance it at lunchtime. Aged 15 we walked in confidently and ordered 2 pints of bitter.... Took us 45 mins to drink up..... We were both nodding off in afternoon lessons and the teachers wanted to know why.

Drinking Murphy's in the Falcon (Hammerton St)? Aged 15/16 with some school mates. I looked about 12 and had just taken school tie and blazer off. I think the bar staff knew...
Weirdly, I never went back to that pub again and don't think I've had Murphy's since.

The Fountain in Todmorden. I would have been 16. I'm not saying I was hooked but by the time I was 17 I was playing in local pool and darts leagues and spending most evenings in the pubs around Todmorden.

Re: When was your first served beer?
Will have been early 2000's when we went up there. My best mate was the sous chef up there so there was a group of us that went up at weekends and sat in the corner with a pint each. Was always good when they had a function on though.pureclaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 9:14 amI had a school friend when I was at rosehill junior then Towneley high school whose Dad was the landlord through 60s and 70s so went in lots never bought a drink there but do remeber getting the odd small glass of beer.

Re: When was your first served beer?
Age 15 in the Gretna after playing football on Cherry Fold. Ran 2 miles home, feeling I'd drunk some rocket fuel.
Re: When was your first served beer?
I've only been in The Fountain once along with 5 biker mates, it was in the mid 70s when it was the haunt of the local coppers, it was like the scene in American Werewolf where the lads enter the Slaughtered Lamb and everyone stops what they are doing and stares at them.

Re: When was your first served beer?
1st Sept 2001.
I remember it because I'd been talked into going out with my Saturday team Craven Heifer in Rawtenstall after a solid win, which were pretty rare. England beat Germany 5-1 and joined a few of the lads for a meal at Beau Binis on Bank Street after. These lads have now become my best mates.
It was a John Smiths, as my dad drank it and I though it was normal......
Probably my only ever pint of John Smiths!!!

Re: When was your first served beer?
I'm talking mid 90's so I suspect it was a little different by then!! It was a really friendly pub run by lovely couple. Sadly the landlord was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in the late 90's though. It stayed open for a couple more years before being sold onto developers and is now a house (as are so many in Todmorden now). I remember doing a 24 hour "pool-a-thon" with the rest of the pool team to raise money for cancer research. I can confirm that once you get into hour 17 of playing killer it stops being funcbx750 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 11:55 amI've only been in The Fountain once along with 5 biker mates, it was in the mid 70s when it was the haunt of the local coppers, it was like the scene in American Werewolf where the lads enter the Slaughtered Lamb and everyone stops what they are doing and stares at them.

Re: When was your first served beer?
Aged 13 Bull Hotel Nelson. Trophy Bitter 14p per pint.. me and my mates used to be regulars......
Now a seasoned drinker...I remember having a few pints in there with my dad and older brother as he was getting married the following week. That said it would have been 4 weeks after my 14th birthday. My dad drove me and my mate home and he was sick on the back seat just as we pulled up...."I'm sorry Mr Flynn"........I'll never forget those words.

It'd have been Arthur I reckon..the world's most laid-back landlord.. Or happen Colin Lloyd?
.. .. Don't recall Jack serving me, but his lass Pat often did in next year or two.. Super lass, no idea what happened to her...or Graham, he was a good lad too.

I know it was Masseys pale ale but cant think where. The Brickies in grandma's time was a regular venue early in my career.
