**** weak as ever. Good to see the standard has been lowered whilst we've been away.

Re: RATE THE REF - Craig Pawson v Manchester City
Won't score as watched it on TV but thought he was alright overall. The sending off whilst unfortunate was probably the right decision really and tbf he did go yellow to start. The "penalty" in the 1st was also definitely not a penalty.
He made a mistake with the one where Their full back tripped himself up but other than that I think he got most things correct overall.

Re: RATE THE REF - Craig Pawson v Manchester City
I thought he reffed the game well but both teams played fair so an easy game or did he just reff it well.
My opinion on the sending off is the reff got it right first time with the yellow. He caught his foot and was going for the ball. Last year tackles were lying in left right and centre for and against and that tackle may not have seen a yellow in most of last seasons first half’s we so.
Very poor decision and spoilt a good game. Weak decision have some back bone for goodness sake stop being nodding dogs.

You’ll see a tackle like that at some point over the weekend, you can bet they won’t see red. It’s the inconsistency that boils my blood.

Pawson was, is and always will be a weak referee.
Come back Mike Dean, all is forgiven.

He didn't have much to do. Thought we would be more cynical in our defending generally so should have been an easy game. They kicked the ball away and nothing. Played on advantage from a clearance after an offside. Allowed a longish gap in play. Missed shoves in the back on our attackers when committed to aerial challenges especially first half. It was a yellow and not a red.

Re: RATE THE REF - Craig Pawson v Manchester City
The simplest question with the red card is, if that’s Walker catching Zaroury does Oliver call it back? The answer is obviously no he doesn’t, so it’s never a red card.

he certainly didn't catch his foot, you might want to re-watch it, 100% red card and lucky for Walker he didn't pick up a bad injuryLew200100 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 12, 2023 12:03 amI thought he reffed the game well but both teams played fair so an easy game or did he just reff it well.

Which part of his foot did he catch ?

Re: RATE THE REF - Craig Pawson v Manchester City
Agreed. So overall we must be happy with that and all this 'he was weak' etc. is nonsense.
It was clearly dangerous play (it was dreadful although I know it was just over enthusiasm on Zaroury's part) and it was absolutely correct to use VAR to get to the right decision. It didn't spoil the game for me because it was near the end of what was an awful match anyway and I couldn't wait for it to end!).Lew200100 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 12, 2023 12:03 amMy opinion on the sending off is the reff got it right first time with the yellow. My one criticism was the push by Koleosho on Lewis. It was stupid and unnecessary and he should have got a yellow for it.

I suppose you could say Pawson got the one big decision wrong by only issuing Zaroury with a yellow, it's a clear red, but generally no real issues.

Re: RATE THE REF - Craig Pawson v Manchester City
Lol. It was a typical PL referee's performance which we'll unfortunately have to get used to again, obvious bias towards the rich clubs, concious or otherwise. Minor stuff like letting City take set pieces wherever they wanted but making sure we were on the exact spot; falling for them throwing themselves to the ground in the opposite direction to which they were travelling, (alvarez particularly good at that); and the real highlight, playing on with City in possession whilst the linesman flags for an offside against them.
Weak is changing his decision on Zaroury, which he got spot on first time, on the advice of some guy in a bunker watching a screen with no understanding or feel for the game at the stadium. VAR is an absolute blight on the sport which undermines referee's and unfortunately they're too weak to stand up to it.
We still have a real problem in this country with referee's because whilst they might know the laws to the letter, they don't have any understanding of the game itself. Standards are so low its untrue and they show no signs of getting any better.
Obvs didn't affect the result but one day it will.

The carrying on when we'd hoofed the ball back to them was odd and he was absolutely fastidious about where we took free kicks from but very lassez-faire about them.

No. I think that in real time and from his position he couldn't really be sure that it was a clear red, so the yellow was correct at the time.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Aug 12, 2023 10:11 amI suppose you could say Pawson got the one big decision wrong by only issuing Zaroury with a yellow, it's a clear red, but generally no real issues.
On rveview, the red card was correct: but, I guess the only question is: was it a CLEAR and OBVIOUS error, which is what Michael Oliver is supposed to be adjudicating on.
Re: RATE THE REF - Craig Pawson v Manchester City
From 1 angle it looked red. Others looked barely a foul. Certainly no intent and not malicious and no injury caused despite Walkers antics. So yellow for me unlike the Martinez rugby tackle which I have just watched in the Newcastle game. Beginning to hate the PL again. Overall I thought Pawson was weak and biased

Re: RATE THE REF - Craig Pawson v Manchester City
Don’t think it has to be clear and obvious does it for a potential red card? We weren’t sure whether it was even a foul but there is absolutely no doubt that it’s a red card.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Sat Aug 12, 2023 5:56 pmNo. I think that in real time and from his position he couldn't really be sure that it was a clear red, so the yellow was correct at the time.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Bernardo’s push on Al Dakhil which was about as clear a penalty as you’ll see.

Re: RATE THE REF - Craig Pawson v Manchester City
That’s where I think VAR is terrible though. Generally with a bad challenge you get a feel from the crowd reaction, the players reaction etc. There was nothing in the Zaroury that made anyone in the ground think it’s a red card yet a slowed down replay etc etc it becomes a red. It’s nonsense.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Aug 12, 2023 8:40 pmDon’t think it has to be clear and obvious does it for a potential red card? Had Oliver not sent him to heck it would not have got a further mention.
Also I repeat what I said last night. If that is Walker on Zaroury Oliver 100% goes with the yellow.

Re: RATE THE REF - Craig Pawson v Manchester City
When you see someone on the floor rubbing his shin pad like that, you know he was within a toucher of an amputation. Though strangely enough, it wasn't the shin pad that was touched. If Walker had forgotten where he was supposed to hurt before the card was even shown, then would I be unduly suspicious to think he wasn't hurt at all?Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 12, 2023 3:51 amhe certainly didn't catch his foot, you might want to re-watch it, 100% red card and lucky for Walker he didn't pick up a bad injury

It’s quite ironic that we had a reputation for being a dirty team under Dyche despite receiving only a couple of red cards during our whole time in the PL under him (if memory serves), and our first game in the PL playing this ‘total football’ under VK we have a man sent off.

amazing how you reckon to have watched it close enough to see which part of his leg he was rubbing but somehow missed the camera angle from behind that shows his leg bend.dsr wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 12:05 amWhen you see someone on the floor rubbing his shin pad like that, you know he was within a toucher of an amputation. I thought it was noticeable against City that we committed far less of those 'professional' fouls to stop counter attacks, the ones that Cork got booked for every game last seasonRileybobs wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 12:13 amIt’s quite ironic that we had a reputation for being a dirty team under Dyche despite receiving only a couple of red cards during our whole time in the PL under him (if memory serves), and our first game in the PL playing this ‘total football’ under VK we have a man sent off.

Yes we did to be fair. I love Cork but the fact he had to make those fouls at Championship level suggests to me that he’d struggle with the pace of this league now and would be ineffective due to picking up bookings early in games. In the friendly with Benfica he could have seen red in the first half with a culmination of tactical fouls.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 12:36 amI thought it was noticeable against City that we committed far less of those 'professional' fouls to stop counter attacks, the ones that Cork got booked for every game last season

I missed this. But both BBC and Sky have confirmed it
I think this also means that City used 4 substitution windows
Kovacic 23
Lapworth, Gvardiol 79
Palmer 80
McAtee 90+5
I thought the maximum allowed was 3

That’s a good point. It’s still three windows plus half time.
Edit - actually the report I just read was from last season so it may have changed.

My only thoughts are :
79&80 was the same break in play, but I thought they made these separately
You get an extra window if a player is injured as a result of a red card challenge

In real time, I wasn’t even sure it was a foul by Zaroury but watching it back, it’s 100% a red card offence.
We should’ve had a penalty as well.
