I did look, but couldn't see another thread.
Morecambe beat Bradford City 3-0, with Michael scoring two and an assist for the other.

Played against teams I was managing. We were always useful but he was amazing. Used to get put in nets and only allowed out for five minutes when he would destroy us before being put back in the nets. We had quite a few games in and around south Manchester and there was nothing as good as him. Seemed a nice kid, hope he makes it with us.

From watching the very brief highlights on youtube it's interesting that he was on freekicks and penalties. One goal was a very good free kick, one was a penalty. That's the sort of responsibility that they gave to Adam Phillips and he thrived on it. Good to see him off the mark as I think he would have been frustrated that his loan spell there last season didn't go as planned.

Last night Morecambe played Liverpool U21s in the EFL Trophy. The commentators didn't stop talking about Michael Mellon. He missed a hat full of chances and got Morecambe's man of the match award despite them losing 3-0. The big topic of discussion was who will replace Mellon for the two games where he'll be suspended. It seems that he's clearly their number one striker as well as being their top scorer.
The only area of real concern is his discipline, he got a second yellow on Saturday for leaving a foot in got a stupid yellow last night for barging into the keeper when he'd clearly caught the ball seconds earlier and Mellon had time to stop his run or avoid him.
5 goals in 9 games so far could well see him on double figures before Christmas if he keeps up his form.
Good to see the lad doing well, we've had a lot of players go out on loan and not pull up any trees but Mellon is starting to look like the sort of players that other teams will be starting to notice of, a bit like Adam Phillips when he was there.

Re: Michael Mellon
He's got a one match ban for two yellow cards and as for the second yellow at Gillingham, he didn't leave any foot in, he was shooting and the defender came across him. Nonsense of a card for me.dibraidio wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 2:17 pmLast night Morecambe played Liverpool U21s in the EFL Trophy. The commentators didn't stop talking about Michael Mellon. Last night's yellow counts for nothing but he's only now got one recorded in the league towards the five.

Re: Michael Mellon
His dad could pick up the odd yellow.
Re: Michael Mellon
You're right it is just the one, the commentator said it was two for some reason. After the match Derek Adams said if Mellon had scored 5 or 6 no one would have been able to complain. Mellon was getting in the right positions and he was gutted that none of them went in. Adams was pleased that he's making the chances and has no doubt that the goals will come.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 3:59 pmHe's got a one match ban for two yellow cards and as for the second yellow at Gillingham, he didn't leave any foot in, he was shooting and the defender came across him. His goal is at 28 seconds and his second booking is at 1:49 in these highlights.

Re: Michael Mellon
Sad thing is, much the same as Worrel on Foster, he was being shoved and his shirt pulled and probably would have got a penalty if he fell and rolled over like a baby.
Instead, Mellon was honest, kept on his feet and was completely unaware of the defenders challenge so he accidentally followed through.
Refs need to get on top of the shirt pulling and holding that goes on. It's not normal and shouldn't just be part of the game.

Michael Mellon
Scored again yesterday for Morecambe, taking his tally for the season to 6 goals in 9 games.
Still only 19 and he is playing in League 2. But you never know he could be a late bloomer. Usually if your good enough though your playing in the first team at 19. Rooney Owen Foden etc.

Re: Michael Mellon
I think it's important to look at our own context and that of clubs like Liverpool and City.
Their Academy budgets will be enormous at clubs like that.
We also know our youth system more or less collapsed ten, twelve years ago.
I stand to be corrected but my reckoning, Michael Mellon has the best stats for a striker we've loaned out to a League club for years. Yes, it's L2. But still. It's progress and welcome progress.
If he proved to be ultimately, say, a good striker in L1 within two, three years it would represent great strides by our Academy.
Just my humble opinion.

Re: Michael Mellon
Well done, Michael. I've said it above, but this lad is our first young striker to step up to professional level, yes in L2, and score goals regularly.
His progress is excellent and very important for our Academy.

Yes I do and they both use the same nickname
The original Wimbledon left Plough Lane and ground shared with Palace and then moved from London to Milton Keynes as a new club MK Dons
AFC Wimbledon became a new club in Wimbledon around 2000 and about 4 years ago they returned to Plough Lane but to a new ground not the original which was near the new ground.
Enlighten me with any additional aspects I have missed

Re: Michael Mellon
just watched the highlights, what is the average age of that Morecambe team ? Looked like an under 18 team !!!!
Re: Michael Mellon
I happened to be at that game yesterday.
Morecambe battered AFC and Mellon was without doubt a standout player and had a huge impact on the game.
Heard that this wasn’t a one off, that he’s consistently been doing it all season. There’s a feeling at Morecambe that he’ll be a star in the next few seasons.
Leave him where he is, he’s already there and scoring, let him develop. But, I too feel Jay Rod is and has been way over the hill for a few seasons now and it’s only sentiment that is keeping him at the club.
No doubt you’ll disagree, and so I’ll see you all in a month

Re: Michael Mellon
we've lost a few games and aren't playing well, judging by the over reaction from some I'm assuming if we lose next week we automatically get relegated to League 2 and thus Mellon will be a valuable player for us !
