Re: Tragedy Chanting
I attend a lot of German football matches.
The fans in Germany support their own club almost non-stop for 90 minutes and virtually ignore the opposition. As it should be.
We need a club song. I used to dislike 'I'm Gonna Be' but at least it gets people singing together and it might be time to resurrect it.
SC Freiburg has the Badnerlied (a song about the area of Baden, similar but much better than 'She's a Lassie from Lancashire') plus their own club song 'SC Freiburg vor'
Both are sung before every game by just about everyone in the stadium.

We need a Venkys song without any reference to Fat Jack
Re: Tragedy Chanting
This is really noticeable when you go to German football matches. It's non-stop, irrespective of the opposition or of what's happening on the pitch. Often, the only time there's an atmosphere on the Turf is if the ref's a bit crap. We absolutely do need a club song. As an example, Mull of Kintyre for Forest at the City Ground sounds epic.MT03ALG wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 11:55 amI attend a lot of German football matches.

Re: Tragedy Chanting
If you are so weak and easily offended that you cry over any chanting then you probably shouldn‘t be going football games.
If you want a sport where all supporters holds hands and sings christian hymns then football isn‘t it and I hope it never becomes that.

This points me to one of the problems with this whole thing Liverpool fans will quite rightly get hugely offended if you sing about Hillsborough but them same fans will go and sing songs about the Munich air disaster and can’t see the issue! Re: Tragedy Chanting
It's not about Liverpool although Sky probably didn't help with three of the four guests having affiliations with that club. One of them, Joe Blott, who is a terrific bloke I can tell you, is representing the FSA on this. Was it Joe who said it's even happening at QPR with Grenfell? Clubs are victims now if there has been anything that fans can jump on, Leeds with the two fans in Istanbul, Liverpool and Manchester United too for the obvious reasons given, QPR and even Cardiff for the Emiliano Sala death. And there will be more.JarrowClaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 2:06 pmThis points me to one of the problems with this whole thing Liverpool fans will quite rightly get hugely offended if you sing about Hillsborough but them same fans will go and sing songs about the Munich air disaster and can’t see the issue! The woman who lost her dad at Hillsborough touched a nerve with me, more so because of the date. It's 34 years ago today since my dad passed away. It wasn't a tragic event, it was the end of a long illness, but I can just imagine how I'd feel today if people close by were chanting about his death.
Basically, whoever it is, whatever it is, it's disgusting and well done to Joe and the FSA team who are trying to do something about it. And well done to Sky for at least highlighting it.

Re: Tragedy Chanting
If people think tragedy chanting is appropriate, send me the details of the loved ones you recently lost, whether it be a parent, sibling, or friend who committed suicide. Just post some details about them along with your name, and I'll devise a humorous poem or something in bad taste about them being still dead directed at you.
It's just a footy forum. You shouldn't be reading it if you're too weak to handle it.

Yes it does occur to me that they may not be the same ones SOME of them will be though and the fan base haven’t done anything to stop it either but the same can be said for United it is awful whoever sings them. To be honest it was just an example but used Liverpool as they were mentioned in the post I quoted All teams do similar though.

Agreed I was using Liverpool as an example as they were mentioned in the message I quoted the same can be said for any team that sings these type of songs it is abhorrent and serves no purpose.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 2:16 pmIt's not about Liverpool although Sky probably didn't help with three of the four guests having affiliations with that club. Re: Tragedy Chanting
Slightly off topic but when I was 10 I had two teeth out and was anaesthetised using the gas they used back then.
When I woke up, I was singing this song at the top of my voice. My mum was mortified.
On the subject to tragedy chanting, sadly, they are all are responsible as each other especially Liverpool and United fans.

Did you watch the linked video? They literally said that they didn’t want to lose the passion from football.RickyBobby wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 1:33 pmIf you are so weak and easily offended that you cry over any chanting then you probably shouldn‘t be going football games.

By your logic, it’s not possible to be passionate without being grossly offensive to a group of people, which quite simply, is not the case.
Mentioned further up the thread, but some songs that become synonymous with Burnley (Jimmy Mac, Dirty Old Town etc.) might be a great start to improving our own atmosphere and getting rid of the Jack Walker and T*ts and F*nny songs.

Re: Tragedy Chanting
It takes a really deliberate kind of ignorance to see this as a situation where there are two sides which are as bad as each other. The two sides of this are the people at whichever club who sing these songs and the people (like the particularly admirable ones in the video) who want them to stop. The Hillsborough families or the Leeds fan shown in the video are not and cannot be held responsible for their fellow supporters engaging in this behaviour.
Glad we're starting to see more on this, the video linked is really good and the new guidance for prosecuting people who do this are really good. If we can see the more famous cases of this wiped out or at least lessened by criminal action and by raising awareness then great. And perhaps as Ian rightly says we can stop mocking the death of Jack Walker.

Re: Tragedy Chanting
This isn't about tragedy chanting but more along the lines of how good it can be without it but I thought the Man City fans were pretty good at our place. At one point in the second half the Turf went silent as people tried to listen to the words of one of their songs and i dont remember hearing the usual **** hole chants. They're not perfect of course (one of their fans was on the pitch celebrating with Haaland on Sunday) and its probably easier to support the team when you win everything but it seemed like a good example to me.

Thought it was generally because of the media darlings and perennial victims Liverpool and Man Utd? Always found the Jack Walker song odd, pointless and embarrassing ,thankfully only the CFS ever sing it as it never gets “round the ground “
I find it hard to believe that Liverpool still sing about Munich as surely VERY VERY few fans would sing about Hillsborough would they ?? I can think of only Leeds fans that would sing about Munich as such .

Point deductions or close the stand where they singing starts from for 2 games that would stop it, given that there is so much security cameras with recording of sound as well as pictures and that at most home grounds you need a number or ticket for your seat ease to call these idiots out

If I'd had a relative died at Hillsborough, and heard such chanting, I actually wouldn't be offended. It wouldn't open up old wounds and take me back to that awful day. Because I know that humanity in the main is empathic. Those same people who sing such chants would probably remove their caps if a funeral cortege passes by in everyday life. If they met someone affected by Hillsborough they'd show compassion. People behave differently in a crowd. They say/chant things that aren't to be taken literally. I think you all know that really. It's just drunken idiots singing a stupid song. The media are instructing you to be outraged at stuff like this to help them sanitize their 'product'.

Re: Tragedy Chanting
Yes, seriously. I could never be offended by a stupid chant at a football match. I know it doesn't really mean anything. I know its not personal. The people chanting know this. Most people know this. It's similar to listening to a near to the bone comedian whose main repertoire is to shock and repulse. People laugh because they know its just sick humour, and it doesn't really mean anything. I would never sing such chants myself btw. Im at an age where I find them immature and distasteful. I just think there are more pressing issues in the world than silly football chants.
Re: Tragedy Chanting
Women's football showing the way that football can enjoyed without the necessity to have any suggestion of 'tragedy chanting.' How can football ever be a family occasion when this type of conduct is being pursued? One of the images that sticks in my mind with women#s football is how very young children are drawn it an derive great excitement from it.
They own it and show their appreciation and love of it. Let's not kill it.

Regardless of which team you support you have to be a grade A bellend to go to a football match and sing about someone dying or being dead.
All those taking part wouldn't be missed if clubs banned them. Be that Munich, Hillsborough, the Leeds fans in Turkey, the dumb Jack Walker song or any thing similar. It is n't that long since we have goons who couldn't be quiet for 1 minute for the queen and hid behind the "Not my queen" or I am republican which I think translates to I am allowed to be disrespectful. There is a thing about all these types who take part in this called safety in numbers. The vast majority of decent folk recognise them for the pond life they are hopefully clubs start to.

I think the worst example of tragedy chanting I can remember was during the early '70s, Cardiff versus Man U: Munich! Aberfan!
