Roy Keane

Post by bfcjg » Mon Sep 04, 2023 9:56 am

Allegedly attacked at the Emirates yesterday. Disgraceful if true. However if for example it happened at Burnley would more be made of it and as it's the current media darlings Arsenal it is played down. Also some frothing at the mouth pundits would go into overdrive.

Agree, if it had been at Burnley it would be all over the internet news sites, on the front page of the BBC website and probably trending across Twitter.

As it happened at media darlings Arsenal you can only find it all over the internet news sites, on the front page of the BBC website and trending across Twitter.

No arrests as of yet and the video they keep mentioning is just Micah Richards having someone up against a wall holding his collar like he's about the beat him. I assume this was the aftermath of the reported headbutt

Never even knew this had happened until now.

Good to see an arrest has been made.

There’s no question though we get jumped on by the media compared to other clubs/fans.

Go on twitter or X as it is now, the massive overreaction from fans stating we are knuckle daggers etc, there was even Plymouth fans harping on about a minor incident over 30 years ago.

There's a reason I avoid Twitter like the plague, but our resident police officer mentioned the media, not other clubs' fans trying to score cheap points.

Arrest made after Arsenal fan allegedly headbutts Roy Keane
Former Ireland midfielder was working as Sky Sports pundit at Emirates Stadium for Arsenal vs Manchester United

Martyn Ziegler, Chief Sports Reporter, Monday September 04 2023, 2.50pm, The Times

Police have arrested a 42-year-old man on suspicion of assault after Roy Keane was allegedly headbutted during Arsenal’s victory over Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Keane was confronted in the stadium’s West Stand as he waited for a lift down to pitch level and his fellow Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards was seen restraining a man in a video posted on social media.

The pair continued their broadcasting duties after the incident, which happened just after United’s Alejandro Garnacho had an 88th-minute goal ruled out for offside.

A report in the Daily Mail said that the man allegedly aimed a headbutt at Keane and hit the former Ireland international on the chest and chin, but the 52-year-old brushed off any effect of the impact.

A Sky Sports spokeswoman said: “We understand the police are investigating an alleged assault by a member of the public immediately preceding the footage circulating on social media. In the footage seen, Micah Richards was acting to defuse a situation.”

he Metropolitan Police confirmed that an investigation had been launched, saying in a statement: “Police are investigating following an assault that is alleged to have occurred at the Emirates Stadium during an Arsenal v Manchester United match on Sunday, September 3.” It later confirmed that an arrest has been made.

Keane had a tempestuous relationship with Arsenal during his playing days, often clashing with his rival captain Patrick Vieira.

Garnacho’s goal would have given United a 2-1 lead if it had not been ruled out, but Arsenal scored two goals in stoppage time to clinch a 3-1 win.

An Arsenal spokesman said: “We are aware of an incident that took place during our match against Manchester United on Sunday. The Metropolitan Police are conducting an investigation into the matter and we are fully co-operating with their enquiries.”

As it’s the perma darlings of London football , this will quickly disappear and be classed for what it is ,a lone idiotic ( probs p1ssed up) fan .

Though a mere pop bottle induced the Athletic no less ,to put out a ludicrous story of “ bricked “ coaches, motorway bridges and “ extensive damage “ . The Twitter cesspit was in absolute “Burnley inbred “ hysteria .

Certainly did.
Quite justified bearing in mind the cowardly thug, also a brilliant player, was quite happy to revel in the role of hard man.
A different set of rules apply off the field, of course, but even so you'd expect someone attacked, allegedly, attempt to defend himself.
Fair play for his restraint - if that's what it was....

Potentially preserving his job status was probably at the fore, I don't think it would have gone down to well with his employers having a brawl irrespective of who started it.

This is a man who was daft enough start a fight with Peter Schmeical, so I don't think he's a coward. But it's a daft thing to say anyway, he's a grown man. Why would he get into a fight with some random thug.

I'm sure Roy would have managed to handle himself had it escalated, he's certainly got the character to be able to do that. It is a testament to him that he was restrained, and that reflects my experience with "proper" hard men in life - they know they dont need to respond and are restrained and more often than not they can diffuse situations without any blows because they are "hard" and whoever is confronting them do have a quick "f#ck about and find out" realisation before it escalates too. Just my experience of course.

Just an observation - fans who weren’t present at the Villa bus incident are forensically certain as to what happened.
Fans who weren’t present at the Roy Keane incident are equally clear on the details.
What must it be like to have such unfettered certainty!

So you expected him to defend himself and pan the shite out of a bloke who had been immediately pinned against a wall and rendered defenseless by Micah Richards? That would be more the actions of a coward not a hardman, something you would have done maybe?

I expected him to defend himself.
It looks as though his big mate stepped in anyway.
I reckon most people wouldn't accept being nutted for no reason.
Whether their, or my, response would be as dramatic as you make out is debatable.
For what it's worth, I'm neither a coward nor a hard man. Hope that helps.

What exactly should he have done then Eddie? Given Richards apparently had the bloke pinned to a wall in fairly short order. I'd be happy my mate stepped in to diffuse things.

The story doing the rounds is that the guy went to headbutt Keane and managed to land one on his shoulder then within 2-3 seconds Richards had hold of him. Not sure what Keane should have done in the split second someone has unsuspectedly done this. Should he have punched him a few times ?

You can imagine the comments aimed at Keane had he swung a few punches at someone pinned to a wall.

If the big lad did step in before Keane could retaliate then fair dos.
Bit harsh pressing charges on a shoulder butt but if you can t act in self defence, nail the pillock in court.

“Rendered defenceless by Micah Richards” 😂 .The shame alone should be enough punishment for the bloke .

While Keane made no attempt whatsoever to throw any punches at his attacker ( prone or otherwise ) he’d have been fully justified in responding with reasonable /appropriate force .
