Matt Williams on the transfer window
Matt Williams on the transfer window
Brilliant interview with Radio Lancs on Saturday just been published:
https://x.com/bbclancssport/status/1698 ... 96347?s=46
Quite interesting to see what goes on, stuff with Maatsen, what delayed the Tresor deal etc.

Was interesting until he reeled off ludicrous statements like “Vincent is the best thing to happen to Burnley in the history of the club”

The truth when you listen to people involved is always very different to how things pan out on football manager.

Re: Matt Williams on the transfer window
He does say on there that agents are throwing free agents names to the club, which is interesting. But he does also swerve the question at the end about the left back position
Re: Matt Williams on the transfer window
Sounds like a free agent is being actively considered from that, then again i do get the impression MW may be wanting to engage and keep folk onside so may have given false hope. I suspect we shouldn't read too much in to that
Seems a decent chap though and trying to bring some transparency which has been missing before
Does allude to a bit of ongoing commercial naievity on our part in some of his comments but clearly better now at it than we recently were!

He's made Tresor out to be a bit of a useless chump too. Hope his footballing skills outperform his travel planning ones!

So maatsen wanted to come earlier in the window but Chelsea wouldn't let him, and by the time that they would let him, he didn't want to come.

Good interview and very inciteful. I'm impressed that people at the club are coming out and doing these types of interviews recently. Really opening up the communication routes rather than learning things from journalists who always put their own spin on things.
Of course some people always find ways to bash the club though.

He references Kompany talking to players before deals have been agreed, and this seems to be happening all over now. When did 'tapping up' stop being a thing?

Re: Matt Williams on the transfer window
Not listened to the interview yet, but this is exactly what I thought had happened. And to be fair to the club, we were obviously looking at other options, such as Hartman, when Chelsea initially said no. Poch obviously gave Maatsen more encouragement he'd see more first team minutes which appears to have changed his mind latter part of the window. Perhaps we should have foreseen this, but I just think it was unfortunate more than anything.claretandy wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 1:06 pmSo maatsen wanted to come earlier in the window but Chelsea wouldn't let him, and by the time that they would let him, he didn't want to come.

Re: Matt Williams on the transfer window
Massively impressed by Matt whenever I hear him speak. So knowledgeable and clearly a massive cog in our operation. He’ll be massive shoes to fill if he ever leaves, for sure.
Also massive judos to the club for organising this interview. It was clearly designed to head off some of the missplaced criticism about the window and achieves that perfectly.
I’d love to hear more from Matt generally but especially during transfer windows? Maybe regular interviews with him on how it’s going, challenges, regulations, etc.

Re: Matt Williams on the transfer window
I thought the bit on Tresor was interesting, he suggested the player hadn’t u-turned on joining us at all (which is what the media had us believe) and in fact did everything he could to get here for the medical, despite missing the flight. Also how earlier in the window we were keen but Genk asked for a much higher fee than the one we ended up paying.

Matt is suddenly becoming a front man at the club - his appearances on Mission, then co-commentator last Saturday and now Radio Lancs interviews. I won't polish his ego too much but I'd say that Burnley FC are very fortunate to have him at our club.

Once the official 25 man squad is announced they will give us an idea if there’s potentially a free agent in the thinking, if there’s squad place then every chanceBobSykes wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 12:56 pmSounds like a free agent is being actively considered from that, then again i do get the impression MW may be wanting to engage and keep folk onside so may have given false hope. Re: Matt Williams on the transfer window
It does seem slightly strange that we waited till deadline day to see if Chelsea changed their mind on Maatsen without seeing if Maatsen was still keen on the move, the model for every other position seems to if player A doesn’t become available we then move on, for example al-dakhil last summer which turn resulted in Beyer

Reading between the lines, we were confident Chelsea would change their minds. And they did when the Cucurella deal fell through.123EasyasBFC wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 2:26 pmIt does seem slightly strange that we waited till deadline day to see if Chelsea changed their mind on Maatsen without seeing if Maatsen was still keen on the move, the model for every other position seems to if player A doesn’t become available we then move on, for example al-dakhil last summer which turn resulted in Beyer
I find it strange that Maatsen would want to stay in a team that were willing to sell him, but maybe it all just came too late when he was settled and focussed on what he was doing?
Can tell from Matt’s interview that we tried for other targets and that they either fell through, were too expensive, etc. I don’t think we should go for anyone just because they’re available, they have to be right.

Re: Matt Williams on the transfer window
Really good to see openness from the club and club staff such as this. It's great for the fans and I'll bet it makes it harder for agents/players to mess us around going forward when our approach is so transparent. Heard a couple of times now about us backing out of deals where agents ask too much etc.
Matt Williams seems a real asset and should be very happy with what he and the team have done in the market since last summer. Sounds like we were a bit unfortunate with the LB situation but certainly not for want of trying to sort it out. The fact that a lot of us are getting hung up on not filling one specific position maybe shows how good we've actually had it. It's not that long ago that we needed to strengthen pretty much all over the pitch and seemingly couldn't strengthen anywhere.
Interested to see if something comes of these free agents but I think we'll have enough about us with the signings we've made to kick on until January when we can strengthen again.

Re: Matt Williams on the transfer window
Yairo Moreno played for Columbia and is still in his 20s. I know nothing about him beyond that. Left back pickings are slim.
Not much better on the CM front, although I see Gbamin is a free agent. Had a poor spell at Everton, but he’s a big-ish CDM and appears to have had a decent career pre-Goodison. Everton paid £25m for him.

Re: Matt Williams on the transfer window
Really good interview! Great insight. Right at the very end I felt myself go "Eeek" a little bit. The assumption that some of these lads with treble and quadruple in value is a tad dangerous when you spend 100+ million and several young players vying for similar positions. But in the main it is the the model we all wanted, and realistically the only one that allows us to compete moving forward.

I'm certainly not knocking either the interview or the concept, but bear in mind that these things aren't 'spin-free' either, just that it's spun to suit the club's agenda rather than that of someone else.

Re: Matt Williams on the transfer window
Matt does seem impressive whenever he talks, to be honest anyone in a senior role like that should, we sometimes get used to low standards. But we are lucky to have him, no doubt.
Three things spring to mind from that BBC interview:
1. What a shambles Chelsea are. If they don’t want him by the end, tell him, but there seemed no consensus. It sounds like the Matt equivalent wanted or needed the sale but Poch kept on the fence. If Poch had rang Maatsen and said “sorry, you’re not in my plans” he would have left. I’m not convinced Poch does want him as any more than a utility player upfield for a few minutes if there are injuries in the squad. Then there is the new contract situation, has he signed one? He isn’t on big wages now, surely he would have to sign a new deal to stay? Despite what Matt said, the rumour that it fell down on personal terms cannot be discounted. It doesn’t fully add up. Instinct - the player has dropped a clanger, terrible career decision, but we will see.
2. It sounds like Kompany taps up players all the time. It was worded as though Kompany persuades the player before the clubs negotiate.
3. This “best thing ever” is just hyperbole, nothing wrong with that but irrelevant. Remains to be seen of course, three managers have got us up and one kept us up for ages, and that is before thinking about pre-Premier history. This new signing model (triple, quadruple our outlay when we sell a player etc) seems as much ALK as VK. I like VK a lot but if we make him the messiah his ego will go even higher and I’m not sure that is good for us.

Re: Matt Williams on the transfer window
Schulz is an interesting one.
Signed for Dortmund for 25m and was getting in the Germany team but a combination of injuries, the form of Rafael Geurreiro and an accusation of domestic violence saw him frozen out and he never kicked on, just 40 games in 4 years with them.
He was an absolute baller at one point, definite quality there but whether he’s motivated to put it to use is another story

Always very interesting indeed to hear about the clubs dealings literally from the horses mouth . He comes over well as he did in “ MTB” in what is presumably a “ strategic piece “ from the club to allay any concerns about our adventurous transfer dealings . Chelsea sound utter ar@es , though the “triple/quad player value “ is a bit optimistic in most cases I’d imagine, and very much dependent on a decent team .There’s a touch of (slightly queasy) building VK up as a Messiah but VK’s aura is obviously infectious around the club .

Re: Matt Williams on the transfer window
Good interview which I enjoyed listening to.
However, maybe it’s the cynic in me but, I don’t really believe the Tresor story. It was pretty common knowledge he wasn’t sure about the move to Burnley and changed his mind several times. Even in his interview after he signed its was a little awkward when asked about the ‘was it on or off’ question. I think this could be a story the club have tried to push to take the pressure off the player and the damage it could potentially cause with his relationship with the fans before it’s even begun.

That comment about kompany being the best thing to happen to Burnley really isn’t that deep, he’s just made a comment about someone he’s working with on a day to day basis who he sees how hard they work and the main reason we got back to the premier league
