I'm not a regular poster but I've been about a long time - since early 2000's on Clarets Mad.

I've just woke up and bizarrely it popped into my head about a poster who won the lottery, must have been about 15 years ago?

Anyway I remember it quite clearly. He said it was a syndicate win and he got around £300k. I also remember him saying he was going to give a big donation to either comic relief or childen in need which was on that week.

Just wondering if anyone knows who it was and if he's still on the board?

A lad i knew from Padiham called Anthony Young (posh) won £2.3mil back in 2011, he purchased a last minute luck dip from the Grove Off licence.
Not too sure if he has any left.

I had someone come into my place of work 3 or 4 months ago asking for the old owner ( he retired 9 yrs ago )
After lengthy conversation, it transpired that the last time they had both met / conversed, was at grammar school some 50 yrs ago !
Needless to say information was kept to a minimum.

He had a good couple of years over in America. He’s back in Padiham now catching the bus to Colne for work at 5am.

I was told about his adventures in America with his friends and family.
I also thought i saw him a while back while driving up Victoria Road inPadiham wearing work gear. This more than likely confirms it was him.

I would like to think if i ever found myself in that situation, i would never work again.

There was a syndicate at ASK Rewinds in Altham that all won around £300K apiece around 15 or so years ago. I seem to remember the owner struggling to get lads in to do overtime after that.

Different story. In 1990/91 my boss told me that the firm was looking for cost savings - this always means job cuts. There were 10 staff, including me in my team. One, I'll call him Ernie, was in his 50s, the rest of us were younger. Ernie had lots of experience and was very popular with all the team, especially the 4/5 relative youngsters he supervised. But, my boss was a new arrival. He didn't really know any of us very well. He identified Ernie for redundancy. He said he was "close to retirement" and the redundancy terms would make up his pension for the years from leaving until he was 60. (Many of the long term service/older staff always spoke of adding years of service to your age - and the best time to retire was around 52 years old). Ernie was 52. But, Ernie hadn't been with the firm for much more than 5 years, he didn't have 30 years pension savings behind him. Ernie's plans were to keep working until he was 60 when his pension would start. (Where he'd worked before hadn't provided a pension other than state pension). I knew Ernie's plans. He'd also spoken about his daughter getting married in the summer and how he was struggling to pay for her wedding. I wasn't looking forward to a conversation with my boss about who should be selected for redundancy. I didn't want Ernie to be made redundant. My boss put a meeting in my calendar for a week's time when he got back from a business trip. That weekend Ernie got some great news, he'd won the Pools! This was early June, so the pools were based on Australian football results - and, of course, not as many people did the pools in the summer. Ernie won £150,000. That was a lot of money 30 years ago. I'd guess much more than 10 years of Ernie's after tax pay. it was wonderful news for Ernie. All his money concerns had disappeared. He now wanted to retire. It was an easy thing for me to recommend him for the redundancy pay off. So, with the redundancy lump sum, enhanced pension for leaving early and his pools win Ernie was set up very well. We were all very pleased for him. He took all the team for an excellent lunch on his last day at work. His daughter had an excellent wedding day.

similar story to my grandfather - I was a baby at the time but he won the pools when faced with losing his job in the early 70's - it was about £80k at the time which must equate to about a million in today's money I think. He retired immediately from the railways, and took up a part time job not soon after teaching kids woodwork in school.

Good lad him & his brothers. The other two are working down south at the minute. I think they usually go down there in the summers to work at the caravan sites then come back home for the winter.

I was speaking to Anthony the other day. He had a close eye on his 50p accumulator down the pub!

i know him well, some bird screws him over… he’s been living a normal working life for about ten years now! his wealth didn last long!
