Lost Pubs of Burnley

After CT's reference to the Mitre in his 1998 article, I looked it up and found this site:

Any memories stand out? The Manor Barn was my local and where I had my first illegal pint and I still miss the Talbot for real ale, it was a great pre-match pub.

If you ever went into The Ministry of Ale just across from Manny Rd station they had a whole display of photos of closed Burnley pubs around the walls. It was fascinating tbf and obviously somewhat ironic that The Ministry itself then closed down two or three years back.

I remember the Cricketers Anne street from years ago though i never went in. Think it was where the new(ish) housing is on Harry Potts Way, across from where the old players entrance was.
My dad and his mates used to go in there before the games while i hung around outside waiting.

The far side of the Park View was on Anne Street. The cricketers was on that side of the street and on the corner of I think the top row on the street. Anne street ran from the Park View all the way up to Todmorden Road. It was the first street behind what was then Brunshaw Road. The Cricks was where all the journalists used to go. Not sure when it closed but I can't remember ever having gone in.

We miss the Irish League before and after the match, but Scarecrow (coaching house) Bull and Butcher and the Coal Clough Coaching house.

The far side of the Park View was on Anne Street. The cricketers was on that side of the street and on the corner of I think the top row on the street. Thanks, I got it wrong being the bottom of the top row on Anne Street, it was the top of the previous row. But on the corner of Mary Street which still runs from the old school yard gate of Tod Rod school to Helena Street.

The Hop was a cracking pub, garbage beer but always packed at weekends. Talbot is a massive miss but the Circ and the pubs around there sell very good beer and Always busy match day.

You could have 6 pints in different pubs within easy reach of the hop.
Accrington road is a big miss for me, 5 pubs and 3 clubs all full of characters, rosegrove and padiham Rd are more or less without pubs now and they too were great places to drink.
No wonder I don't go out as much nowadays!

The Borough was a regular stop before the train back on a matchday, much better than the soulless options around the station of late

I went into the Cricks a couple of times with my older journalist colleagues. Ron Kennedy (By Ronald Kennedy in the Sunday Express) ran his own sports agency, and he was a lovely man to boot. Pretty certain he was the man who sorted it with the Cricks so the national boys could use the phone there to phone over their copy, the ones that weren’t doing running reports that is. Of course Peter Higgs and Keith McNee would be there too

Couple I remember were Cottage in the Wood & Owl in the Wood which were basically next door to each other in Burnley Wood.

The Cricketers closed in 1972. I went in a couple of times with my mate before going on the Turf.

Cricks was nearest pub to where I lived on Olympia st but don’t recall ever going in. Anne st ( pronounced Annie) was always the roughest part of fulledge. Strange that there was never a pub on either Athletic St Olympia St Brockenhurst St or Lyndhurst Road. At least I don’t think there was In the 50/60’s there seemed to pubs on every corner.Poor but Happy days

There has been no obvious change to The Talbot, but there's something going on at The Sparrowhawk - lit up like a Christmas Tree when I went past the other night.

It's quite sad how pubs have disappeared. They were a big part of our culture and even if you didn't go in them they were a part of the landscape. They were landmarks and even influenced the informal names of areas. If someone asked where you lived you'd say "near the Red Lion". My nana was born and raised in Burnley and called the area she grew up in 'Mitre'.

I was probably in a minority frequenting the 'Coach and Horses' but it was great having a pub so near to the Turf that was rarely rammed. I generally only drink Guinness so that wasn't an issue.

Shooters is actually in Burnley Had some cracking pub crawls in Nelson and Brierfield

Disagree completely. Can understand the sentiment around peoples memories of good times in pubs but they hark back to a day when blokes got drunk down pubs whilst the women stayed at home looking after the kids and domestic duties.

I think that the fact that the younger generation of families spend a lot more time together and have lots more choice of activity's to do aside from sitting in a pub drinking leads to a much healthier balance in life and the fact that there isn't enough people drinking their evenings away to sustain all these pubs is imo a positive of modern life

Probably only at weekends now though, with modern life they can't afford it during the working week.

Disagree, a lot has changed. No doubt some people still spend more time down the pub than with their families but they are a very small minority and in general families spend a lot more time doing stuff together than they did 30-40 years ago when a lot of these boozers were going strong.

I do agree with you but I was stood on the school yard today waiting to pick the kids up and couldn’t believe the fact almost every parent looked so overweight, I’m not sure we do have a healthier lifestyle, I read recently over 70% of uk adults don’t exercise enough, that’s really sad as it’s only 40-60 minutes a day, everyone (who can) should find time

I do agree with you but I was stood on the school yard today waiting to pick the kids up and couldn’t believe the fact almost every parent looked so overweight, I’m not sure we do have a healthier lifestyle, I read recently over 70% of uk adults don’t exercise enough, that’s really sad as it’s only 40-60 minutes a day, everyone (who can) should find time

Yep I didn't mean healthier as in the literal physical meaning of the word but more in the mental and well being sense that spending quality time together as opposed to blokes spending a lot of their free time with other blokes in a boozer is a more healthier environment for all the family to live in.

Diet, exercise and generally staying active through either work or leisure is a real problem in this country
