Leeds fan jailed for attacking Eddie Howe

Post by ClaretTony » Fri Sep 08, 2023 5:00 pm

A Leeds fan got into the technical area last season and pushed Eddie Howe in his shoulder during their home game against Newcastle. Leeds have already banned him for life and he’s now been sent down for 12 weeks.

Good point, given he's a Leeds supporter there are probably mental health issues that might be better addressed in some other form of secure unit.

Perhaps, maybe a public Flogging in Newcastle City Centre may have been better.

Not at all. An example to the morons that you can’t attack a man for doing his job.
Next one should get 6 months.

Well then they should apply the sentencing to all assaults on workers - but they don't.

Does or should this now set a precedent if assault but too light to cause injury happens at a lower level, such as non league? What happens if it is at a fans event and follows an argument?

Seems to me to be a bit of a thin end of a wedge, the law shouldn’t be a deterrent, the ban does that, the law is the law and has to hand out justice. Not sure a 3 month sentence is proportionate on this case (though I haven’t read everything about it).

The comments of the judge are in this short BBC news report

Thanks.

So it seems the high profile nature of the game was key with many millions watching, i.e. the judge is using it as a deterrent which is what I suspected.

Reinforces in my mind that this prat may well deserve what he gets but I’m not sure it is wise nonetheless.

Too lenient as far as I’m concerned. Very little respect shown by many towards other human beings. That’s what we’re short of in this country, proper deterrents in every aspect of daily life.

Managers, players are vulnerable when someone gets on the pitch. Look at the one at Ewood in 2017 when he virtually got away with worse than this.

I’m with beddie on this.

Yeah I think this sentencing was needed to show some sort of deterrent.

It’s becoming a bit of a thing going on the pitch with malicious intent - I can’t recall it happening much from when I started going on in the sort of mid 90s till the past sort of seven years or so… most notable example being that Birmingham fan who actually assaulted Jack Grealish on the pitch.

Lucky he didn’t do this at a game in Saudi
He would only be able to repeat the offence if he had good prosthetic limbs to allow him to run and
D then strike a manager

Part of the Sentencing Exercise is deterrent, it’s one of the 5 purposes of sentencing.

Comes from the top down, imo.

When your politicians/ruling class are blatant crooks then it has ramifications across society.

Also factor in rampant wealth inequality and cost of living etc

If he’d punched him, I’d totally get it. Pushed on the shoulder - 12 weeks (out in 5) seems harsh.

Spectacularly missing the point mate. Nothing to do with how an individual votes - my retort was also to the ‘society in the dogs’ comment, not this specific incident.

Crime rates etc in pretty much all countries across the globe rises when wealth inequality rises to unsustainable levels. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why

I think all these guys who invade the pitch and confront players and staff deserve a bit of porridge. Seems to be a badge of honour for the loons at the moments.

Having watched the video, it seems a bit extreme. I understand the potential for escalation of trouble given the situation and the fact that he entered the field of play. I was expecting to at least see a shove which made Eddie have to regain his balance.
It's 2 weeks less than the guy who punched grealish on the blindside.

Yet a referee who punched twice during an under 7's game by an angry parent and the perpetrator got 150 hours community service.

There’s a common misconception that the police and the courts are there to help protect everyone. They are actually there to protect the extremely wealthy and ‘well to do’ ruling class from the rest of us….

I’m of the opinion that if this happens at the fish counter in Tesco, the perp may well get arrested, but jail time? Not a chance. I don’t know what the sentencing criteria is for this type of offence but anyone with a sense of fairness can see he’s been shafted.

So you will know all about the suicide rate, the number of assaults, the chronic shortage of staff, the La k of medical provision, the lack of education and training, the aged and crumbling infrastructure and the problems with rodent infestation? Not sure access to a PS4 makes up for all that!🤡😂

Interesting that this guy got 12 weeks, but I wonder what sentence the girls who pie-faced Michael O’Leary in Brussels would’ve got in a British court?

For me the two cases are comparable according to the judge's comments

You've got to weigh up the sentence without being enraged that it happened at a sacred football ground. Offences are treated more harshly if they're at a football ground. If this happened on the street, in a pub, at a gig, wherever. It's dealt with by a community sentence, fine etc. So yes, it is over the top. Once you enter a football ground, you're treated differently by the law of the land. This is wrong.

According to VAR if the shoulder push had been outside the technical area the penalty would not have been so harsh.

The obvious difference between this incident and one on the street or at the Tesco fish counter is that the perp has already committed an offence by entering the field of play. His actions will also have been seen by tens of thousands of people, so the severe punishment is in part a deterrent for others to do equally brainless things.

Surprising how many people disagree with the sentence.

Or even been inside a prison!
Have you? I've visited prisons on a few occasions.

Is it also clearly stated to be illegal to enter the street, a pub, a gig or wherever?

It can be. It's called Trespassing. Still wouldn't cross the custodial sentencing threshold though......
