God Save The King
Needs to be axed as our national anthem and replaced by Jerusalem.
1. GSTK is so underwhelming and uninspiring, must be the worst national anthem in the world.
2. Not everyone is a royalist.
3.It’s too short.
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

Too Short??? I thought there were quite a number of verses, 6 at least.
Re: God Save The King
I know a national anthem’s sole objective is not to get thousands of football fans roused to a high level, but ours will never create the noise and unified voice that Flower of Scotland did last night.
I’ve grown to like GSTK more over the years but would love to see it replaced with Land of Hope and Glory.

The only two rousing anthems seem to be the French and Italian ones.burnmark wrote: ↑Wed Sep 13, 2023 5:30 pmI know a national anthem’s sole objective is not to get thousands of football fans roused to a high level, but ours will never create the noise and unified voice that Flower of Scotland did last night.

It’s as outdated as the monarchy is.
Needs binning (like the monarchy does) immediately.

The words are not as good as those in the Spanish anthem.!!!
But is thread because the Scots booed it? They would boo any other anthem we chose. Simply put, they and the other cells don't like the English.

There's something wrong when the national anthem of the UK is the same as the national anthem of England.

What would make the more money is opening the palaces up (like France and many other counties do) and charge visitors.
As for the commonwealth? All the countries want to leave and get their independence back.

I wonder what percentage of tourists to the UK see a member of the Royal family. If it's as close to zero as I suspect it is then I don't think they can take the credit for attracting them.Lip wrote: ↑Wed Sep 13, 2023 7:22 pmDon't talk stupid CC..the monarchy are the backbone of our glorious country and do it proud. Love them or hate them the Royal family are an intrinsic part of the history of this country.
The traditions, the pageantry, and the palaces are all intrinsic parts of living under a monarchy. Those aspects are easily accessible even if the Royal family themselves are not

Well yes. They seem interchangeable for most of this thread, but one is thought to be a song about how wonderful England is (when that isn't what the song is about). You can have that one.Croydon Claret wrote: ↑Wed Sep 13, 2023 7:14 pmThere's something wrong when the national anthem of the UK is the same as the national anthem of England.

The other one is supposed to be about what a wonderful dude the king is, but the dirge is treated by the rest of us as an English supremecist song, and as such, it is now just as bad as all that sectarian rubbish that goes on in Glasgow. I don't mind singing a little song about how good the king is, as he's a decent bloke, but not that song.
Maybe we could sing about all of them together:-
"Queen camilla, william, Harry, Charles."
fits perfectly with the teletubbies music, for instance.

God save the Queen could be very rousing , especially at big Eng games ( more especially away ) Though gotta say GSTK feels a bit flaccid, and gotta say I’d love Jerusalem or Land of Hope and Glory. Though let’s face it ,it’s not changing anytime soon .

No wonder they booed it.

Re: God Save The King
Pity really the English haven't got an athem dedicated to Edward Longshanks for the matches against Scotland. Thing is we don't play them very often now in competition as they rarely qualify.

I'm not denying that. All the palaces, the history etc would still attract tourists.Croydon Claret wrote: ↑Wed Sep 13, 2023 7:56 pmI only saw the Queen once in 20+ years of working in London but it's about more than just catching a glance of an individual.

The idea that tourism would end if the Royals were binned off is nonsense.

Certainly better than any of the digest from Victoria Empire days. Who in their right mind would happily sing Jerusalem (Exc WI of course) or Land of H & G?
It all needs consigning to the past.
Get Elton John or Paul McCartney to write on or even younger.
Ir maybe the lads from Little Britain to write one for England! Victoria Wood would have nailed it with her friend Kimberley!

The same would be true of all attractions. What percentage of tourists visit Stonehenge? Or the Lake District? Or the Giant's Causeway? Or the British Museum? Or the Jorvik Viking Centre? Every one of them taken singly makes a minimal contribution to the UK tourist industry, but that doesn't mean that they could be closed without affecting the whole.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Wed Sep 13, 2023 7:49 pmI wonder what percentage of tourists to the UK see a member of the Royal family. (I think the post was probably referring to the royal pageantry as a whole, not specifically the individuals.)
I was in London a few weeks ago and it surprised me how many people (thousands rather than hundreds) were there to see the Changing of the Guard. If the monarchy and its pageantry were not there, it would certainly have an effect.

Uruguay - at least as good if not better.
The intro is longer than our anthem at about 40 seconds!

Re: God Save The King
Regardless of that, the tourism argument is ridiculous - as if that is a valid reason to have a monarchy. To make a ludicrous example it would be like the British still having public executions because they draw a crowd and keep street vendors in business.dsr wrote: ↑Thu Sep 14, 2023 10:50 amThe same would be true of all attractions. I think the only way to put the tourism theory to the test is to abolish the monarchy and then see what the results are, over the course of about 50 years.
That seems to be the time frame that's been decided for judging the outcomes of big, radical changes to our constitution.

Yeah, calling on a deity I don't believe in to protect an unelected hereditary ruler does nowt for me.
However, even if you're a god-fearing Monarchist you can still see clear as day it's a crap song to a crap tune, and doesn't reflect England in any way.

Re: God Save The King
Tourism is never used as a valid reason to have a monarchy. Tourism crops up because anti-monarchists bang on about how much cheaper it would be to have another system of government, and tourism is raised as a way of refuting that argument.

No I think bootlicking a bunch of toffs that dress in 17th century attire, cream resources, reinforce & uphold class divide, inequality & elitism is the ‘not so cool thing’.

Boring dirge asking someone who does not exist to save someone who means bugger all to me. No thanks.
Give me a new English anthem that is about my country and I would sing it loud and proud.
