Premier League potential TV changes
Sounds like they are proposing Sunday evening games with a 6:30 kick off. Fans very much bottom of the pile again

Fans aren't bottom of the pile, they aren't even in it.

They’re also thinking about scrapping the 3pm blackout
Re: Premier League potential TV changes
Once fans start putting as much money into the premier league as the TV companies do they then can have a say in kick off times, until then the TV companies will want kick off times that result in the most revenue..6.30pm on a Sunday would probably get good figures

Think Sunday 6.30pm might be the tipping point for me and my season ticket tbh. Proper crap.

I'd prefer it to any of the 8pm kick offs to be honestdaveisaclaret wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 5:21 pmThink Sunday 6.30pm might be the tipping point for me and my season ticket tbh. Proper crap.

I sort of agree with your point.Nori1958 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 5:18 pmOnce fans start putting as much money into the premier league as the TV companies do they then can have a say in kick off times, until then the TV companies will want kick off times that result in the most revenue..6.30pm on a Sunday would probably get good figures
On the other hand, if supporters were to unite against kick off times that suit foreign audiences more than those that attend games, it would devalue the product being sold.
A pile of empty seats and no atmosphere would definitely have an impact. Im not sure if they’d get away with this sort of thing in somewhere like Germany.
Sadly, they know that for every fan that says enough is enough, there will be a load more willing to take their seat, especially for the big teams.
Sunday away games are a pain as it is, particularly for those that can’t or don’t want to drive. Having later games will only make that problem even more difficult, if not possible at all for many.
To simply dismiss your traditional supporter in favour of money is exactly what is wrong with modern football. It’s just greed and money shouldn’t always be the deciding factor.
I’d also argue that there are already too many televised game slots without making each weekend game after game, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. They obviously see a market for it, perhaps similar to what they do for NFL.
I love my football but even I’m bored of watching it, aside from Burnley.

Everytime a new time is announced, there's an outcry and suggestions that games will be played in half empty stadiums, but that hasn't happened yet, and it very likely it will never happen, so the TV companies will continue to change kick offs to suit them.DCWat wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 5:53 pmI sort of agree with your point.

Sometimes the new times suit better than others, a group of us meet up every game, none of us live in burnley, the furthest travel is about 70 miles and amongst the group are several young school children, so the 8pm weekday kick offs are a pain, whereas 6.30pm Sunday is a little easier

That would be great news if they can also then come up with a way for fans to watch all of their clubs games without need to resort to dodgy IPTV providers, or other work around.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 3:56 pmThey’re also thinking about scrapping the 3pm blackout

Can see why it would be an issue for some, but personally wouldn’t mind this. Keeps most of the day free to spend with the family.

Re: Premier League potential TV changes
Thsts not so bad if it a home game that’s 6:30 on a Sunday, but you can be assured that any games we get at that time will be away to West Ham/Palace/BournemouthNori1958 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 6:04 pmEverytime a new time is announced, there's an outcry and suggestions that games will be played in half empty stadiums, but that hasn't happened yet, and it very likely it will never happen, so the TV companies will continue to change kick offs to suit them.

Re: Premier League potential TV changes
I guess it depends how you get to those games.
Driving, i'd prefer that time than 8pm on a Monday or Friday... especially getting to those grounds
Trains, would be a pain...but that would be true for any evening games, as getting back can be almost impossible.
Re: Premier League potential TV changes
That’s sort of my point, that it’s getting to a point where fans do need to start objecting.Nori1958 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 6:04 pmEverytime a new time is announced, there's an outcry and suggestions that games will be played in half empty stadiums, but that hasn't happened yet, and it very likely it will never happen, so the TV companies will continue to change kick offs to suit them.

It may not be so bad for some, for home games. Not so great if you’re an away fan travelling hundreds of miles (or for home fans that travel a distance).
We seem a little too willing to just accept things in this country - simply saying that until we put in the same money as the TV companies, we have to accept it, being a prime example.
Re: Premier League potential TV changes
I think, as I've pointed out above, the 6.30 game might be better for travelling than other times. Other than Saturday 3pm...when is a good time to travel...home or away?DCWat wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 6:44 pmThat’s sort of my point, that it’s getting to a point where fans do need to start objecting.

Like I said, you cannot please everyone....but there is almost zero chance of any major demonstration against the kick off times, so yes in reality we have to accept it.

Re: Premier League potential TV changes
This is not welcome news in the slightest. Maybe it wouldn't be as bad if I lived in Burnley. Will impact some more than others. Hopefully no more than one or two Burnley games per season in this ridiculous slot.
They really are verging on overkill with the TV football schedule.

Re: Premier League potential TV changes
I’d just get rid of these tv companies and the PL itself should have a Netflix style system where you pay for a season ticket and every game is available. 1 Saturday Lunch, 2 Sunday Lunch, 1 Monday Night and the rest Saturday afternoon, all available to watch. Cut out all the other channels. No need to move games about.

They do this in the NFL with game pass which is £180 per year, and you get access to every match

Re: Premier League potential TV changes
It seems inevitable that a season pass style online subscription will happen eventually. The problem is that UK customers get fleeced by Sky who will cling onto the model they have as the UK is their main market. The difference in price for a UK and non-UK customer is staggering. The more that people start to use IPTV / illegal streaming etc. should eventually force Sky or the PL into change. I still don't quite understand why the PL don't consider cutting out the middle man and hosting their own streaming platform - maybe this has been considered by people more knowledgable than me about the pros/cons to this system.
I don't mind some variability in match times but having almost daily PL matches broadcast at times with constant ads puts me off watching the PL rather than wanting to fork out to watch it. Maybe it's just me but I have other things to do with my time.
What I fear is that a subscription model with multiple matches streaming simultaneously will lead to more people watching bigger clubs who will demand more revenue based on viewers, potentially leaving smaller clubs such as ours out of pocket. But the idea of more matches being played at a similar time with a tighter, more predictable schedule and being able to choose which match to watch is far more attractive to me than the current system. But maybe some are happy to pay for Sky, BT etc with increasingly frequent matches broadcast in the current system. Each to their own I guess.

The fans contribute to the ‘specticle’. Without them, it’s not the same as covid proved. They deserve a say.Nori1958 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 5:18 pmOnce fans start putting as much money into the premier league as the TV companies do they then can have a say in kick off times, until then the TV companies will want kick off times that result in the most revenue..6.30pm on a Sunday would probably get good figures

it would be crap for exiles with season tickets relying on public transport

I don't mind the Sunday 6:30pm slot but if it comes in then fixtures should be allocated a telly slot based on the distance away fans have to travel.

Re: Premier League potential TV changes
I think if I were for example a Peterborough season ticket holder I would probably want to go to London Road at 3pm rather than watch Fulham v Everton on telly. They'd still have all the 'big' PL fixtures in the non-3pm slots.

I wouldn't have thought it would make much differencesummitclaret wrote: ↑Thu Sep 21, 2023 1:00 pmWhat about the effect on the other English Divisions if live 3.00 Saturday PL games are to be screened?
I cannot think of any time I would have stayed at home to watch a game and not go and watch burnley

Re: Premier League potential TV changes
The effect will be on divisions lower down. It wouldn't be Peterborough fans deciding to watch Peterborough instead of whatever's on the telly, it would be Burnley fans deciding to watch Burnley away on the telly/in the pub instead of going to watch Colne/Padiham or whoever.

Re: Premier League potential TV changes
Prime example of a non sequitur….
Re: Premier League potential TV changes
Does anyone actually care to watch women's football on Saturday, or any day for that matter. Luckily the BBC show it free but if the greedy tv companies get hold of the rights and start charging, can't see many people subscribing so how it will grow is a mystery. Its obvious that the packages will be offered to as many companies as possible each one charging their outrageous fees. Is it any wonder fans are looking at alternative methods of finding how to watch games. You just hope that this ridiculous idea spreading games over several days fails miserably. Its the thin edge of the wedge. It won't be long until we get kick off times to suit the american or middle east market. Pure greed from tv, players and the boards that run the clubs. I sometimes wonder why managers complain, its their chairman that have agreed to it with nil thought to the fans cos we don't matter anymore.
