£10m take it or leave it offer then
Re: MAATSEN
He didn't want to join us in the summer when Chelsea accepted our offer so I can't see why he would join us in January. My bet is that he'll run down his contract and sign for a team with a much bigger clout than us next summer.

Yeah they pocket a massive signing on fee if their a free agent dont they? He will have higher wages also as no fee to pay, good luck to him.johnnyjones wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 12:09 amAgreed

I wouldn't go anywhere close to the 31 million that was apparently the fee, that's pure insanity

He had his chance to join us and preferred to stay at Chelsea Now Chelsea are going to shat on him
Sorry we've moved on.The recruitment team will find us a lb if VK wants much cheaper than the silly money Chelsea allegedly want

Re: MAATSEN
Is he still the type of wingback we want for our way of playing at the moment? He's really used to sticking on the line, defensively not that solid. Aren't we looking for a type that can play at midfield as well for the inverted wingback role.
Then you might prefer a different kind of player, like Roberts but even more of a playmaker from the back. Someone with great vision and passing. Almost a Sander Berge mixed with some Charlie Taylor bite to him.
If we would run with upcoming fullbacks of course Maatsen is one of the best. But we aren't are we? It's still unclear to me whether only Roberts can go up and down or if it's both of them. What exactly the instructions are. It seems to even change during the game.
They did try to buy him at the end of the window so could be VK is trying to mix things up a little and confuse the opponents (and even us) to what our wingbacks actually are about to do.

Re: MAATSEN
I’ve seen him linked to Man City. One thing is for sure he won’t be coming here on a cut price deal.
Time to move on, as I’m sure we have done.

Re: MAATSEN
My view, from what we do know and filling the gaps, is that Maatsen did want to join Burnley early in the summer but Chelsea said no.
Maatsen then got into the Chelsea team and played quite well, receiving praise from the Manager which probably suggested he was part of the first team plans this season.
Contract negotiations likely haven’t gone the way of Maatsen or his agent who, based upon the above, felt they should get a better deal.
With negotiations stalling they then tried a last ditch effort to offload him to us, and we were desperate, hence the £31m package.
At this point Maatsen had dug his heals in and decided Chelsea weren’t treating him this way, and undervaluing him from an contract POV if they feel he’s worth £31m, and he’d play out his final year so he (and his agent!) was in charge of his future.
The above doesn’t mean he wouldn’t sign for us. I’d still have him, so long as the fee in January was reasonable (£10m or less with 6 months of his contract left), or his wage demands in the summer weren’t astronomical compared with the rest of the squad.

Re: MAATSEN
I doubt we will see Maatsen joining us now. He is clearly expecting either to play regularly at Chelsea, which doesn’t look like happening, or he’ll join a top 8 side either in January or June of next year.

At the moment Taylor is the defender we need. Good luck to Maatsen but I doubt he'll come here.
Re: MAATSEN
As much as I liked Ian when he was with us, and he developed in his defensive role over the season. The fact when Chelsea have used him, has been one of the 3 behind the striker. I don’t think he’s the LB we want/need anymore.

Re: MAATSEN
Me too, if the manager reckons thats who he wants and if the price is right, though i fear it'll be too high.
Be a huge addition to the squad.
Re: MAATSEN
If he won't sign for Chelsea, he will be sidelined.
Not sure he has enough, yet, for us in the prem.

Re: MAATSEN
This is a WIN WIN for Burnley. We need to find out if Chelsea will accept a max of £12M, find out from Maatsen's agent if he would reconsider us, and get it done at the START of the Jan window, leaving us ample time if it does not happen. Hopefully by then, we will be off the foot of the table, and be a more attractive option. VK got the best out of him, and Burnley will be the most interested club. I genuinely feel he will struggle to attract another PL team. Look at Lakongo, for whatever reason he did not join us and ended up at Luton at the last hour of the window. Of course VK might have lost faith in Maatsen after refusing to join us
Re: MAATSEN
The thing I think is quite sad is that he's almost at his peak and could well miss out on a whole season if not in the Chelsea team. He might end up financially better off but missing a whole year in what can be a relatively short career could be detrimental.

Re: MAATSEN
If Man City are keen on him then I can definitely see him going there.
However, I would think that he would then come on loan to us so that Pep can assess him playing regularly for a manager Pep trusts and who Maatsen already knows.
Win win for everyone.. temporarily anyway.

Without knowing the ins and outs of this, it sounds like quite the opposite.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 1:19 amHe had his chance to join us and preferred to stay at Chelsea Now Chelsea are going to shat on him
Maatsen refused to move on deadline day. Chelsea therefore missed out on what was reported to be a big fee.
If he is now refusing to agree terms with Chelsea then he can run his contract down and leave on his own terms next summer.
If this is the case then the ball is now firmly in the payer's agent's court.

Re: MAATSEN
I would have him back in a heartbeat.
Don’t blame him at all for staying at Chelsea and trying to get first team football there… Don’t blame him at all for being happy that he was staying at Chelsea either. He owes us nothing. He was tremendous for us, not only on the pitch, but off the pitch with his community work as well. If we can agree on a price, then he comes back here my blessing. The fee though at the moment is ridiculously high.

Re: MAATSEN
A bit ambivalent regarding Maatsen in the premier league. He doesn’t seem good enough defensively as a left back nor quite good enough as winger. Although I am sure VK would find a niche for him. But think we could sign a better player for £15m never mind £30m.

Isn't he 20/21? Loads of time to develop his all round game.
Re: MAATSEN
...'failing to make progress in contract negotiations'. I doubt we can compete with Chelsea on wages so if they can't agree a deal.... Of course it could be other factors then wages.

Re: MAATSEN
We need to be in a good league position to be in with a change of recruiting Ian Maatsen or anybody as good as him. That needs to be the focus until January
