Trafford 7* - some good saves but struggled with their press
Roberts 5 - struggled with their press
AAD 6 - minus one for a really poor mistake
Beyer 6 - defended okay
Taylor 5 - struggled with their press
Cullen 5 - struggled with their press
Brownhill 5 - good off the ball, awful on it
Berge 6 - some good work, some wasteful work
Koleosho 5 - bright first 15, that’s about it
Ramsey 4 - struggled with everything
Amdouni 5 - not in the game, has to score

Larsen 6 - bit better
Rodriguez 5 - off the pace
Odobert 7 - looks a player

When I’ve watched Newcastle over the past year or so what a has impressed the most is their physicality and press. They suffocate teams and that’s what happened today. Positives are staying in the game so long, having a better off the ball shape to us (didn’t collapse) and creating a decent couple of openings. Season starts now?

Trafford - 7 - distribution a bit iffy but he unquestionably kept us in it.

Roberts - 5. Poor in possession.
AAD - 5 - an extra mark for his header but 2 dumb decisions in 10 seconds sealed out fate.
Beyer -5 - looked uncomfortable all afternoon.
Taylor - 6 - at least he put himself about.

Cullen- 5 - way too pedestrian
Berge - 6
Brownhill - 5

Koleosho- 5 - a bright opening but once they shut him down they shut us down.
Amdouni - 5 - scraps at best
Ramsey - 3 - abysmal.

Odobert - 7 - one bright spot.
Zaroury - no mark but 4 assists midweek and he’s on in the 88th minute. That’s Dyche-esque.

Defeat expected. Manner not. I’m always intrigued to see how we come out in the 2nd half ie what reaction are we going to get. Today in the first 5 mins of the 2nd half we were absolutely battered.

Massive game on Tuesday. We are nowhere near a settled side and we won’t be until we stop commiting stupid individual errors.

Tough one to watch after such a promising performance against United last week. No fight, lack of options for the pass, too many times giving the ball back to Newcastle.

Onwards and upwards and let’s get a good performance on Tuesday!

Trafford - 7 MOTM
Never a good sign when you lose and you keeper is among the best performers. He made some unreal saves and kept us in game for a while. I though he also improved box management and was less reluctant to catch the ball. Again really unlucky to concede yet another worldie. However, his distribution is a big issues because it's not either as precise nor as fast as Muric's.

Taylor - 5
Struggled a lot and was non existent in our attacking build ups. Should have been replaced in the summer but that's not his fault.

Beyer - 7
The only player from the back line who had a decent game. Still needs to work on coordination with teammates because there were some situations where gaps between himself and other players were too big.

AAD - 5
Not good. Lost a ball a lot of times in the first half and stupidly conceded a penalty. Was always going to be inconsistent given his age.

Roberts - 5
Poor game. Effort was there but misplaced a lot of passes.

Brownhill - 5
Didn't do much.

Cullen - 5
Didn't do much either.

Berge - 5
He is a passenger while we are defending. Better on the ball but struggled to get involved.

Ramsey - 4
No offence but I don't think he did anything positive today. Made some unnecessary fouls, lost the ball where you simply can not allow yourself to do so and didn't do anything in the opposition half. Probably should not start on the wing in the future.

Koleosho - 6
Always starts brightly and could have had an assist early on but just as many times before, he fades very quickly.

Amdouni - 5
Can't play up top on his own.

Subs:

Rodriguez - 5
Not a PL player anymore.

Bruun Larsen - 5
I have already said I like him profile wise, but he needs more minutes to convince us he is good enough to perform at this level.

Odobert - 6
Promising.

Kompany - 4
I think this was our worst performance so far. I liked the initial lineup but in reality nothing really worked. For a team that wants to play attractive brand of football, we simply do not look threating or convincing when attacking.

I'm not fond of that weird pressing structure where we commit with 4 or 5 players and opponents simply skips them with one simple pass (Villa were also having a field day when we defended like that). He had to make some subs at the half time but didn't.

We are not good enough to play Kompany football against the better sides. Talking to a couple of Geordies after the game and they said it was as though we were 1-0 up and had been told to park the bus. We offered so little up front, as soon as it went 1-0 I knew we had lost. Wouldn't have scored if we were still playing now.

Trafford 8 - his save from the diving header was outstanding
Roberts 6 - looks ponderous at times like he needs more time to think
AAD 6 - one point up for the header at goal minus one for the penalty, considering how much pressure they were under either with or without the ball I thought both centre backs did OK
Beyer 6
Taylor 6
Cullen 5 - lost control after the goal
Brownhill 5 - ditto
Berge 5 - some good bits, but some bad bits seems more involved than in the earlier games. Looked like he missed a sitter from the rebound off Pope following the early chance but I was in row X.
Koleosho 5 - bit like a firework, lots of fizz at the start and then splutters out once the oppo work him out. Seems reluctant to shoot at any time.
Amdouni 5 - made it easy for Pope with his only chance
Ramsey 5 - played much better in his deeper role vs United

Larsen 6 - improvement on Ramsey
Rodriguez 4 - offered little on this occasion
Odobert 7. - good cameo and was a threat

Trafford 7- some really good saves but his distribution is causing us problems every game. It might be his team mates faults for not doing their job, or just the fact that we are playing against much better and cleverer players. But I don’t think he’s putting enough pace on his passes.
Roberts 4 - another game where his passing was very sloppy. He’s hitting some awful blind and wayward passes these last few games.
AlDak 5 - his limitations in distribution are being exposed. Some good bits of defending.
Beyer 6- decent but struggling a bit with the step up and physicality of the opposition every week.
Taylor 6 - thought he did ok with his defending but offering very little going forward and we are missing this.
Cullen 5 - it’s tough for him. But he never hides and always shows for the ball. We are getting over run most weeks and it’s not just down to Cullen. But in this league the defensive midfielders seem to be mostly very powerful and strong aswell as having the attributes of Cullen in terms of picking the ball up deep. Not really sure we have many other options but would not be surprised if VK tries something different and leaves him out if results don’t come in a few weeks.
Brownhill 5- struggled like the rest of them.
Berge 6 - thought he was the pick of the midfield.
Koleosho 5 - struggling to last longer than 30 minutes….or even less today. One of our big issues is that when he does beat his man (which he has done in almost every game he has played) we cannot get anyone to keep up with him when he breaks. We look better if he’s getting to the by line and pulling it back but that’s only really happened against Forest. Without Foster we have nobody breaking their neck to support him and get in the box. Amdouni always appear to be deep.
Amdouni 5 - I like him but don’t think he’s getting the ball in his best position. He’s coming too deep. Seems to have a fair amount of balance and skill but he’s losing possession too much.
Ramsey 4 - worrying performance for somebody who cost as much as he did.

Larsen 5 - some good touches like he has had most games he’s come on as sub. But for some reason he still does not seem for me good enough to start compared to Zaroury, Benson and others.
Rodriguez 4 - won a couple of headers but it’s hard for him at the moment coming on when we are getting dominated.
Odobert 6 - probably our only plus in terms of outfield players today and giving the new players a taste of the league.

Tough times at the moment but we need to stick with the team and manager and hope we can get some kind of momentum going starting against Luton. Not sure the international breaks are good for us or not. Think the contrast from last year for the players in terms of our success and how quick they adapted to each other and the style of play to the realisation of how good the league is and still finding a way in terms of how we need to play could mean it’s going to take a month or 2 before we see the performances and results we need.

Trafford 6- positives, good shot stopping, made a couple of big saves. However his distribution is poor and whacking it too Koleosho in the air when marked by Dan Burn over and over was very frustrating too watch. Needs to move the ball quicker

Roberts 5 - every game plays a least two lazy balls inside which cause us a problem. Not enamoured by him at all and at this level I do not think he is good enough.

AAD 5 Mistake one was a bad mistake two was catastrophic, did ok but needs an experienced C/H at this level to help him, could say the same about Beyer.
Beyer 6 - defended okay, but hardly brought the ball out.

Taylor 7 consistent and solid, defended well

Cullen 5 - sideways and backwards, brings pressure on himself and others , poor game.

Brownhill 5 - good off the ball, awful on it, managed to take a decent corner for a change( only one mind)

Berge 5 needs to braver going forward, takes the easy option too often.

Koleosho 5 - bright first 15, then we stopped giving him the ball

Ramsey 4 - Bought the wrong Ramsey from Villa, harsh I know, but was weak all game.

Amdouni 5 - should have scored early doors, but the did little after that.

Larsen 5 meh
Rodriguez 4 double meh
Odobert 6 nice little cameo

Score early, different game, however after 10-15 minutes we looked out of ideas. We don’t have a different option and there is too much passing sideways and backwards.

We beat the press once in the whole game, we were bullied and both goals came from our mistakes.

Having said that this is a young team and it will make mistakes, but will get better, we need a leader on the pitch and we need to create more chances, the next few games have now become bigger than they need to be.

Balanced observation. Far too slow and not that accurate today.
I would add that his saves were not that clean, for the most part.

Trafford 4 one good save, distribution awful
Roberts 4 can't make the step up
Taylor 6
Beyer 5 struggling
Al Dakhil 5 struggling
Cullen 5 another struggling
Berge 7 good game today
Brownhill 4 same as Roberts
Ramsey 3 out of position and it showed
Koleosho 5 couple of decent runs then pretty much ineffective
Amdouni 5 poor up top

Outfield - 3

We're all fart and no sh1t

This team is to young, to small, to weak and to inexperienced for the Premier league. The game against Luton is massive.

After re watching the game I’m dropping my mark for AD down to a 4.

He was unbelievably poor. He needs protecting next game and dropping

Trafford 7
Roberts 5
Al-Dakhil 5
Beyer 7
Taylor 7
Berge 7
Cullen 6
Brownhill 5
Koleosho 5
Amdouni 5
Ramsey 4

Larsen 6
Rodriguez 5
Odobert 6

Only two or three players were effective in possession under intense pressing from very smart tactics by Howe.

Trafford 8 would have been a slaughter without him.
Roberts 5 bullied
AAD 5 minus one for poor penalty
Beyer 4 concerning how many times Isak breezed past him
Taylor 5 steady
Cullen 5 bullied
Brownhill 5 bullied
Berge 6 ok
Ramsey 4 bullied
Koleasho 6 started like dynamite but faded
Amdouni 5 thought he really struggled

Odobert 6 shining light
Larsen 5 did ok
What would constitute a slaughter for you? From memory he made 2 good saves. the 1 on 1 with Isak which was made easier by Isaks bad touch. The other was from the diving header which was an excellent save. Whilst they were both good saves you would expect any keeper to have saved them to be honest especially the 1on1. That said them saves kept us in the game without doubt. Having seen him live for the first time yesterday for me his passing and his speed of thought is not currently at a level that we require in the prem for the way we play. He dawdled on the ball so much yesterday it was mad it invited Newcastle into our area and put us unde massive pressure.it was crying out for a quick ball down the wing for Koleosho to chase as in the first 5 minutes and he was a massive part in why that never happened again.the other big reason why that never happens was how Newcastle pressed us and the lack of movement in front of him as well I guess.

Positive signs though but he has to learn and quick

Trafford 7
Roberts 6
Al Dakhil 6
Bayer 6
Taylor 6
Cullen 6
Berge 6
Brownhill 6
Koleosho 5
Amdouni 5
Ramsay 4

Odobert 6
Braun Larsen 6
JayRod 5

I did not see a spineless or inept team but one that stuck to the managers tactics against a good side. Thought we were just getting a bit of a foothold when the penalty ended the game. Definitely getting better out of possession but the lack of an ability to create after the first 15 was disappointing

Trafford 7* - His best game for us by some distance

Roberts 5
Al-Dakhil 5 - has to stay on his feet for the penallty, has to
Beyer 5
Taylor 6

Berge 6
Cullen 6
Brownhill 5

Koleosho 6 yet again, starts well, and then we stop giving him the ball
Amdouni 5
Ramsey 3 - I thought he was absolutely dreadful. Why no Zaroury, only VK knows

Larsen 6
Rodriguez 5
Odobert 7 - brought a spark to our game that was lacking

A strange one - just prior to the penalty, I thought we were getting a foothold - and then we hit the self destruct button, again

From tv
Trafford 7 made some good saves and catches but his distribution is nowhere near Muric's quality
Roberts 6 one of his poorer games, he seemed to find it easier passing to a black and white shirts than claret ones
AlDakhil 6 one off for the whole penalty debacle
Beyer 7 our best defender and performer on the day
Taylor 6 defensively average today
Cullen 5 struggling at this level against top teams
Brownhill 5 also struggles against the best PL midfielders
Berge 7 our best midfielder by far today, he's starting to fit in well now
Koleosho 5 a young talent who shines for 15 minutes at the beginning of each game before disappearing from view. Also, why do we play him on the right.
Amdouni 6 not a centre forward
Ramsey 4 can't see how he starts before some of the others on the bench

Too many light weight, inexpierence players compared to the top PL players. I don't think VK knows what his right blend is yet: last season's team with the arrival of Beyer was perfectly balanced with every player knowing his role in the team. We need to reach this stage quickly, preferably starting on Tuesday, because I am not feeling too confident as things stand.

Trafford 6 - some good atops but his distribution vs Muric v apparant. Time for a change as that feature really helps us beat the press.
Roberts 5 - Hit and miss.
AAD 5 - Poor mistake for the goal and diatribution wad too often slow and/or sideways.
Beyer 6 - Made an option for the simple pass Trafford ignored to kick long and lose possession for their second.
Taylor 5 - Need somebody more comfortable on the ball for that position.
Cullen 5 - Not finding space or being available like he was last season. We're missing that constant out ball greatly.
Brownhill 4 - Midfield was seriously dominated by an more youthful Newcastle trio.
Berge 6 - Some good moments but not frequent enough.
Koleosho 5 - Disappeared after an encouraging start.
Amdouni 5 - Might have scored, tough gig given lack of service.
Ramsey 4 - Shocking decision to play him wide left and even worse one to send him baxk out to that positiin after ht.

Larsen 6 - Improved us.
Rodriguez 4 - Did nothing.
Odobert 7 - Probably our silver lining on the day.
Zaroury - Should have started.

Trafford 7* Decent. Yes his distribution is not much better than Pope's but his handling is much better than Muric's. Very surprised to see him getting pelters from some fans after the game. People forget how divided the general view of Muric was last year. Teams defend high and the quick option is gone in most games.
Roberts 4 A Championship player tbh. Too wasteful and very poor defensively.
Taylor 5 Poor at times, however had no cover in front and had Almiron and Tripps coming in waves at him.
Beyer 5 Needs a big solid CB with him. He's missing TBH alongside him. Now he has AAD who is very raw and leaves him hanging.
"Terry" Dakhil 4 Very poor. The lad is a talent, but he is so green and today was a very bad day for him. He is going to have ups and down and I'm not sure we can afford that. We sorely need someone with experience in there. Not sure what is going on with O'Shea but IMO he is much better.
Cullen 5 Struggling in the Prem. Defensive mids are all well over 6 foot, stronger and quicker. He gets over ran and overpowered almost every game. He's earned the chance to sort it out, but I'm worried he is another who is too good for the Champ and not quite PL level.
Brownhill 5 Poor. See Cullen for pretty much the same comments.
Berge 6 Bigger, Stronger and slower. Ponderous at times and against the elite teams he struggles. Does have some decent runs at times.
Ramsey 4 Earned a start but at LM against KT and Almiron it was throwing him to the wolves. Cost us a goal with some weapons grade naivety. Should have been hooked at the break for his own good. A talented player and I hope his confidence does not get wrecked.
Amdouni 5 If he could just start banging in his chances he might flourish. Two games in a row he has missed decent chances early on. He is extremely talented, but he is going to take 6 months to get up to speed (Like the massively missed Foster did)
Koleosho 6 A great start where he scared the life out of Big Dan Burn. Then Newcastle throttled the service to him and he was anonymous thereafter.
Subs:
Braun Larsen 5 Some good touches. There is a player in there. Unfortunately, we have an abundance of wingers so they all just take minutes from each other.
Rodriguez 5 Not much service and couldn't do much on his own.
Odobert 7 The one real positive. This fella is a talent. Some great runs and very creative.
Zaroury NR Should have been given far more time. Hoping he comes more into the team as time goes on. A top talent on his day.
