I'm not one for blowing smoke up an opposition players backside but I'll make an exception for this guy:

He’s an unbelievable talent, arguably the best right back in world football for me.

Probably the only world class player we have had in my lifetime.

Aye, when KT had played 80 minutes and Oderbert had just come on. ;)

Blow anywhere near him, never mind his backside and he will fall flat on his face like today to get a free kick, brilliant player but one of the games top conmen. Did it several times today. Even at Burnley he started the trend of thumping the ground with his arm when fouled to get the other player booked.

Which makes the decision to not play winger against him from minute one very strange

I think it's a bit of a coup Newcastle got him. (Yes, they obviously pay a lot in wages.) I think he could get in pretty much any side on the planet.

You can see Eddie Howe's learning curve, used to be famed for signing young players and getting rid of the older heads - got the Newcastle job and signs Trippier and Dan Burn. That's our biggest mistake this summer, not signing an experienced CB but that may be a wage related choice. Tripps is quality and has got better with age.

Should have had Koleosho against him today. He struggles against direct, pacy wingers and would have had to sit deeper.
He absolutely bossed Ramsey who should have been replaced at half time.

It often gets overlooked because Newcastle finished in Europe last season and because of how Eddie Howe played at Bournemouth (and attempted to do with us with mixed results), but Newcastle can be a bit of a shithouse team, so I'm not surprised Trips is hitting the ground easily. He played under Simione for a while as well, don't forget.

Another reason big teams become big teams because they can be a shithouse as you say, City do it well

A good few years ago I'd taken some friends into the hospitality at Turf Moor. One of my friends, a keen Liverpool fan, asked who was out right back. I said that lad would play for England one day. It was Tripps and how right I was. Great, wholehearted player who I'm so glad to see doing well on the world stage.

Overall, when all is said and done, he might be the very best player I’ve seen play for us in my 31 years attending.

As well as being very good, he’s just so streetwise. Knows how to win fouls, knows how to play the ref, knows how to wind up opponents.

Think he’s the best player I have seen play for Burnley too.
Didn’t like some of his antics today though - he’s definitely developed some of the dark arts of cheating from his time at Atletico Madrid.
He got Taylor booked and was out of order with Ramsay.

But guess if he as still playing for us then many fans would be cheering this kind of behaviour if it gets you the upper hand in games.

He’s had a brilliant career for sure but don’t think he’s the best right back in the league. He’s consistently been one of them though.

Met a Newcastle fan on holiday earlier this year who had supported them all of his life. He was saying how much of a leader Trippier was and how much the fans love him. He also loved Nick Pope and said what a massive difference it had made to the defence having a proper keeper. Both very shrewd signings from Howe and looking at the likes of United they have gone through many more millions on keepers and full backs and Pope and Tripps would walk into their team for a fraction of the cost.

There’s no doubting he’s a great player. When I read he’d taken his game to another level I thought it was going to be a joke about him spending his time laying on the pitch.

Totally agree - and as a team we are really naive. I watched the game on my laptop and Beter got booked for shirt pulling but in the same incident his shirt was also being pulled. Countless times the Newcastle players were shoving ours in the back but nothing gets given. Anthony Gordon continues to improve his theatricals too.

Didn’t mean to like your post - once or twice even !!

Don’t think people are necessarily saying Tripps was a better player than these guys at the their peak. From my point of view at least it was how they played for Burnley rather than before or after with other teams.

I found that quite strange it being allowed in that same phase on 1 incident in a second (timewise) happening & the other bookable offence being repeated on 3 or 4 incidents over a longer time period, I can't remember the exact number before the yellow card was brandished, obviously like for like incidents should be treated the same fairly & evenly.

That I suppose depends when you started watching Burnley. I started I think in 1959 and have seen and agree with all those mentioned and would possibly add Leighten James. Of course you can only consider them in the era that they played and not in current times with all the benefits of better physical state due to diet and exercise/training etc.

Brilliant player for us, came in a bit raw, good going forward but didn't have enough discipline defensively. Dyche turned him into a brilliant player, from the sounds of it he got him to be more professional and not go out drinking as much.
I remember one game he was tormenting a team and I said to the chap next to me, "he'll play for England."
One of my all time favourite players and it was a privilege to watch him at times. Wish him nothing but good luck

At least 4 of the above 5 not world class while at Burnley. Three of them anything but.

Ratty little knob. Went down like he was shot when barely touched. Great going forward but a poor defender always. His 'I'll only go back to England to play for Burnley' or words to that effect sums him up for me. Took the blood money no prob.
