AFCON

Post by Yorkshirelad » Wed Oct 04, 2023 9:05 am

For the first time this is going to impact on us I believe with Lyle Foster being there. Have I missed something is there any reason why we can't have our winter break to coincide with the AFCON.
Also why can’t they organise one of the European international breaks around it as well. I understand they can’t do it for say a world cup international break.

The winter break does coincide with the AFCON.

The 34th edition of Afcon takes place from 13 January until 11 February 2024. According to the BBC.
Games in that period

13th January we play Luton
31st January we play Man City
3rd February we play Fulham
10th February we play Liverpool

Hopefully in there could be a FA cup fixture weekend of the 20th January

A real shame. Wanting Foster to play well but not too well, get him back early :D

I'm also worried about losing Zaroury to AFCON. Not sure we'll have enough with only 8 wingers during that period :)

The FA Cup 4th round is weekend of 27th January. Weekend of 20th is part of the ‘winter break’.

If South Africa get knocked out in the group stages then (in theory) Foster will only miss the Luton match, although I can’t imagine him being back and ready for City away potentially just a few days after SA’s last group game. Could easily be ready for Fulham though.

I'm not sure him being back for City will make a huge difference.
