Central Heating

Post by ClaretsPadiham » Fri Oct 13, 2023 7:15 pm

On tonight for the first time in months. Literally can’t remember last time it was on.

Good job prices aren’t that bad anymore.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

Gas prices seems to have some kind of psychic ability as they had pre-emptively gone through the roof before the Putin's invasion.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-58626018

It's a strange world, isn't it.

I wonder what gas prices might know about quantitative easing, furlough schemes and the effect of lockdown on economies?

Maybe gas prices can tell us what the winning lottery tickets numbers will be?

There must be gas wells in Palestine and Israel because apparently, that's going to increase gas prices as well.

It’s been some time since mine was on but I’m not going to allow myself to get cold nor am I going to allow the house to get damp no matter what the cost is.

Got up this morning and it was 8.9 degrees in the house. When I get up tomorrow the heating will have been on.

Wow 8.9 degrees that’s dangerously low ! Mines set at 18 degrees never lower. Comes on if it goes lower.

Coming on and off constantly is much cheaper than on all the time.

No idea what type of house you live in Tony, but sounds like there's not much Insulation in there, just like our 150 year old terrace. Ours said 17° today but felt like your 8.9.....Woodburner & heating will soon be on.

Heating has crept on a few times for an hour over the last week but tonight was the first time the log burner has been on since April- just wish I could find a source of free wood for it.

It’s only going to reach 25c tomorrow, and if, god forbid, I’m up at 4am it’ll be 11c outside.

Not sure how I’ll cope!!

Mine won't be going on. I have air source and it is horrendous. It costs an arm and a leg to run, especially when it is freezing outside, as it has to heat the air, and the radiators go cold pretty much immediately. I can't even set it as there is no timer so the house is freezing when I get home. There is on/off and temperature on the thermostat and that is it. I have bought a wifi electric radiator so I can use the app before I leave work to heat the lounge and it is a lot cheaper than the heating and toasty when I get in :) . I never use the heating in the bedrooms anyway so I can manage with what I have. I wouldn't have one of these systems thrown at me if it was my choice. The water only gets to 48 degrees which, believe it or not, is under the safe temperature for legionnaires disease, so every Friday night it blasts it up to 65 degrees to kill the germs, which again costs a fortune, and it has gone cold by Sunday.

It was a chilly 18 degrees in the house last night. I say chilly because on Friday it was over 21. 😲

There's been a massive temperature difference between north and south recently, I've even been sat outside in my t shirt this last week.

Feels like it's turning now though

Exactly our experience of Air Source. Managed to find someone who’d replace it for a gas boiler a year ago. A backward step but now we can afford to heat the house and more importantly, we’re actually warm in winter.

Every time I hear of someone getting it installed, i fear for them unless they live in a perfectly insulated modern home. The noise it made was a right pain in the ass too.

Current temperature outside at NG16 sits at 1°.
I'm going to have ours set at 18° 24/7 from now on and see how I get on with the bills.

Thermostats on the radiators turned lower in the bedrooms.

I have the hallway thermostat set to 19.5 during the day, rising to 22 around the kids bedtimes.

Never been sure what the best approach is with radiator thermostats.. put them all high to heat the house quicker and stop the boiler running for as long? Or have them on 3-4? I've got the well used rooms on 3 with the kids bedrooms on 5 currently.

UK Gas prices jumped 13.5% last week following damage to a gas connector pipeline just offshore from Finland following suspected sabotage. Should the conflict in the Middle East escalate further prices will soar again.

Has anyone fitted ‘smart TRV’s’?

I’m considering them but I’ve struggled to find info on how they work with ‘smart thermostats’, and if they really do.

I have a Google Nest thermostat, which itself is great, but I can only see the smart TRV’s working if the temperature where the thermostat is located is low enough for it to fire up the boiler.

For smart TRV’s to be truly ‘smart’ surely they need to talk to the thermostat and then only send heat to rooms under the required temperature.

If they can’t do that, they’re really only smart when the heating is on.

I ssume that, say you have the TRV in your living room, and that room drops below your chosen temperature, it tells the Nest to fire up, regardless if the hallway (or wherever you have the Nest) is warm or not.

Yes, it will work in the room that the thermostat is located. But if the room with the thermostat is at the required temperature, I don’t think it would send a message to the boiler to turn on if a different room was below the temperature required temperature.

Darthmum has the Honeywell smart TRV system at her gaff.

In effect your heating is set to ‘on’ all the time but manually adjusting a TRV temperature then fires up the boiler and sends flow to that room.

In effect you have all the trv’s automated to 11 degrees during the day, then the most popular rooms set to something higher when folk are home. This basically allows your living room to be heated say 6-9pm but your bedrooms don’t begin warming till say 8pm-10pm, rather than the whole house being warmed.

I looked into it and didn’t see the saving justifying the expenditure for my gaff but maybe for some with a big enough house / enough radiators.

If I lived on my tod, the heating would very rarely go on. As I’ve 3 kids and a missus who feels the cold, it went on for an hour on Friday night.

We live in a 1970s purpose built flat, and it was 4 degrees outside last night but the temperature hasn't gone below 21 inside. The walls are ridiculously thick though and have insulation on, and we have excellent double glazing. It also helps we've got windows running the full front aspect of the building which gives us sunshine from sunrise until sunset at this time of year, so we benefit from solar gain.

I fitted the Tado system last year and it's working really well. You would need to get rid of your existing thermostat and replace it with the Tado one that comes as part of the kit

Once installed, the main thermostat, usually in the hallway, can just be considered as another independent room rather than being the overall master. You CAN set each individual room to be linked to the main thermostat but I found that when I did that other rooms were being turned on unnecessarily just because one room had got cold

In the screenshot you can see each room having its own temperature and the hallway just being considered as another sibling.

During the day I have it so that the "Man cave", which is where my partner works and also happens to usually be the coldest normal room in the house, is the main dictator re whether the heat should come on or not.

During the evening I have the living room set to be the main demand for heat and the "Man Cave" is turned off completely.

Pre Tado the thermostat in the hallway was constantly coming on due to the hallway being colder than anywhere else even though the living room was not so bad

No windows open, had it re insulated five years ago when I had a new central heating system installed. I was caught out yesterday so heating went on before I got up this morning and Hive was telling me a much better story.

It’s always been a cold house and it gets precious little sun. When I stuck the heating on yesterday it was the first time for months and months. I know it’s still expensive but I won’t be cold and won’t let the house get cold.

I don't think it's quite cold enough yet when the canal starts freezing over that's usually my starting point, It feels colder because we've had a sudden drop from it being abnormally warm for the time of year to what it should be like now instead of it gradually dropping.

Thanks Croydon.

I was looking at that and the Honeywell EvoSmart (smart TRV’s and Thermostat). Both look to do what Google Nest won’t - bit annoying really as I’d prefer to stay with Nest as I’ve got the cams, doorbells, home hub, thermostat and protects. Seems for a huge tech company, Google is a little way behind in respect of smart TRV’s.

I'm the same. Got pretty much every Google/Nest product they make.

I did a bit of research and found that the full Google smart TRV system has a "self learn" feature which is supposed to anticipate what temperature you will most likely need based on previous settings

Soinds good but saw many reviews that said this feature was actually an annoyance and they lost the ability to set it exactly as they wanted due to the self learn taking over.

We have a hive thermostat that we keep in my daughters room which is set at 18C. During the week when she's at school we don't have the heating on and then make sure it's warm for her when she gets home. Front room has a log burner for when we want to get toasty and also for drying clothes, saved a fortune not having a tumble dryer.
Heating came on past night for the first time in about 6 months. Our terrace is from the 1880's and apart from the kitchen, it stays pretty warm
