HDMI Wireless extender

Post by steve1264b » Tue Oct 17, 2023 3:29 pm

HI Clarets

I have a tv in the front room with sky q and a tv in the dining room sky q mini box.

Its a recent upgrade and the tv's are not in sync with each other which is fine 99% of the time because we have different things on, however its a problem when the sport is on.

There is a notable difference or lag between the two.

I cannot run a HDMI or cat6 line between them so looking for a wireless solution.

Has anyone got a HDMI wireless extender and could they give me an honest review.

There are a few on the market and the average price is £129.

What is the lag between them? If it's just tenths of a second (which is still quite annoying) - you could try turning off any sort of input processing in the settings/configuration menu of the one that is "behind". Some TV's also have an audio delay feature I think, which might be worth exploring on the one that is "ahead" of the other.

As an example, here is how to adjust the audio delay on a Samsung TV

No worries and good luck. If you can share your TV make/model I might be able to find something more specific for you.

The reason I suggest this is that most wireless extenders introduce some element of lag anyway - you have to spend quite a lot to find something with (almost) zero latency. You might just end up with the same problem after forking out.

By the vey nature of how the mini boxes work you will never get real time sport and it will always lag due to them being Wi-Fi based..

So would the same apply to a Sky Glass TV because it's wifi based. Not that I will ever get one, just curious.

Yes, I cured this exact fault using the built in lag adjustment. I think it actually adjusts it out to match your worst lagged item, and from what I remember, the adjustment was within my sky+ settings.

To try and explain that - it doesn't make your lagging device better, it increase the lag on your master device to match it.

Technically yes….as an ex Sky employee I wouldn’t touch Sky Glass unless you were desperate due Tia your living circumstances, same with Sky Stream

Even if you assume the main sky box and mini box are perfectly synchronised (which they're probably not, per ClaretDiver's post) - there is an input lag difference between different makes and models of TV. Some process and display incoming signal much faster than others, and even then that can vary depending on the image and audio settings you use.

I didn't realise there was a setting in the Sky box for it, that would make sense though. Good tip!

Thanks for the info. I have no intention of getting one as I love my Sky Q box and record everything and watch it when it suits us, plus you can forward past the adverts. I also have Sky in the conservatory and bedroom in 4K using fibre hdmi cables and infra red wireless pyramids to control it.

Doug you are nearly a genius!

I can altar the lag via the sky box but it goes up in increments of 20ms. I reckon i need an extra 10ms for it to be perfect!
