Few seasons under Stan where we was going nowhere and just surviving at the bottom of the Championship.

As a 16 year old got separated from my dad after a match at Ewood in the late 70’s…….punched in the face and scarf nicked outside the ground…….made it up past the old infirmary and to the bus station outside the train station…….stood in the queue (yeah, I know!)when a group of B’rd fans appeared and targeted the queue…….a couple of lads behind me “took a punch” shouting they’d been on the Easter fair……at which point I realised one of those charming B’rds had set fire to my coat and up it went………bus arrived as I threw burning coat off……..

If football was anything like that now I’d call it a day…………but back then, it was what it was………

21/22 relegation. Everything conspired against us.
So many might have beens:
Conceding two late goals to BHA in first home game after dominating first 65mins.
Conceding late equaliser(that relegated us) in next home game to DL
Ben Mee injuries.
Cornet missing a sitter to equalise at Norwich, when we had just taken over the game.
Cornet missing penalty at West Ham that would have put us two up.
Weghorst missing.

Dreadful times in the old fourth prior to Mullen bringing us back to life, worst was 86-87 season you really had to be there to realise just how dire and desperate times were then. I think our generation sometimes get ridiculed for a cautious approach but wreckless spending and a dire board of directors coupled with horrendous managers got us into that mess.

Watford away in the quarter final. Such high hopes and a horror performance with Blake and Little on the bench.

Any relegation was built up over the season, so sort of expected.

Not so sure about my lowest point but Burnley's lowest point is anytime they draw away at Grimsby. Blundell Park is the lowest ground in the UK.

Definitely the run up to the Orient game. We seemed doomed and had some atrocious results. I can remember trying to convince myself that football didn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things, that Burnley would bounce back etc. etc. It was a truly awful time for any Burnley fan and makes what has happened since so much sweeter.

As mentioned earlier that 4/5 day hiatus between losing away at Crewe and playing at home to Orient in 1987. The journey home from Crewe in the car was probably the lowest ebb I can ever recall.

Nope went to the game was very toxic, think it was half time not full time, here’s a snippet of a news article from the game…

Laws was taunted with cries of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” by his own fuming fans and stewards had to hold them back at half-time as they vented their fury.

There was also a huge LAWS OUT banner at the back of the stand.

At the time for me it was probably when Owen Coyle left the club. I was born in 1992 so luckily didn't see the dark days, Coyle leaving felt like a watershed moment for me and probably ended any naivity I had about loyalty in football. Almost felt like I grew up overnight after that. Think I was around 16/17.

The Cotterball run of games is notorious though.

It feels silly picking anything in the modern era, but the relegation against Newcastle felt terrible - far worse than the others because of all of the talk of financial disaster and such. It was one of those horrible days where you kept hearing of phantom goals going in at Brentford and due to my signal being horrendously poor at Turf Moor, I was relying on that word of mouth.

Other than that, the last game of the season against Sunderland in 2004, I think we lost 2–1. I was absolutely gutted as Stan and in particular Glen walked around the pitch both in tears with us all knowing they were both leaving. I idolised Glen and found it really upsetting having him leave. It was the end of an era with him and Stan going, and with no money you couldn’t help but think things were going to get even worse than the horrific 03/04 season.

Lol. We miraculously persuaded Bobby Gould to pay £40k for him when if we’d sent him on a free it would have been overcharging. Had a West Brom supporting mate at uni - he took pelters that night and has never been the same since.

The FA Cup Quarter Final no show at Watford and the subsequent mini bus home where we ended up fighting each other (including the driver) about a beer stop.

There are still rifts that have never healed to this day.

The defeat at Crewe in 1987 looked like we deserved to go out of the league.

The 1986/87 season as a whole…The “Orient game” was quite simply the salvation because up to then the football was as bad as anything you could imagine….a few have mentioned the Crewe away 1-0 defeat but for me, for pure desolation, it was the Hereford Utd 6-0 home defeat on a miserable wet night…I was in my usual spot on the Bee Hole just to the right of the goals as you looked at the pitch and there was just one other bloke stood on the terrace…everyone else was sheltering under the Longside roof….it was bleak, absolutely bleak, with no real hope going forward….thank God for Neil Grewcock and Ian Britton and Taffy, who really were the only shining lights that season….you simply had to be there

How we stayed up in that 03/04 season still baffles me, hard to believe there was 3 worse teams than us.

84-87 were dark times. We were on a downward spiral and there didn’t seem to be a way to reverse it. It took the stark possibility (in fact at the time it seemed very likely) of what faced us on the morning of the Orient match to shake us out of it.
