O/T - first novel by a claret

Post by Selby Claret » Sat Oct 28, 2023 10:35 am

Non-football shameless promo incoming….

I hope you’ll forgive me for posting on this forum but I’m just starting out and could do with as many leg-ups as possible!

For the last two years I’ve been writing my first novel - it’s a Young Adult adventure but very easily read by adults too…

It’s now finished and is available to read online (for free!)

First 9 chapters of THE WONDERGROUND now available to read at:

If it interests you then great - if not then if you could pass on to family and friends please?

Thanks
UTC

I’ll pass that onto my 14 year old nephew as he does enjoy reading.

Good luck with it!

Good stuff, Selby Claret. I'll have a read and pass it on. Recently finished production of an audio drama I've written for the BBC so I know that nice feeling you must have felt when it was all done and dusted after having months/years of voices in your head!

I've started reading it. I'm trying to write but you need real commitment and have to find the time instead of saying you don't have it (my usual excuse).

I respect you for going all the way.

Are you open to constructive criticism?

Sorry if I’m misunderstanding but is the rest of it available somewhere? I don’t want to read the first nine chapters and not be able to finish it!

So the way Wattpad works is that further chapters are drip fed - still for free - on a daily basis

Or I believe you can make a purchase of the remainder of the book - but I’m still feeling my way through the app / website myself to see how that works

Well done - while my book is not fiction, I'm finding it very slow progress although I do think I've now just about got the first chapter complete.

I think the subject matter might be obvious - whether it ever gets much further I don't know.

A behind the scenes book based on this website would be a bestseller :o

Good luck with the second chapter. It is time consuming.

Good lad, Selby. I wish you success. I'm not into kids' books or YA books. But books are books. Writing is writing.

It is hard work. I did three novels in the late '90s; didn't get anywhere with them. Nearly with the first. Then I took 11 years off and started again. Five novels finished, the sixth on the last leg. They are psychosexual noir crime novels, the first trilogy is set in early-'90s Tokyo, the second trilogy in London between 1996 and 2001. Hard-edged would be a good adjective. The first novel is published, but the publisher is useless. No idea how to market. A second publisher has expressed an interest in the Tokyo trilogy if the first publisher will give the rights back. That's the point we're at. No big deal really. If I can draw a football analogy, it will be tantamount to being transferred from Bradford [Park Avenue] to Bradford City if it comes off. And I hate Bradford City.

Regards, Nick

I forgot to ask earlier. Is this on Amazon, as well? I'd never heard of Wattpad.

Not on Amazon yet

Basically using Wattpad as a platform to gauge interest and get it out there. The intention is to self-publish on Amazon / Google / Apple next year hopefully.

Selby, I forgot to give you this link. Superb resource. Helped me no end back in 2013.

David Peace once said the only function the creative writing MA at Essex performs is to put the students in touch with literary agents who hover around the course at the end of it like flies round sh1t. No one can teach someone to be creative, he said. They can only teach you how to edit. This book does that.

Interesting, Selby Claret and very well done. I'll definetly give it a read. Been going to a creative writing class for about a year now and found it very therapeutic. I've tried writing my own life story on a number of occasions and never got beyond a few chapters. Perhaps this will inspire me to greater efforts.
