Aston Villa
Are just doing things right aren’t they.
They got an Experience DoF in, slowly built a team and now have a fantastic manager.
Have a system, play square pegs in square holes, have slightly variations to their tactics but nothing too much, two deep in every area of the pitch with a few that can play across multiple positions - sign players that are good not have some weird metric that shows they may have some massive upside.
Yes they’ve spent but it’s not like they’ve spent well beyond means or more than the sort of average of the Premier League.
Just to be properly commended.
Absolutely miles ahead of teams with bizarre recruitment like a Chelsea and Man United, for example.
(And no - im not suggesting that we should be anywhere near where Aston Villa are right now)

Re: Aston Villa
They certainly seem to have spent the Grealish money well. I'd love to have Matty Cash at our club.

Re: Aston Villa
I'm sure someone will be along shortly to rebuke you for not providing a detailed list of their spending and who they're in debt to, but yes Villa have had a remarkable 12 months since their appointment of Emery.
Whilst as a club they're on a different level to us, there are some key fundamental principles we can learn from the way they attempt to play. The most important being that they always have two defensive midfielders goal side of the ball.

- yes hundreds of millions has been poured into the club - as equity not loans
- they bought their ground/training ground for a huge sum to avoid FFP issues
- survived in the Premier League by a convenient failure of goal line technology and a refusal of VAR to get involved
- have only really surged and developed following the appointment of an experienced European manager, who is on his second stint in the Premier League - he really struggled first time around, though that may have been in some part down to the mess that Arsenal were in at the time. This time though he was properly prepared and had a club structured to back him all the way

They are a good side to watch are Villa.
Who was it who on here who said Everton were going to turn them over at Villa Park a few weeks ago and they sent them on their way with a 4-0 hiding?

We wouldn't pay what Forest wanted for Matty Cash trying a far too low bid.A thing we were guilty of many times under Garlick

Emery is class, if it wasn't for Spurs winning the league under Ange he would be Manager of the season

I wonder how well Alan’s cringeworthy analogy is holding up when the girl that everyone else wants to date has spent all the housekeeping on cosmetics rather than groceries?

Re: Aston Villa
They're doing things right now, but it's taken them a heck of a long time to get to some level of quality in the premier league. A club Villa's size should be miles ahead of Burnley, but it's often not been the case over the past decade.

Re: Aston Villa
I seem to remember when Smith was in charge they had about 3 players for every position. He couldn't get a tune out of them but Emery is definitely a good Manager with a really well balanced squad.
Re: Aston Villa
More reactionary nonsense, Tresor had the most assists in Europe last season. Ramsey was the best player on the pitch against United. Odobert scored against Chelsea and was lively.
They’ve all started 2 games each but that’s enough to call them average laughable really

He even looked poor against Salford. Not saying he won't come good in time but right now we've paid over the top.
Ramsey doesn't even get in our strongest 11, Odabert lively? He scored a goal which takes a split second he did nothing else when he was on the pitch and Brentford was like we had 10 men first half.
This isn't about what you think they'll become, it's about the prices we've paid and we've paid over the top. Right now they aren't worth the money we've paid.
What about Trafford, O'Shea and Berge?

Re: Aston Villa
You can’t just automatically make allowances that all the signings will come good defending the questionable recruitment that’s not to say or labour the point that a odd 1 or 2 might do given the age. Even allowing for gradual incremental improvements approaching peak the evidence thus far doesn’t look good & you could easily argue with more conviction that we’ve been mugged than the idea of a fair price.
Re: Aston Villa
If two years down the line Ramsey is worth £30m, how is the £9m we probably paid today paying over the odds?bumba wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 11:23 amMost assists in Europe, look at the league he was in!

What about Trafford, O'Shea and Berge?
O’Shea was what? Reported at £6m so probably £4.5m? I don’t think that’s over the odds, he’s clearly being asked to immediately adapt and play a bigger part than anticipated due to injuries.
Trafford I’m not convinced yet, nor do I believe we paid anywhere near the reported potential £19m fee.
Berge I think is very talented we’re just yet to get the balance right in midfield. Thought he’s shown bags of ability so far though, the only one at the weekend who could put two passes together 2nd half and was amazing for the offside goal. Forest away (both league and cup) made a huge impact off the bench.
Re: Aston Villa
I’m not sure how you can really judge a player after 2 starts in a new league though, just knee jerk fickle stuff.

Re: Aston Villa
So two years down the line Ramsey goes for £30 million, that means Berge and Amdouni have been wasted deals because all there best positions are the same role so we've wasted money elsewhere. I don't see how Ramsey gets game time to generate £30 million.KRBFC wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 11:52 amIf two years down the line Ramsey is worth £30m, how is the £9m we probably paid today paying over the odds?

Unless O'Shea came out of contract he's a waste of money because he isn't a good defender and we'll never make any money on him.
Berge has probably shown the most promise but he's also shown so far to me that everything Sheffield Utd fans said about him seems to be true but he does look the most promising, is he worth what we paid though? I don't think he is.
We've spent a lot of money and not improved at all we've gone backwards
Re: Aston Villa
You wouldn’t believe this is real - 70 million that lot?? And as it stands none of them look good enough.
Emery is class, very much runs the club from top to bottom which is why he doesn’t always land at an elite club.

That's not fair on O'Shea. Even Kompany himself would struggle in our current team. Our defenders deserve more credit given the terrible off-the-ball play by everyone else in the team.
