Absolutely. We looked much, much better than at any point this season so far. Koleosho was really positive and direct. Berge looked more settled as the DM. Amdouni was a creative threat. Our passing was crisper and our midfield started to win second balls. 65% possession 15+ chances.

I still think we'll likely get relegated but today was much more positive.

Depends how positive a person you are.

On one hand we had a lot more of the ball than usual, forced lots of corners and we didn't look like like conceding every time the opposition went forward.

On the other, we created very little from open play and Roy Hodgson's instructions were probably along the lines of "just turn up, they'll make defensive mistakes and we'll win"

None.

We had loads of the ball against a Palace team that didn’t press us at all, barely threatened and were frankly there for the taking. We played around with it endlessly before inevitably giving it away and had what felt like 50 corners all bar one of which were useless.

If you lose against a team that (today, anyway) was that lacking in urgency or desire you’re really in trouble. You can overlook it with the big teams to an extent, but they were there to be beaten and we farted about with no end product and then threw even a point away with a ludicrous error.

We found a centre midfield partnership that actually looks like they can operate together in the PL.

O’Shea looked a lot better without having Ameen next to him.

We didn’t fall apart in a second half.

Not many positives when you play well and get beat, especially when we get walloped when we don’t play well.

Plenty of positives today. Berge and Browny worked well. Koleosho, if he had th final product, would be lethal. Trafford hardly had a thing to do. We forced their keeper into a couple of very good saves. Effort was definitely there. Beyer did well apart from his mistake and we looked more assured with him back. Vitinho worked hard to get us forward. Sore there is more, but it's been probably our best performance this season.

Strange isn't it.
Until recently I'd have said Ameen would have looked better with anyone but O'Shea.

Overall we looked a lot more better and competitive than in the last few games. However, how many PL teams would be pleased with sitting back for 60 minutes and not even trying to attack us? We defended a lot under Dyche but at least we'd have a few set pieces and maybe some counter attacks. Palace did almost nothing after they scored. And we still didn't create a single good chance to score.

Agreed. Just as with Dyche a few nights ago, Hodgson won't have an easier game. Training ground stuff. Another team who didn't have to graft to beat us. I can take a difference in quality and budgets. But it's more difficult to accept what seems to be a total lack of game plan, tactics, or plain and simple energy. Do we even scout the opposition?!

Palace were there for the taking and our lack of end product means we could be playing till Christmas and wouldn’t have scored. It was much better play than Bournemouth/Everton because we dominated the ball, in that regard yes, better - but we did nothing with it and had so many set pieces that came to nothing. We were endlessly wasteful, it was so frustrating.

The fact that they somehow won from a ludicrous error compounded it.

Better on the ball and with our shape. Obviously didn't lead to us to creating anywhere near enough chances not helped by defensive slip-ups.

Not sure we "farted about" - there was some decent effort

But, quite correctly observed, we have absolutely no end product

We played around with it because there was little or nobody with finishing skills through the middle

But we did create opportunities to test the keeper.

Best we've played all season though admittedly against a bang average Palace team. Koleosho, Brownhill & J Rod all had very good games, but of course a combination of no cutting edge & defensive howlers leads only to one outcome.

Only positive I take from today's game is it's one less game to attend this season on the PL with this team. Thankfully 2.5 hours in the pub with my mates pre game keeps me motivated on match day

No, I wasn't on the game. But the stats say we had 17 shots which is a lot for any team.
How many chances do we need?
Not arguing, merely looking at a stat which strongly suggests that our chance creation wasn't bad but our finishing was.

Difficult to find positives when you are beaten 2-0 by a side that offered absolutely nothing

We just can’t help hitting that self destruct button

So you didn't even watch it. The point is we might had 17 shots but we didn't test the keeper anywhere near enough. I can guarantee you that there will a theme on here from those who went on the game ie that we didn't have an end product. If you want to dismiss that view based purely on the shots off target I'll leave you to it.

Much better today, though that’s also illustrative of how bad we’ve been. Confidence looks rock bottom but they stuck at it. Deficiencies in the squad have been done to death but there was much more urgency than before.

Still miles to go before we’re good enough, but compare that to some of the performances recently that was an improvement.

Zero positives.
We need points on the board, nothing else matters now and we have let another winnable fixture slip. Could have played till midnight and still not scored.

Palace weren’t crap. We played right into their hands. Got 1-0 up early from another calamity and they could just sit back and soak up as much pressure as they liked because we were never going to score. They were defensively sound and we never threatened them. As easy of a 2-0 away performance as you’ll see.

I like Berge. He’s great in possession so you see a lot of his qualities in games like today where the opposition allows you to have the ball. He’s not so good out of possession, though, which is a quality I think only Cork has in this squad. That fact, I think, really underscores the disappointment of our summer investment.
