January transfer window rumours.

Post by TopCat » Mon Nov 06, 2023 9:42 am

Hopefully we have identified a left back aside from Maatsen.
What else can we expect?
Loans more likely?

I would expect only loans looking at our position at the moment .

I suspect at least a couple of CMs, a couple of full backs and probably a stiker

I would imagine plenty of work is going on behind the scenes to fill the gaps...

A striker needed for when Foster is 'ill'.
A DM.
Full Backs x2.

We will struggle to sign top players in Jan if we are still bottom of the league.

We have Obafemi to come back so that’s a striker. Shame the lads hardly played for us. Think his pace would be a problem in the PL.

We need a good solid destroyer in the centre of midfield and 2 full backs. I’d even say a goalkeeper if Muric is getting sold.

This.

Unless we get loans in, any permanent signings would know there was a fair chance of being in the Championship next season and possibly looking at a wage cut within 5 months of their contract starting. Depending how dire things are looking in January, we may even have difficulty persuading clubs we’re a good place to send loanees.

I’m sure we’ll try and address some of our problems, but it would be naive to think it’ll be easy given the start we’ve made.

We were linked with Quillindschy Hartmann in the summer, and I was very excited about that one he's essentially a better-defending Maatsen, young Dutch LB with heaps of potential but he's become Feyenoord's first choice, and has broken into (and scored for) the Dutch team so I think that's beyond our reach now.

There's no world in which we get rid of Jay this window. Foster will be off to AFCON and leaves us absolutely no backup.

I do think Jay will be off in the summer though. Similarly, Redmond won't be off having only just signed.

Fully expect Churlinov to be off now he's starting to get back to fitness. Until he's sorted the midfield issues he'd be a fool to let Massengo go having never given him a chance so far. Obafemi is an interesting one. I just don't see where he fits. He wasn't starting in the Championship so there's a chance he gets loaned out but the longer we're not scoring it seems silly to let attacking options walk out the door.

Will certainly be interesting to see what, if anything, we can do in Jan.

Churlinov will go, pity for me as he came on a bigger fee than Benson/Zaroury yet has hardly got a sniff. Would rather have tried him than a couple of the new players to be honest Tresor looks miles short.
Cork might get a loan.
Obafemi or Jay will go, depends how fit Obafemi is and if we can find a taker for Jay but I see one going.
Probably another winger, Zaroury might be sold (we'd still turn a profit on his original fee even if hes not played much this year) or loaned back to the Championship.
Muric, unfortunately, I think will be sold, big big mistake IMO.
Can see a suprise departure from the backline, Roberts or Ekdal.
Fancy Massengo to get loaned to the Championship.

That's 4-7 departures.

I would hope the pursuit of 'young talented Belgians' is suspended and we bring in experienced defenders, midfielders and a striker. Probably loans and probably too late, but you have to live in hope.

How do you come to that conclusion re massengo, he hasn't been selected yet, apart from at Salford, at which he looked very tenacious albeit he wasn't on the pitch very long.

Why get rid of Darko he scores goals?
Get him in the team
Charlie has been excellent at left back yet still he gets criticism
We need a young Bashley .a big striker with an eye for goal and a tough tackling cm

How many goals did he score for Burnley last season ? (In a season when we scored a lot of goals and made a bagful of chances every game)
Why do you think that a player who many times could not even make our bench last season would all of a sudden start to score goals in the hardest league in the world ?

I’d love nothing more for this to happen but feels like you are just saying this out of desperation.

Our transfer strategy should depend on where we are in the table in January…

In touching difference: go for a few experienced loans to help see if we can catch up.

Out of sight: double down on signing the best young talent possible. Give them half a season of PL money/experience/time in training ready for a good go at the Championship next season.

I think it's pretty obvious to everyone that we need a striker, midfielder and two new full backs - a right sided one and a left sided one.

As Stan would say, "A blind man on a galloping horse could see that"!

Whether they are permanent or loans is up for debate - I don't actually care as long as they come in and make us more competitive! And as early as possible in January too!

I think Darko would perform better than some have right now.

Looks a player that could be suited to the Prem, quite direct and physical for a winger. Hardly like our lot have been ripping it up.

I’ve seen the Summerville links (Leeds winger) - think if we sign another wide player my head will roll off

I joked a few games ago that we were going to trial out a full team of wingers, maybe this is the reality 🙈

Churlinov was way off it whenever the got the chance in the Championship. I can't think why he would be "suited to the Prem". He struggled with basic control at times when I saw him last season. Was awful at Reading away and I don't think VK brought him in again after that game.

It's amazing how quite a lot of players are getting so much better in their absence as the team struggles this season.

I think that’s harsh in all honesty.

He didn’t play much then when he started growing into it (like a lot of our team did) he got injured.

Yeah he had a bad game at reading away but I believe it was the first one back after a significant period out of the side.

Was causing problems at Baggies away.

Having watched a half or so of Sacha Boey vs Man United, he’s have been my absolute top pick for Jan. Alongside a powerful CDM and CH.

Sadly our league position and interest from bigger club makes that one unobtainable now :(

Remember us posting something similar a few weeks back about Sacha Boey. You'd think we'd have to pick up a fair few points between now and January for a player like him to consider us. But we can hope!

Striker (perhaps two)
Centre mid (perhaps two)
Right back
Left back

And if there's any budget/space in the squad left -
Centre back

Of course, some will need to leave as the squad's full as it is.

There's a bunch who I wouldn't be surprised if they left in one way or another. Rodriguez, Churlinov, Massengo, Muric, Zaroury, Benson, Cork, Obafemi, Taylor.

He was poor in virtually every game he payed last season. Ipswich away in the cup another notable one.

Not about building up some momentum with a run in the team but more that he was nowhere near having basic skills, i.e. touch/control, like Zaroury.

It’s all about opinions but mine is that the PL is much quicker with less space so I can’t see how he would be better suited when he didn’t have the tools to be effective at a far lower level.

That’s just not true though is it? Yeah lacked some end product but he barely had a kick. Had something different than our wingers.

Think there were some signs of being a player in there - United in the cup showed a bit for me.

I’m not suggesting that he’d have a huge impact in the PL - I’m saying that he could potentially be suited to it with his style of play.

Be interesting to see how his career pans out.

With so few points on the board I dont see Pace agreeing to more purchases unless we can sell anyone first or reduce wage bill by getting some of old guard, or youngsters unlikely to play much, to go on loan. Also cant see an established player joining us to get relegated

That puts a lot of pressure on us to go max loan route

Been thinking about loans. Tilemans is not happy at Villa and not likely to feature. He is a technically good midfielder who can take the ball of the back four and keeper, with good passing vision and a great shot. VK will know him. Worth a shout for loan

You can add Stoke away to the list too.I can’t think of many players that have struggled at Championship level but flourished in the PL.

The answers to our problems aren’t currently in our ranks unfortunately. Cork and Ekdal also been hailed as potential saviours. Can’t see either having the legs to cope with this level. Especially in our current style of play.

Suspect we’re looking at loans and personally hope we don’t throw any substantial money at it in January. Not the time to gamble.

In priority order

- A sharp athletic ball winning midfielder
- A physically dominant centre half
- Left Back
- Right Back

To move on

Vitinho
Rodriguez
2 or 3 wingers

Been thinking about loans. Tilemans is not happy at Villa and not likely to feature. He is a technically good midfielder who can take the ball of the back four and keeper, with good passing vision and a great shot. VK will know him. Worth a shout for loan
I would love Tielemens but I think he would be an incredibly expensive loan signing.

Isn’t he on something daft like 200k a week?

Unless we pick up some points over the next few weeks I think it will be difficult to attract any top targets..

In priority order

- A sharp athletic ball winning midfielder
- A physically dominant centre half
- Left Back
- Right Back

To move on

Vitinho
Rodriguez
2 or 3 wingers
Wouldn't move on Vitinho, think far too much is made of his shortcomings and people forget how young he is because our whole team are kids. Defenders tend to peak later.

The problem with moving on wingers is the one I'd prioritize moving is the one we've just paid 18m for.

‘Could be more suited’ doesn’t equal ‘flourished’

Had 4 less apps than Foster in the Champ - Foster showed signs he could have something and has managed to step up (when he has featured)

Not suggesting Darko would flourish, not suggesting he’d be a world beater, just saying I think he had a bit more to show and offered something different

Ultimately it all depends wether we are still in the fight or not .

If we are cut adrift completely then I doubt we will see much at all apart from some loans outgoing .

If we are still in with a chance then I think two prem loans will be the order of the day and possibly one from abroad

Vitinho has certainly offered more than Roberts has shown at this level in his Burnley career so far.

He’s also hardly had a run in the side at his favoured position. I’m cool with Vitinho as well 👍

Oof wouldn't go that far. I just think that while he does have a mistake in him and can get dispossessed, it's not as drastic as people make out and for his age he's still got time to develop, plus just has that hard to quantify look of a player who's maybe not good enough now but not far off abruptly turning the corner to become very very good. Call it gut feeling or just being taken in by his stepovers but while he'd be my 2nd choice I think he still has a lot of upwards potential.
