I spoke to someone in town yesterday who asked how on earth last season’s team is struggling so much. The simple fact is there is only Roberts, Beyer, Cullen & Brownhill really playing from that team.

Re: 7 Months ago today....
And that's the biggest problem. Last season the bond between players and fans grew which was massively helped along by the results. This season we don't have the results, don't have the players and they wonder why we don't have the atmosphere?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Nov 07, 2023 1:20 pmI spoke to someone in town yesterday who asked how on earth last season’s team is struggling so much. Re: 7 Months ago today....
That's not really the point though, individualy this squad of players are are without doubt the most technically gifted players I've ever seen play for Burnley but as a team they are miles off.AGENT_CLARET wrote: ↑Tue Nov 07, 2023 4:50 pmAnd possibly only Beyer is good enough for the Premier league out of those four

Perhaps if someone thinks we are still fielding last years team, then the question could quite easily and legitimately be dismissed….ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Nov 07, 2023 1:20 pmI spoke to someone in town yesterday who asked how on earth last season’s team is struggling so much. Re: 7 Months ago today....
We've spent unimaginable sums of money by our standards in the transfer window and ended up with a worse team. I didnt anticipate either when we were promoted.
Re: 7 Months ago today....
Hard to disagree, far better individuals in the door but not a better team. We’re also not even playing the same system/formation/style as last season which is even more baffling to me.randomclaret2 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 07, 2023 5:46 pmWe've spent unimaginable sums of money by our standards in the transfer window and ended up with a worse team. It’s like VK got promoted and read far too much into those saying “well he will have to change his style to stay up” before a ball was kicked so changed it into god knows whatever we are watching. It’s no longer the high pressing clever side forcing overloads with inverted fullbacks.
I firmly believe we’d have stayed in this league comfortably if VK employed the exact same tactics and style as last season. The biggest football myth ever is that you need to be pragmatic to survive, you can’t out football 5 or 6 sides in this division (if that) the rest are there to be got at, even Man United were out footballed.
Call me delusional but last seasons side would’ve ran over that same United side at home and Palace too. A combination of VK ditching players from last season, injuries to key areas and Pace not signing Tella and Maatsen (who VK wanted back) has killed last seasons side, it’s gone completely and quite sad to watch honestly because I loved that team and some of the players in it.

We're not in 'such a mess'. We're in a poor run of form against superior opposition. Eye-opening to see how many have white flagged it in such a short space of time on here.

Re: 7 Months ago today....
Another thread based on despondency but this season Foster and Beyer have played about 600 minutes each out of 990 available in the league. This season has shown us they are two definite starters so that weakens us hugely. I’m inclined to see what happens to us when those two get a run of games, as well as Berge and Amdouni who I see as ready (others like Tresor I think will be at that level in a few months().
My only concern is that those two Foster and Berge have a history of missing quite a lot of games so that implies it will continue, and we don’t have much cover for them. That may need addressing in January.

More to team building than plucking 11 players together and thinking it’d work.
Last season everything just clicked. Can’t be repeated or emphasised enough how rare that is.

This is what some people are failing to get their heads around. We're playing international supergiants. We've failed to adapt so far and we look awful.
Completely different scenarios now because of the nature of the opposition. But then again, Crystal Palace were garbage and we still couldn't win.

The saddest thing is seeing how some of our fans have been quick to turn on VK, especially on here. Some were calling for him to go before we were in the 3rd week of October. Don't ever call fans of other clubs 'plastic' again, because we now have more plastic than a municipal recycling plant.

Re: 7 Months ago today....
It’s ridiculous how quickly people turn on managers. We’ve seen it before with Sean Dyche every time we went into a difficult run. Even happened during the 2017/18 and 2019/2020 seasons when we won 54 points.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Wed Nov 08, 2023 9:14 amThe saddest thing is seeing how some of our fans have been quick to turn on VK, especially on here. I think we have made a lot of mistakes this season but the answer isn’t and shouldn’t be to change manager, that’s a ridiculous suggestion in my view.
The turning on him is definitely not especially on here either.

Pace did everything to get Maatsen, including offering a ridiculous £31 million.KRBFC wrote: ↑Tue Nov 07, 2023 5:59 pmA combination of VK ditching players from last season, injuries to key areas and Pace not signing Tella and Maatsen (who VK wanted back) has killed last seasons side, it’s gone completely and quite sad to watch honestly because I loved that team and some of the players in it.

I'm not sure you're right on Tella and Maatsen.KRBFC wrote: ↑Tue Nov 07, 2023 5:59 pmCall me delusional but last seasons side would’ve ran over that same United side at home and Palace too. Situation with Maatsen was complicated and somewhat ironic because at the start on the window I got the expression he was keen to return but Chelsea were not interested in letting him go. At the end it was the opposite; Chelsea accepted our bid (which is our transfer record x2 so not sure how you can blame that on Pace) but he wanted to stay because he featured a lot in pre-season and did well.
Tella on the other hand is a very, very strange situation because I was sure he would have been a priority for us. However, there were no indications that we tried hard to bring him back. We apparently didn't value him at 15 like Southampton did which is odd when you consider we paid similar fees for Amdouni, Ramsey and Tresor.

Re: 7 Months ago today....
Also, the fact Tella ended at Leverkusen, who are challenging for the Bundesliga title, might have meant they and some other pretty big hitters were sniffing around enough to give us cold feet - our strategy seemed to be to move on pretty quickly if bigger clubs made a move (notably Verbruggen). Appreciate he isn't getting many minutes at the moment, but it's a difficult move for the player to turn down.
Re: 7 Months ago today....
I didn’t blame it on Pace, I just meant it’s not VKs fault we didn’t bring back Tella and Maatsen because he clearly wanted them both back.ervi34 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 09, 2023 12:47 pmI'm not sure you're right on Tella and Maatsen.

Tella went to Germany for £25m, would he have picked us over them? Obviously we didn’t value him at £25m. Like you say in the end Maatsen didn’t want to return.

Re: 7 Months ago today....
I remember people calling for Dyche to be sacked after the Boxing Day defeat at Hull 2015/16 season. Yep, the same season we went up as champions. At least two of them still have the same usernames, and continued to call for his sacking on numerous occasions, and they are doing the same with VK. If they had their way, we'd probably have gone through 10 mangers since 2015, and be playing in L2.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Nov 09, 2023 12:04 pmIt’s ridiculous how quickly people turn on managers. Tella, we miss him badly, played with a smile on his face that no doubt rubbed off on others.
THB, mistake not getting him, way ahead Al Dakhil, missing his leadership
Re: 7 Months ago today....
Transfermarkt says he went for 23m euros which is roughly £20m and that's a similar fee to the one we paid for Tresor. I also think we would have gotten him for £15m if we offered that in early July.KRBFC wrote: ↑Thu Nov 09, 2023 1:25 pmI didn’t blame it on Pace, I just meant it’s not VKs fault we didn’t bring back Tella and Maatsen because he clearly wanted them both back.

The same website has us paying Genk €18m euros which is roughly £15.6m, so not that similar. And isn’t there some arrangement around that being a loan for this year which is presumably to delay the outlay?
