Re: Lyle Foster illness
Glad he’s getting the help he needs. Also a positive at how much easier it is for players to get help now. A few players have spoken in the past where if you break your leg it’s treated as an injury but depression had way more stigma around it.
Re: Lyle Foster illness
Poor lad must be awful. Playing in the best league in the world and playing well and he still gets ill.
Such a horrible disease and just goes to show success and money doesn’t equal cure.
I hope he gets himself the help he needs and I hope he gets better soon.

This is really bad news all round.
Get well soon, Lyle, and I hope we’re now looking at another centre forward in January.

Well said. Get well soon Lyle.gandhisflipflop wrote: ↑Thu Nov 09, 2023 3:43 pmJust to add, I hope that people might just lay off the rest of the team a little bit reading this. Our players are not robots.
As an aside maybe posters on here can take heed about the way they treat other posters. I have seen people ridiculed on a regular basis because they don't think how they think and their views don't tally with their own.
We are all here because of our love of BFC. Let's try to treat all our fans and all our players with the kindness and respect that we would hope to be treated with ourselves.
And one thing I heard many years ago is that we can disagree without being disagreeable.

Re: Lyle Foster illness
Huge shame when he was one of the few players looking far better than last season and like he could really cut it in the PL and make a difference. A big blow for us, but as others have said, his personal health has to come first.
Re: Lyle Foster illness
Best wishes Lyle.....Let's see that great smile back on Turf Moor.....when you're ready of course.
Re: Lyle Foster illness
Wishing him and his family the very best. Hopefully he can take as long as necessary to get whatever help and support he needs.
Re: Lyle Foster illness
Speaking from personal experience, mental health was/is the hardest thing to recover from. Can never put a finger on the triggers and from one week to the next can be in a whole new place mentally.
I got the help I needed a few years ago, and the coping mechanisms I learnt are still being practiced to this day.
I sympathise with Lyle and anyone else who suffers. Get well soon!
If there’s anyone reading this who is affected, please reach out, everyone cares. I’d much rather have one of my friends call me and be their shoulder when they need it, than it be a phone call to let me know of their funeral.

Get well soon Lyle. Was a huge player for us this season but there’s more important things in life than football. Heard a rumour on Saturday that it was a serious incident and this statement would actually back this notion up. Thoughts are with him! UTC

Re: Lyle Foster illness
Can only echo all the comments in support of Lyle and the related support groups.
The acceptance of mental health as a serious illness has come on leaps and bounds over the last 20 years.
When my sister took her life all those years ago and despite there being 300+ at her funeral she was treated atrociously by both the Burnley Express and LET.
If the care and treatment hasn't improved at least societies views have.

90 minutes of "Lyle Foster, he's from South Africa" on Saturday would be nice to hear
Wishing him all the best
He's a massive miss
But nothing in comparison to getting his health attended to

Is there something we can do as a group, to send him something via the club. Not sure what, just a token or gesture to show that we're all thinking of him?
I've been there with depression and it's a dark and cold and scary place - and very lonely, even if you're surrounded by people that love you.
Puts everything into perspective really. Sending love and happy positive vibes to big Lyle. x

Hope he gets well soon. It's also good of him to allow the club to put this out into the public domain. The more MH awareness, the better.

I am certainly not qualified to comment on any form of mental illness. But I am sure that our club will assist Lyle in any way possible. I don’t know if Lyle is in the UK or home in SA. Either way I hope he is with the people he loves and who love him. Together they can beat this horrible illness. All the best Lyle from Clarets everywhere

Re: Lyle Foster illness
Back in October 2009 a young poster from the old board took his own life at just 23. At the time there were some horrible posts, clearly from people who just had no understanding of this awful illness.
Thankfully I really do think there is far more understanding today which allows for people to accept what is happening to others and allows more people to speak out and seek help when they need it. It’s wonderful to see all the supportive comments on this thread.

Re: Lyle Foster illness
Vaguely remember that. Extremely sad. I also remember a poster called ratsalad at the time personally helping me by sending me an email with a document of coping mechanisms after we exchanged emails on claretsmad around that time. I don’t know if he or she posts on here or if they read this board but never got the chance to say thankyou so I hope you read this.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Nov 09, 2023 8:06 pmBack in October 2009 a young poster from the old board took his own life at just 23. Agree with the sentiments of other posters in that we need to be kind regardless of how bad the team is doing, they're only human.

Re: Lyle Foster illness
Interesting comment from Lyle in relation to his time in Belgium.
"I felt like I couldn't express myself with my teammates ...and do things footballers are supposed to do"
I can empathise with that ....being in an environment where you might really enjoy what you do....but cannot necessarily do all those things you're expected to do....especially if you're of an introvert nature performing on a stage for extroverts.
Here's hoping all the BFC support, both staff and fans, can get you back fully fit and raring to go soon.

Re: Lyle Foster illness
A few mouthy media types have recently belittled people, men in particular for saying they suffer with such problems. The inference being that they are somehow weak, and admitting to such problems is not something that should be socially acceptable. The majority of right thinking folk know what utter ***** that is.
Life can be very tough for many of us through a myriad of reasons. No one is immune if circumstances conspire against us. Its heartening to read so many supportive comments on this thread. There is help and assistance out there. No shame whatsoever in seeking that help out. Wishing you well Lyle, you will find the strength to overcome this hurdle .

Tonight I have seen remarks about Lyle all over Twitter X and also on here. I’ve seen comments from people all over the world who support all kinds of teams. For the first time I can remember about anyone it is 100% positive. Mental health awareness is so strong now.
Also lots of comments praising Burnley Football Club and saying he could not be working for a better place.
It’s very emotional seeing the good that people are capable of, and what our club is capable of. Credit to everyone, and especially to Lyle for showing such strength in coming forward. We stick together as one, as does the wider football community. Up the Clarets.

The club could sell South Africa flags in the club shop and we could show our support on the ground for Lyle Foster, all proceeds could go to one of the mental health charities like http://www.mind.org.uk/ and the media coverage would be a good way of getting this terrible lonely condition in the public eye more

Re: Lyle Foster illness
Thinking of you Lyle. Just when you think you have beaten it, it can sneak back into your life. Good that you are aware early. Sometimes you are completely unaware, thinking it can't touch you and then it surprises you. I found I had to deal with some difficult memories and feelings. It hit me in 2009 after years of denial, (unaware denial, which seems weird now) began with medication, lost my job two years later, medication required for 7 years, off medication now for 7 years and after working again the past 4 years have chosen to retire officially at the end of March next year, one month before my 72nd birthday. I still have the occasional 'dip' but I'm now able to accept it and handle it when it visits me again, just to say hi. Good luck Lyle and fellow sufferers.

Re: Lyle Foster illness
Good luck Lyle in your recovery. Mental illness is something that can make you the loneliest person in a crowded room and probably the best solution is to talk and often. There are innumerable reasons for it but whatever the reason, you need support and it’s as often from the people that you don’t know as much as the ones that you do.
