Post by ŽižkovClaret » Mon Nov 13, 2023 7:55 pm

As im away all but one weekend between now and mid Jan, i've relented and put my tree and a bit of tinsel up.

Balcony lights can wait a bit, mind

I put mine up on Christmas Day afternoon and take it down on the 28th December as tradition dictates.

I blame all these bloody Christmas Adverts for these darned early tree erections.

The Mrs has always put it up on her birthday (6th Dec) since she was a child and even at 35 she doesn't seem to want to grow out of the tradition, I don't get involved though in decorations other than outside lights and going up and down from the loft.

Tree usually comes down on the 28-29th because she starts getting fed up with the house being a mess with presents etc...

As you may be able to tell, I couldn't care less about Christmas but as the saying goes, Happy Wife, Happy life.
We have booked to go to see Home Alone at the cinema on Christmas Eve, I'll enjoy that with the kids and a few beers

I’ve had the same Xmas tree for 25 years … I’ve had to add some new tinsel and keep up with the times .. so Mary is now a transgender …

For me it can wait until Christmas Eve, my Mrs will probably do it when I am on the West Ham game though.

On a similar topic it was ridiculous that Christmas songs were on in the Park View before the Palace game.

It's still bonfire season in east sussex, last one being next weekend at Robertsbridge. Christmas doesn't really get going until after bonfire disruption.

Mine is already up as it is in a pot in the garden, although a bit bare at the minute. I won't be bringing it in this year as it is now getting too heavy, so I will have to buy outdoor decs for it.

If it was my choice it would go up 23rd December as it is it will be done 2nd December, hopefully I don't walk into it and knock it over on my return from 3 points against the blades.

It will come down either 1st or 2nd Jan

People who really love Christmas generally irritate me.

They seem to want to ‘start’ it earlier every year and expect reasonable folk like me - who thinks around December 10th is appropriate enough, to join in with them.

Then there's Love Actually. I can't describe how much I hate that film and anyone who likes it. There is an inner rage that rumbles from deep within, the same rage that Cliff Richard used to evoke 20 years ago. But since he's not really a thing anymore, that film has replaced him… it makes me accept the world deserves to be annihilated for its existence

Whenever friends, family or acquaintances remark ‘its not Christmas without it’ I have to leave the room and mentally plan a scenario explaining why mass murder is justified in an imaginary courtroom.

Week before Christmas Eve for me, so always around 17th and it comes down on 2 Jan.
I love everything about Christmas, but it does seem to start earlier and earlier every year….the week before is time enough for me. As with everything, each to their own….

What I hate about Christmas is the over-commercialisation. Shops full of Christmas tat on sale in October. Emails from supermarkets, and all the rest, flooding into your inbox when November has barely started. Shops playing those awful Christmas pop songs in November.

And don't get me on about those over-expensive Christmas markets that members of my family want to drag me along to every year. Why would I want to pay a tenner for a single frankfurter that's come all the way from a jar bought in the local Lidl, and another tenner for a pint, just so I can stand around in Manchester's St Ann's Square, amongst the stalls selling poundshop fudge and marshmallows at such inflated rates that they would make the Weimar Republic blush.

Natasha is already threatening.
I have one rule and that is nothing goes up and I don’t talk about Christmas, until after Remembrance Sunday…
So I’m preparing for the worst.

Down usually on 2nd, odd times I give her until the day before All Fools Day… when I insist it’s all over.

This thread reminds me of a classic Gary Delaney joke...

Me in B&Q " "I'd like a 7 foot Christmas tree please"

B&Q assistant: "Are you going to put it up yourself?"

Me: "No, I was thinking the living room actually "

Normally the last weekend in November/First in December.

But this year...its going up this weekend! Seeing as I've commitments the following 2 weekends which means the daughter is having sleepovers at the grandparents, she'd kill me if I didn't put it up with her helping

It does save a little time in that we don't dismantle our trees each year, we just move them down into the cellar fully decorated. The lights round the window are a bit of a beggar, though. I suggested leaving them up all year round, just don't switch them on, but no luck with that one.

That is exactly what we do. Broadly in line with Advent and the 12 days/Epiphany.

I get irritated by people who put them up in November then you hear them crowing that they've taken them down just after Boxing Day because they have got fed up of the mess. Usually the wifes friends. Philistines.

Ours will be going up 16-Nov, day after my birthday. The wife loves Christmas, so I've decided that if I can't beat them then I'll join them and get swept up in the Christmas spirit early.

Merry Christmas all!

Why bother?

Trees are meant to grow out of the ground.

They're not meant to be in your living room.

Too many people are like sheep.

I agree, but you are supposed to make some sort of an effort if you have children get into the spirit of things, Xmas is for kids in the main I think it's magical to them.
