Waddle talks Burnley
Waddle talks Burnley
I hope the attached is readable, I just screenshotted it from a digital version of FourFourTwo on my phone.
This is the most I've seen him say about his time with us. Odd that he says the board wanted to sell his best four players - who I'm guessing were Payton, Cooke, Little and Weller/Smith - yet none of them left.
Also, I can't see Clive Holt putting up with spending money on wine at meetings, but that would be a strange thing to make up, I suppose.

Re: Waddle talks Burnley
With first hand knowledge, the directors at the time were never shy of consuming booze. There was always a well stocked drinks cabinet in their room and plenty of wine served when they were eating. There have been plenty of comments about the boardroom being more akin to a gentlemen's club back then so Waddle's comment about wine is not out of place in context.
Re: Waddle talks Burnley
The truth is always in the middle somewhere. What is 100% fact was that he was dire, absolutely dire .

Re: Waddle talks Burnley
Waddle just wasn’t the right fit for Teasdale's Burnley and evidently the right fit for management in the end. For his sake though, I think he should’ve stayed on, like said we were in good form towards the end of the season.
As for selling players… that’s football.

You can tell everything wrong was the clubs fault with the success he has had everywhere else as a manager in the 25 years since

He says he was only interested in the football side, but from what I hear he was often pretty absent at training! Just completely the wrong type of character to be a manager. However, seeing Chris Waddle wear a burnley shirt for the first time was amazing, he was my favorite player as a kid.

I was introduced to Ian Helliwell a day or two after Waddle had left.I casually asked him what about our manager leaving? His answer was are you surprised and went on to totally slag him off saying he had no idea about managing
Re: Waddle talks Burnley
Waddle playing sweeper still makes me shudder and as for Roeder’s comment about Little not being fit to lace Waddle’s boots…
Re: Waddle talks Burnley
Although in fairness to Waddle he brought Payton to the club and once he finally started playing Glen we started to play some decent stuff.
Re: Waddle talks Burnley
In Stan's book he claimed it was him who told him to play Little.

I know we didn't have much of a pot to pee in at the time, but you've got to laugh if indeed it's true that a £10.30p breakfast was bought to his attention during a board meeting.

Waddle could have took the squad to a spoons and made them order a breakfast there was probably only about £3 back then, could have signed a player with the savings
Re: Waddle talks Burnley
I think it would’ve been very interesting to see what he would have done the following season, given our form from Easter onwards

Waddle was without doubt one of those great players that is destined to be a very poor manager. At least it only took him a season to realise it.
As for Ian Helliwell deriding anyone for anything to do with football is definitely throwing stones from a glass house.

I don't think Spoons was a thing back them, unless he had a time machine . He could have bought a breakfast from the El Greco and warmed it up in the hotel room.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 17, 2023 9:27 amWaddle could have took the squad to a spoons and made them order a breakfast there was probably only about £3 back then, could have signed a player with the savings

To be fair £10.30 for a brekky back then was extortionate.
Micromanagement by the board was a bit bonkers, neither party covering themselves in glory.

A tenner was the going rate back then for a hotel full English, but you are right, it wasn't classed as cheap. I always made sure we were on a B&B tariff.

Re: Waddle talks Burnley
Loved Waddle as a player and I think like a lot of fans I was excited when he got the job.
Cannot have been easy for a player as good as him when he rocks up at training and sees someone like Ian Helliwell with the dexterity of a disabled giraffe.
From what Glen Little has said it doesn’t sound like Glen Roeder helped the atmosphere between the players and Waddle.
I’m sure Waddle found managing players difficult and it sounds like he just wanted to focus on the football which unfortunately is very rarely going to be the case when you are managing players, directors, fans etc
He gave it a try and it didn’t work out. That atmosphere for the Plymouth game was brilliant though and the fact we saw a player as good as Waddle in a burnley shirt was great.
He seems like a really good bloke who just loves football. I bet he is still quality on the pitch. Wand of a left foot and would have a field day taking corners against us now !!

Re: Waddle talks Burnley
Shows how little understanding you have of the situation. Little was a young player who had started just five league games for us prior to Waddle coming in. This is the same Little who Stan used to leave out a lot because, in Stan's words, it's like playing with ten men at times when they have the ball.
I know for a fact that Waddle and his team worked with Little so hard to ensure he offered more as a team player and it seems to me that we benefited from that. So I don't think Waddle is an idiot at all. It didn't work for him at Burnley, that's obvious, but he's certainly no idiot. I just knew someone would come up with this.

This was my first full season going to the matches with my Granddad in the Bob Lord Stand.... I think we played Gillingham the first game of the season at home and I had the butterfly's cause my Granddad said it was gonna be 4-0 to us.... I think about 5 games later the best i'd seen was us hit the post ha !
I remember Waddle playing and thinking as a young lad 'this guys is an England player hes going to skin everyone in this league !' .... was NOT the case !
That season although very worrying was full of everything and I will never for get the away game at Oldham where I witnessed a load of Burnley fans having to cross the pitch because there were too many of us then a couple of Oldham and Burnley fans throwing punches at each other cause they didn't prepare for it at all !
Then they Plymouth game ! Couldn't sleep the night before !
I do feel it was a shame he never managed again but we got Ternent and the rest is history ..... but I never in my wildest dreams back then thought we would ever see the Premier League ... or the championship for that matter .... which is why I always try to remain humble when we are going through rough patches ...
West Ham at home next ....... don't think we will be beating them 7-2 like we did York City that season !!

The Roeder comment on Little quite rightly upset supporters.
Seem to remember Gerry Harrison being another one who struggled for games initially under Waddle.

For some reason I remember that post hit - Andy Kiwomya who was on loan to us, during a night game! He was a disaster as manager.
Thankfully a number of injuries forced him into playing Little which was a major factor in averting a trip back to the basement.

Re: Waddle talks Burnley
He seems a top guy, very popular in Sheffield and loves football at any level despite playing right at the top.
But even though he was poor as a manager for us, it could have been worse. Got really lucky with Andy Payton falling out with his Huddersfield manager mid-season. Without that, we'd have been back in the 4th division.

I don’t think I’ll ever forget the Plymouth game as we could have gone down but it was a cracking game where we played really well with,if I remember correctly,Little supplying Coke with two crosses & Cooke rewarding Little with two goals! Hope that’s right.
I thought that Waddle had come to grips with the managing bit & I was extremely disappointed when he resigned to take up commentating with the BBC in France at the World Cup.

That final match V Plymouth was the first time The Turf had been full since the building of the new stands about 3 years earlier. It was "winner takes all" with the loser going down and unfortunately the draw favouring Argyle, who I seem to remember missed a sitter right at the end. The atmosphere in town and in the ground was brilliant, especially after we'd won. An amazing and memorable day, but it really shouldn't have ever come to that.Madpete wrote: ↑Fri Nov 17, 2023 12:48 pmI don’t think I’ll ever forget the Plymouth game as we could have gone down but it was a cracking game where we played really well with,if I remember correctly,Little supplying Coke with two crosses & Cooke rewarding Little with two goals! I agree hilariously bad. He was good at spraying balls about though.
Did we play 3-5-2 in those early games?
I can still remember seeing Chris Woods and Glen Roeder practicing before the match. Don’t think Woods saved one shot in that particular pre game.
