Runcorn v Burnley FAC 1981

Post by NL Claret » Tue Nov 21, 2023 9:02 pm

Come across the results from the same day in 1981 and 1987 on social media.

Burnley drew 0-0 with Runcorn in the FAC, Burnley won the replay a few days later.

Was only 9 at the time so have vague memories of it, the crowd given was 5,500 which made me think was the replay at Turf Moor?

Might be getting confused with FAC games v Hyde United and Altrincham.

1987 we beat Bolton 2-1. Previous week Bolton had knocked us out of the FAC. 2 proper Lancashire hot pots were them 2 games.

Didn’t realise that was the same season we beat Altrincham, vague memories now of going to the replay against Bury but not the game at Gigg. Bury based Clarets, possibly didn’t go to that game after going to the FAC a season or 2 earlier.

Just over 6,100 at Burnley for the draw and then 5,500 at Runcorn for the replay.

Game at Bury was eventually on after some cold weather. Bury made it 1-1 in the last minute with a goal from Craig Madden. Always felt the result at Runcorn was a good sign that we were beginning to make progress after what had been a dreadful start to the season. Didn't expect what was in store for the next 5 or 6 months, though.

When we played Altrincham in the third round we were 18th in the Third Division. After the game the Alty manager said we were so good he thought we’d win promotion. And he was right.

I went to Runcorn, remember it well, it was a feisty affair with the crowd … I remember Burnley fans chanting :-

It’s time for you to Run-corn
It’s time for you to Run-corn
It’s time for you to Run-corn !

I remember the Hyde game. The tie was switched to the Turf. We wore our yellow away kit.

I can't remember too much about the replay at Runcorn's Canal Street ground other than us being by far the better side and Paul McGee scoring both our goals.

What I do remember is being stood on the side looking at a pitch with a hell of a slope on it. I also remember the directors having to come down the touchline from their room behind the goal to the directors box on the half way line. One lady in the Burnley party was greeted with chants of 'Get your tits out for the lads,". The lady was Marilyn Jackson, wife of then chairman John Jackson. John didn't look at all pleased with it but from what I could see Marilyn quite enjoyed the attention.

Prior to the Altrincham game their midfield player, John King( who years later became their manager), made some disparaging comments about our current situation in an attempt to wind us up. I think it worked.

I can remember not seeing much owing to a combination of a poor view from the side & it being quite a misty night. It was quite lively outside the ground at full time.

An unpleasant character was John King - no longer with us, passed away earlier this year.

He once played for Alty in the FA Cup against Scunthorpe and won them a penalty in the last minute. After goading Joe Neenan (who had the ball), Neenan kneed him in the bolls and Alty went through with the resulting penalty. I believe Neenan had further trouble that night, smacking a fan who was also goading him and ending up with a police record.

Its hard to believe that anyone could goad Joe Neenan about his ability as a goalkeeper isn't it?

The FA Cup game v Bolton was very lively after the game. I don't think I have ever seen police horses running through the concourse under the CF stand before now.

A friend of mine played for Altrincham in the 1970's. John Davison was his name, known by his nickname 'Bobsy'. He got some terrible crowd reaction against him at Everton in an FA Cup tie after he was involved in a collision with their winger John Connolly resulting in a broken leg for the Everton man.

Good find - and it cost Scunthorpe a lot of money missing out on Anfield in the next round

Went to school in Bury and the lads who supported Bolton said it was scary up near the fire station. Our Sainsbury’s delivery driver tells a story about his trip to Turf Moor in the 80s, to cut a long story short he could see a transit van getting put on its side in the distance whilst trying to stay safe, he got to his transport and it was that van! Must have been that game, the following week didn’t Nat Lofthouse and Stan Cummings lead the teams out and pleaded for calm between the two sets of fans?

I was at St Theodores at the same time as John Davison, he lived at Waterfoot.
I seem to recall that he played for England schoolboys.

I think he also played for Altrincham at White Hart Lane against Spurs in the FA Cup, although my memory isn't what it was!

There was a minibus turned over on Fulledge Rec after the FA cup game. As Tony rightly says, it was a bit more than lively after the game, both inside and outside the ground. It was Lofthouse and Tommy Cummings on the pitch the week following the cup game appealing for calm. The return fixture around Easter 1988 at Burnden was equally eventful, spent a large part of the game being pelted with coins and all manner of objects from the Bolton fans, I was even hit with a china tea cup at one point! Underneath the terracing there were a set of double doors that were smashed open by Bolton fans armed with scaffolding poles There was a pub full of Burnley fans attacked by Bolton fans before the game and cars were targeted after the game leaving the car park. It was a bit hairy getting to the car as i was on crutches at the time having broken my foot and toes playing 5 a side a couple of weeks before. I think this was also the game where a train was attacked between Bolton and Blackburn.

He did play for England Schoolboys. I'm guessing he did play at WHL v Spurs in the F A Cup where they( Altrincham) got a draw. I went to the replay at City's Maine Rd where Spurs ran out comfortable winners in front of a 40,000 + gate. I'm sure Bobsy played in that game, too. He didn't play against us in 1982.

Just a few yards along the road from you at St. Gabriel's. When I went for my interview back in 1973 I sat in the grammar school for a good 15 minutes until a cleaner came along and asked why I was there. I told her and she said I needed to walk further down Bridge Rd. 😒

I was at that Maine Road replay too. Spurs won 3-0 with a Colin Lee hat trick. They had Aleksic making his debut in goal - think the infamous Mark Kendall had played in the first game at WHL.

My first ever game at Turf Moor. Can still remember wiping tears out my eyes as they scored the penalty.

We went to the Bolton game in my mates brother’s Datsun! We moved out of the paddock onto the open terrace to avoid the missiles that were going back and forth over the segregation. There’s a you tube video with extended highlights and you can see both sets of fans serging when the missiles were been launched. I could see it kicking off in the distance on Manchester Road after the game.

Oh, that's interesting. Well short of my 40,000. Wondering how I arrived at.that figure. 🤔. One thing I do recall was that very few Spurs fans made the journey. Nowadays you would expect there to be a significant following, especially to a ground the size of Maine Rd. then.

I’m intrigued, there weren’t many fellow Clarets.

Were we in the same year? Did you live Greenmount/holcombe brook/ totty way?

Yes, it’s me Paul ( there weren’t many/any clarets at BGS) , have a different user name than Claretsmad. Rarely post on here or social media about the Clarets. We did some good away trips in the Mullen promotion season, was only talking to my dad last night about Barnet and Gillingham away midweek. That police horse at Barnet and that trip to Cardiff.

Mansfield was a bit a lively too!!

Is Shaun back in UK now? We haven’t been all season, lost a lot of interest in the lockdowns and haven’t been back much, think we are for the weekend of the Everton game,

I remember being at the Runcorn away, cash tills and as we got near the turnstile a little **** ran up and grabbed a load of cash, 50ps everywhere, let's just say a lot of lads pockets were jangling going in to the game.
