Ronnie O’Sullivan

Post by ClaretsPadiham » Sun Dec 03, 2023 9:43 pm

Just won the UK Championships for the 8th time, he’s now the youngest player to ever win it and the oldest.

The greatest ever there’s no debate, the most gifted sportsman this country has ever produced, just overlooked as Snooker isn’t as popular as some sports.

Nobody will ever be better than him.

Fantastic yeah. Great Player

Alex Higgins on his 'A' game is the best player to walk the planet though. From a fans point of view. In my humble opinion he beats Ronnie's 'A' game... at least for entertainment

Alex Higgins was a sensational player, but Ronnie O’Sullivan is a level above.

Joe Davis used to make maximum breaks with the old, heavy, ivory balls on much slower cloths, not the lightning quick tables that are the norm in todays game.

He is up there with Higgins, O'Sullivan, Hendry and Davis in snookers hall of fame.

It’s difficult to make comparisons with the old & new everything seems to be more advanced with the cues & tips & tables. It’s been an excellent championship throughout with a good standard of snooker.

I’d like to find the words for him, but I’ve run out of superlatives. What comes after a GOAT?

No debate? No point mentioning Daley Thomson, AP McCoy, Lester Piggott, Gordon Richards, Phil Taylor, Torville and Dean, WG Grace, Fred Perry, etc?

O'Sullivan may be the greatest sportsman who has played in the last 24 hours. I wouldn't go further than that. To say that he is clearly better than Stephen Hendry is a stretch.

clever at potting coloured balls by leaning on a table, but far removed from the term sport.

Same OP was saying we should be signing Ollie McBurnie earlier today, just in case you’re wondering whether to get into a debate about the greatest ever sportsman thing.

Certainly the greatest to ever play snooker, that’s unarguable now.

I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch. He’s won more major tournaments than him, level on World Championships, more maximums, more centuries, in pretty much every conceivable metric, he’s out done him. Hendry himself has even said the same.

Exactly!... It's a completely different game with the lighter balls.

Loved Higgins but it was very rare for him to be on his 'A' game, file under flawed genius.

Both were legends dominating the sport in their own eras but if you had to break it down & analyse all the respective achievements, Sullivan does come out on top a phenomenal player really & even from the age of 17 he'd completed a maximum 147 break.

I think he's easily on the top of the pile when it comes to Snooker. An absolute freak really, the way he uses both hands is phenomenal but to dominate a sport for so long is just ridiculous. Not only that but he holds and is setting new standards/records every time he plays.

The head2head of games between them is O’Sullivan 7 - Hendry 5...

That was at the tail end of Hendry's career when his form had dropped off a cliff... That tells me a lot...

If I had to put my life on either to win with both in their prime, it would be Hendry... That being said, O’Sullivan's longevity at such a high level is remarkable, and he is a genius.

I remember Alex Higgins once remarking how the re-modelled table and particularly the holes, made it too easy. He found it was more difficult to see off the lesser players. The old table found you out.

Iymt is always hard to separate the greats, owing to the different eras. However, for consistency from extreme youth to oldest winner and still number 1, Ronnie O''Sullivan has earned his place in the discussion. Both hands too. Exceptional talent.
